was thinking the same; used to play in a league saturday morning and then watch those guys in the afternoon.

I was hooked for years on that show (pun intended). My winter Saturday’s revolved around watching it. They kept you in suspense at the start of the show by showing the top guy last. Always loved it when that guy was Bo!

yep and best commentator along with Chris Schenkel. It carries thru to these instructional vids which he also did as a feature on the PBA telecasts.

That's school you go tot meet him. That's one reason I like his tips on the VHS and during the ABC broadcasts. He takes it seriously, wants to teach and has an engaging personality. There's all different kinds of ways to teach. but his stands the test of time imho

Yeah I was wondering how many people might react to that line he says so earnestly in 1988 lol In another video I think he says something to the effect of if someone is causing a disturbance find the proprietor and have them removed immediately. Watch the Etiquette video 1/13 it's informative also. Don't be at the bar when it's your turn. Only Bo can give instruction with such authority.

The etiquette video should be mandatory for anyone who wants to roll. That’s the biggest downfall here in Vegas during open bowling or the late night “cosmic” bowling. My kids will stand there and turn to me like “what do I do now” when someone cuts them off. It’s sad when a 9yr old has more etiquette than a 20-30yr old...

Yes Bo's good at teaching fundamentals that apply no matter what the era even though equipment changes.

@@amusement420 Aw that's SO great to know he's still alive and well (and I now realize I should have specified that it wasn't age that I was saying that, you just never know who is alive still or not because life is so tragically unpredictable for everybody) and ESPECIALLY that he is still bowling and at 77! That's SO inspiring and amazing. Your reply got me very interesting in looking him up and I will definitely check out the pinned link. I was scrolling through some bowling videos by other people, but I'm pretty sure now that I'm going to focus mainly on his bowling videos. They are just so helpful, especially for an absolute beginner (besides my badly, unresearched attempts at recreational bowling in the past). Thank you so much for the reply and thank you for the link for some other videos by him. I'm so excited for bowling class, but this video along with knowing there is more instructional videos made by him has me just beyond excited now to study up between classes with his tips. It's also always great when one gets a comment from the uploader of a video, even if one gets to the video a long time after it was uploaded. Your replying to me will now keep these videos in my memory for sure to be coming back too all semester. Thanks for the interaction!

Bo still bowls in leagues. He commentated on ABC's PBA TV for a long time. I can see him chuckling at some of the releases. Some of that has to do with the construction of the bowling balls compared to what he's using in the video.

I know what you mean. Apparently I have always been bowling Over top of the ball and getting no hook at all on the ball. I've also been trying to force speed and an unnatural hook. I was just at my local pro shop and they were nice enough to help me and my terrible form and now I have to basically relearn myself how to throw a bowling ball. It's not going to be easy and it's going to take some time.

yeah there's all kinds of crazy individual approaches and deliveries these days. A lot of might have to do to the modern bowling ball being able to get away with it. But Norm Duke just won two tourneys in a row with a classic style. I watched him bowl a 3000 game last week on the Internet.

yes habits early on can get mental and hard to break. I use finger tip grip inserts I guess they also call them lift inserts (go to a pro shop they could tell you. tell them what the problem is and maybe you can address it that way) they have a lip on them so I can grip with my first knuckle. its meant to get loft on the ball but whether I do or not it feels comfortable to me to the point I’d have a hard time using regular straight grips. also see “EQUIPMENT 2/13 BOWLING INSTRUCTION WITH NELSON BO BURTON JR | amusement420”

He is the son of Nelson Burton, Sr., who himself was a successful bowler in his day, competing with the likes of Glenn Allison and Billy Welu. I'm surprised no one has made that observation or wanted to know if they could get a pair! Those are classic. I heard a lady asking the Pro shop last week if they had leopard print shoes.l they make running shoes and bowling balls like that so I can see why she asked while standing right next to the translucent bowling balls with a bud bottle and skull inside them lol she went with basic gray. I wear white Dexters.

I am surprised, as you are, about not being able to get any pattern/color, Bowling shoes that you would like to have?! I guess you would have to go to a Cobbler, and still have some designs made, even these days.

Nice! I use a 1990's Urethane Purple Hammer for fun on open bowling with my Dad on Sundays at an old 12 lane alley we know the proprietor of. He kept score for one of my Grandpa's 300's in the plastic Columbia 16lb ball era there. He was inducted into the local Bowling HOF in the party room in the lower level. Since the LCD scoreboard shows the ball speed. I got it down to 8.9 MPH and still struck. The guy next to me crankin' it looked at me like you got to be kidding lol He strung out 5 in a row though. If I spin it and throw it harder and straighter it'll mix up the pins. I do that for spares that are all grouped in a weird way Bad leave good pickup. Back in the day everyone in leagues used Blue Hammers.

and the older guys use 10-11lb balls so they don't' get pin carry all the time or the sleeper pins. more importantly they can't get the ball speed these days. the core inside modern bowling balls let alone the surface is crazy engineering. a family friend who's a proprietor oiled a couple lanes for tourney conditions and saw their scores drop like a rock lol he said he'd prefer to oil leagues a a more challengin way but then people wouldn't come back. a kid rolled a 30 game with a crazy approach nothing like Bo shows here. as far as two-handed bowling an abomination lol I joked he should add to his sign no smoking no outside food no two-handed bowling lol he does allow pizza and cake for b-day parites but they have to buy the drinks from him. he does a lot of b-days. they're there til 3am on busy Saturday nights. a 12 lane old alley.

google "ebonite scream ghostface bowling ball pics" and "skull bowling ball pics" and "beer bottle bowling ball pics". I joke the in game adjustment for some guys is another beer.

@@amusement420 Yeah, the difference is almost night and day, from back then to now(At least with the strike/first ball). I wouldn't go below a 14 lb ball, in my opinion.

@@knightlife98 yeah my Dad is older so he went with a 10 lb Columbia Scout with a basic pancake weight. he has two knew replacements so we thought lighter would be better. He bowled a 181 open bowling sunday. that's all we do these days. he ptiched for Ohio State so shooting single or two pin spares is like throwing a baseball out there. he's using a three step delivery. I use a 1993 urethane 15 lb purple hammer! a great house oil shot spare ball. I use it for the strike ball only because my old columbia titanium messenger I have a video of is just barely under 16 lbs. and I don't bowl often enough to be able to handle that weight.I use finger tip grips for loft but at a certain point it doesn't matter so now it's for feel. there was a time in the early 90's when all league bowlers had a blue urethane hammer. the only way they could tell it was there is engraved initials lol my grandpa's 300 games in the 50's 60's and 70's they used 16 lb plastic coated. you had to be more accurate. I think team USA they make them bowl some games with plastic to learn accuracy. my grandpa ended up in the local bowling HOF. not easy to do around these parts where a lot of people bowl.

Its a natural pendulum swing.... higher backswing will provide ample forward swing with good release tendency and follow through. At the height of backswing, you should feel the ball hanging by your finger/thumb grip. Just hold that wrist position through to release.

Glad you found it helpful. There's a lot of great videos by non pros and some by proven tour pros. But it's cool this old VHS with fundamentals by Bo Burton has stood the test of time.
