Thank you so much! This helped me passthrough an Nvidia 1050 to a modified R710. Thank you!

Interesting,, video. I have been using ESXi for years,, but are right now looking in to this Proxmox,, just because I think ESXi becomes more and more a money machine. And one of the things I wanted to do on Proxmox,, was to passthrough a GPU,, for my remote video editing server. And you video shows that this is possible ! Thanx

You should do a video on the setup when you do it!

Thanks! This worked with my RX 480 in a Supermicro X8DTG-DF. I was unable to boot from the virtual CD drive like usual but was able to install windows from a USB drive that I passed through to the VM. Not sure why it behaved that way.

Hi super video ! What do you use for controle your windows vm on your mac ? :)

TheIronStrife I prefer a program called Remoter because it handles SSH sessions, VNC and RDP. It’s pretty handy.

@@TheIronstrife No problem at all. Their website is remoterlabs.com/ and they are the app is in the App Store. But, I'm not sure it supports French.

I'm running ESXI 6.7 on my dell R710 and tried everything to passthrough the same card you have. Big fail. I found out that my server is a Gen 1 and can't passthrough a GPU. It has two xeon 5650s and two 870 watt power supply's 24 gigs of ram

Interesting, my in use R710 that I used in this video is a Gen 2. But I also have a Gen1 below it. I have not tried to add a GPU to it or do passthrough. Are you sure it's a limitation of the Gen 1 R710 or is it a limitation in ESXI? I'm not sure I believe it until I try it...

Well.. it's month since your post, but if you still interesting.. ESXI actually very cranky about gpu passthrough. It has official support of this technology for very small amount of very expencive professional hardware, like quadro k6000. And it most likely it's completely not working with home desktop stuff like Nvidia GTX or AMD RX. Basicaly to passthrough your hardware you just need support of VT-D (or IOMMU on AMD). I've recently make it work (gpu passthroug), both with Nvidia and AMD cards, on couple of AM3 motherboards, on DELL T5600 (2011 socket) and on x58 platform (socket 1366), using unraid. And on other hand - can't get gpu passthrough work with any of hardware combinations on ESXI. Hope it helps, in some way.

Thanks for the input... That's pretty much what I've heard/read about ESXI and GPU passthrough.

Wrong Brand of Server MGD9000 :-) I wanted to do this on ESXi 5.0 and a IBM x3650 M1,, that was also not possible,,, But with the x3650 M2 with Intel Xeon 5500 or now 5600 CPU's it is possible. Just have to enable the VT-d, VT-x in UEFI/Bios one of them, I forget witch :-)

I am having a x79 motherboard and it is a ddr3. Can I install a gddr5 gtx 750ti in it? I am a newbie too and I want to change it to a server with 16 gigs of ram and a Xeon e5.
@AllenSampsell

I think with any machine the limitation on the Graphics cards will be physical Size, Power, and PCIE bus speed. If your motherboard is PCIE 2.0 then you're not going to get the full speeds possible to a PCIE 3.0 graphics card.

@@AllenSampsell actually you lose barely any performance from using a pcie 3.0 graphics card in a 2.0 slot.

Noah Baatz interesting. I’ve seen people say that putting and X16 card in an X8 slot doesn’t make you loose too much. But I guess I assumed that was a 2.0 card in a 2.0 slot. Any info you can point me to would be appreciated.

Hi, I have a question about installing a graphics card in r710. Does the gpu only work through proxmox? I install windows 7 and windows 10 without proxmox and without a virtual machine and gtx1080 does not work on my r710. Excuse me, I'm a newbie, I'd like to start working with servers.
@AllenSampsell
@AllenSampsell 5 лет назад
First just forget the operating system/hypervisor and look at the specs of the graphics card versus the R710. The R710 is a pcie 2.0 X8 slot. I'm betting your gtx1080 might need pcie 3.0 and at the very least requires external power that isn't readily available in the R710. Bottom line, there are definitely limitations to what GPU you can put into an R710 (without serious modifications) just based on it's age.

@@AllenSampsell Thank you very much for answering I have been trying to solve the problem for days, all that remains is to try the 8-pin connectors, I only have an 8-pin connector.

I have a R610 which has the same 5520 chipset as the R710. I installed the latest bios and there is no VT-d parameter in the BIOS. When I dug deeper, I found that the 5520 and 5500 chipset has a silicon bug (Errata) which makes IOMMU unreliable and crashes the system. That's why Dell removed that VT-d option from the bios even though both the processor and chipset support IOMMU. My question to you is how your IOMMU is working? Are you using an older BIOS revision that has the VT-d switch? I tried your instructions and my WINdows VM reports Header Proxmox Virtual Environment 7.1-4 Search Virtual Machine 100 on node 'lmimf-vpc1' Server View Logs swtpm_setup: Not overwriting existing state file. kvm: -device vfio-pci,host=0000:04:00.0,id=hostpci1.0,bus=ich9-pcie-port-2,addr=0x0.0,multifunction=on: vfio 0000:04:00.0: failed to setup container for group 15: Failed to set iommu for container: Operation not permitted stopping swtpm instance (pid 2093) due to QEMU startup error TASK ERROR: start failed: QEMU exited with code 1

I’m not using any special older BIOS. I’m not familiar with the R610 so maybe it’s specific to that setup. If I recall correctly there were some instructions on iommu and vfio settings in the instructions on the Proxmox site that were about ensuring iommu was setup correctly/working. So maybe check their site. Sorry I can’t be more specific.
