dude great video for someone trying to see if they want to throw a gpu in there or not. The PSU is so specific in these you basically have to run a low profile.

Hey MrWhitieanga. I hope you don't mind if I add my report on this build to your post. I bought a Dell 9020 SFF (i5-4570+8gb RAM+1Tb HDD) and installed the same Gigabyte LP GTX 1050 ti card onto the PCIex4 slot. After playing a lot of Fallout 4 on the GeForce Experience optimized settings (high-ultra/1080p) I can report 52-60 fps consistently. However, the temperature is an issue. I installed CAM monitor and my card was going as high as 81°C, which is ok still, but not recommended for gpu lifespan. So I removed the cover and pulled out the psu, laid it on top of the open case and tried again... -10°C difference after a couple of hours. Another important point is that particularly Fallout4 seems to freeze my gpu temperature sensor if I run it from the desktop launcher. This is a bad thing because the card doesn't report high temp and the fan doesn't spin up, leading to serious overheating. It doesn't seem to happen when I launch from GeForce Experience, I get normal temperature readings and fan control then. Also... hooked up to a wattmeter, power draw for the whole system has never gone above 155W and usually runs at 50-70W when not gaming, so the PSU rated at 255 is perfectly capable of handling it. Just letting ppl know in case they want to replicate the build.

Thanks for the feedback, really appreciate it. I’ve built 3 of these for friends and I don’t get any feedback unless something goes wrong but yeah my main concern is the gpu over heating in the low profile case especially as we are coming into summer. And thanks for the tip about launching from geforce experience I will pass that on, cheers

I have an Optiplex 9020 SFF with 8GB of RAM. After watching this video I took the plunge and bought the same card; after installing it I can report that it works a treat. I am now playing SC2 on far higher settings (game suggested ones) than the IG, as one would anticipate. The card runs quietly, in fact I can barely hear it even when I have no programs running. Update for you all. I worried that the 4x slot would be a bottleneck for this card so I took the board out and tested it I'm the 16x too. Basically no difference. The card/system is not bus-limited. So by my reckon Ng this is about the fastest card you can get for this system. Extrely pleased with the results. The overall spec is technically not fast enough for VR but my use case is only very basic. I use a PSVR headset for sim racing I'm Assetto Corsa and the like. It works a charm. The card is plenty fast enough to maintain 60fps in VR, which I'm the PSVR is very comfortable indeed. Happy bunny. I have a VR gaming rig for next to nothing.

@rymixxx
@rymixxx 4 года назад
@@kivelocity932 No I didn't. This was my main concern with this work, but there was and is no need to. The card draws very little power even under full load. I used some GPU testing software to corroborate this observation (I forget the name but will find it if you're interested). The stock PSU is barely under half load at worst. I run Assetto Corsa with three monitors on my setup. Absolutely rock solid, 60fps, no overheating. Very, very happy with my bargain gaming PC.

The processors used in current consoles right now is their main weakness, even a 3rd or 4th gen core i5 con outclass them quite easily and the gtx 1050 Ti does yield higher detail and higher fps at full HD in most titles than both the PS4 and Xbox One base models, just get over it.

Just picked up this card and have it hooked up to the PCIx4 slot. I gotta say I am quite impressed on what this card can do. Tested DOOM with everything on high except shadow and motion blur (medium) Was getting between 54 and 61fps on 1080p windowed mode (Using a 1440p monitor at the moment). Tried our Divinity Original Sin 2 with everything on max except lighting shadows (disabled) as that feature was causing the directx to crash. Was getting solid 60fps all across on 1080p windowed. Definitely worth getting if you are upgrading an SFF computer like the 9020SFF. The specs on my spare 9020 SFF besides the graphics card are: Intel i5 4750 @ 3.2 ghz 16 GB RAM 1 TB WD RAID Low Power HDD from 2012 @ 64mb/s cache

Hi Mr Whitianga , I assume you had no problem installing it in the PCI Express x16 (wired as x4) data width (maximum) which is the only port in the Dell 9020 SFF, as the true 16X is to close to the power supply. Did you manage to get any of the gfx overclocking programs to work? as I dont think they do because of installing in the 4X port? Thanks for the Vid!!

After 3 similar builds I haven't had any problems using the x4 slot. I did benchmarks using the 1050ti in the x16 and x4 slot and there was nothing in it. The x16 slot has slightly higher benchmark score. I'm not overclocking in this build.

Putting a PCI-E x16 in a open-ended x4 is just going to bottle neck it from 4Gb/s to 1Gb/s. Sure, it works but won't the performance be terribly compromised? And lastly, seeing this card is on the minimum requirement of Oculus Rift, would it be able to run on the Optiplex 9020 in this setup?

@@kapokee I looked into it since I was getting no replies, and while I'm not sure why the 1050ti was power rating was higher than what it can actually perform on, it can and will work completely fine in a 9020, also the card is not high enough in performance to fully saturate x8 lanes on the PCIe. I checked on DELL website, it says slot 1 (PCIe x1) only has bandwidth of 500Mb/s; while slot 2 (PCIe x16) has 16Gb/s. Won't this slow down significantly the GPU performance?

I benchmarked both slots and the performance difference was minimal, there was nothing in it.

Can’t recommend any better cards for this case. The card has to support small form factor so has to use a low profile bracket and work with the 255w dell power supply so you pretty limited with the options.

Hello good video and I have a question, can I use this video card in optiplex 980 sff with the power supply this already have?
@MrWhitianga
@MrWhitianga 7 лет назад
I dunno, the 980 sff has a 235 watt psu and the 9020 has 255 watt. You can only try. If it doesn’t work you can always use the cpu, ram and h/d from the 980 and build a system where it will work. That was my plan b

Hi I had 980 SFF and am now having 990 SFF. The two form factors are different (thanks to weird terminologies by Dell). 990 SFF actually is 980 DT form factor. So I think 980 SFF is too small for the graphics card but 980 DT should work fine..

In Optiplex 9020, due to poor design, you have to use x4. It feels weird using that tiny slot with overhang (while leaving the full length slot alone), but it works beautifully.

Hello.. I have a prebuilt Dell optiplex 990. I bought a Gainward GTX 1050 and a corsair vs550 500w. I think that the card is installed properly, because its fans are spinning. When I connect the card to the montior with HDMI, I get a "No Signal" message. When I connect my onboard intel graphics to monitor everything works fine.. When I try to install drivers, I get a message that says: cannot recognize gtx 1050 (or something like that).Bios is not reconizing the card.. When I go to the bios, it says that all PCI express slots are empty.(bios is : A19 - latest version). Everything is updated to the latest version too (chipsets,etc). The slot is not dead, I had a sound card before and it was working fine. The card is also not dead. I've tested it on my old pc and it worked. I also opened a thread on the Dell Forum and a guy told me that I should turn CSM ON and Secure Boot OFF but there is no option for that on my bios, even though I am running windows 10 64bit uefi. Can you help me?
@MrWhitianga
@MrWhitianga 7 лет назад
Not sure how many pci slots your 990 has but I assume you’ve tried everyone one and it looks like you’ve tried everything I can think of. Unfortunately it looks like the gainward just doesn’t work with the 6 year old 990 motherboard. I’ve just built my 3rd dell 9020 low profile with gigabyte gtx 1050 ti and haven’t had a problem with any of them. If I had a 990 I would have tested the gigabyte 1050 in it.
