Dell Vostro 3250 - RAM and Graphics Upgrade Using Only a Screwdriver

Join me as I show you how to disassemble a Dell Vostro 3250 in order to upgrade the RAM and the graphics card using just a simple screwdriver.
RAM Upgrade is 4GB DDR3L by Crucial available here:

Graphics card is a 2nd hand Nvidia GeForce 405 (but not really an upgrade, just a way for me to get DisplayPort output)

@@lparv mine is zotac 1030 LP....but u can find one from gigabyte or palit also (be sure it's LP = low profile)

I have concern about the 180 watt psu on the dell 3250, will it support the rx6400 ,it has a power draw of 53 watts

I don't know as I've never previously considered the power draw of any additions. 25 years ago I used to build PCs and back then you just added what you needed and the PSU was fine. The high power demands of graphics cards is a relatively recent thing and by the time it was relevant I had "left" the market. I'd be surprised if an RX6400 based card would fit though - most look either too fat or too long. Have you checked?

Certainly I wouldn't open up a Dell that was in warranty for fear of causing an issue. But I don't know for sure as I've not read the terms of the warranty!

Sorry I'm so late on this but I bought a dell Vostro 5880 and it was having issues so they sent a technician to fix it and I asked him about upgrading the Ram and he told me that I could do it and it would not interfere with dells warranty on the computer

Hi Jung, thanks for watching my video. You need a low profile card with a small heat sink that doesn't interfere with the PSU. There's lots of choice out there, so you should something suitable.

Hi Juan, thanks for watching the video. I have just today ordered an SSD for my Dell so I will do a video very soon. Any 2.5" SATA SSD should work and I've gone for a Crucial BX500 480GB which I got from Amazon (amzn.to/3oTBsv5)

Hi... Hope u r fine there . There is an issue in my i3 8th gen desktop while changing RAM , i couldnot pack properly the outer case my power button is free not working its loose or u can say free couldnot on the cpu kindly guide or demonstrate please..

I don't have this machine any more, but the best option would be to take it all apart and re-assemble it again, taking your time to ensure everything is in the correct place. Good luck!

Hi, I'm from Brazil. My Dell is a Vostro 3681. Can I put RAM from different brands with the same configuration?

Hi, thanks for watching my video. Generally speaking you can mix different brands of RAM as long as the specifications are identical. But I have no experience of the Vostro 3681 so I don't know what those specifications need to be.

@@MostlyHelpful On the SanDisk page we have the option to enter the desktop or notebook model and they give us the configured and compatible RAM. I did this and it worked perfectly.

As well as needing a low profile mount card you also need to check that the card isn't too long nor too tall. It also depends who makes the card, since different brands make them in different sizes. As a result, without more information, it's hard to say.

Hi Minh, thanks for your messages on my videos. I've done some quick research and both the i3 6100 and i7 6700 are "Skylake" 100 series processors and both physically fit the LGA 1151 socket on the motherboard your Dell 3250. Therefore it should work fine.

Hi Biswadeep, thanks for stopping by. I'm afraid I don't know what graphics these PCs support plus I have already sold my 3250 and now use a different Dell. I am about to upgrade the SSD on that one though, so do watch it if you can.

Please tell me the processor model, I can’t understand which 6th generation processor supports DDR3L ram, they brought me one for recovery without a processor and memory.

That computer I've since sold but your processor choice will be dictated by what the board can accommodate. But in short, any processor that fits on the board will support DDR3, so check the socket type and go from there. Good luck.

Hi, I did do some research into upgrading the graphics card but I swapped to a Vostro 3268 and that came with quite a competent onboard GPU (Intel HD 630) so never pursued it. It's worth saying that I don't play games on my PC so don't need lots of graphics processing power.

I don't think it will fit because it's too tall. These Dells are Small Form Factor so only take half height cards. All GTX 750 equipped graphics cards seem to be full height only.

@@VANMINH84 Shouldn't matter, they are both LGA1151 skylake processors. The "k" runs at a higher clock speed and consumes more power, but as long the PSU can cope then it should be fine. But I'm just Googling this stuff so you should also do your own research just to be sure.

Hi Andre, thanks for watching my video. You need a low profile card that doesn't have a large heat sink on it so as to not interfere with the PSU. Mine was an NVidia GeForce 405 but it's actually quite a slow card now and I am sure there are better alternatives.

I am trying to upgrade a Dell Vostro 3250 RAM. Got a 8GB DDR3L but the computer will not recognize it. I am scratching my head. Anybody has upgraded this model RAM please let me know if I am missing something here.

Hi, thanks for watching my video. DDR3L is the type I used and it should be recognised. Assuming it's fully inserted in the slot, can you get the BIOS to recognise it before the system attempts to boot? If not, then there might be a problem with the RAM. Good luck!

@@yeahboah307The "thing where it fits" is the PCI-E slot. DDR is a type of RAM so it is unrelated to whether something will fit or not. As for the GT1030, I am not familiar with this GPU so I don't know if it will fit.

Hola Juan! My Spanish isn't great, but I think you are asking about the flashing light under the power button. This is just showing you that the system is accessing the HDD. The more data moving to/from the HDD the more it will flash.

Well the graphics card I put in was an Nvidia unit (Geforce 405) but I assume you mean a more modern one. The difficulty is that there isn't a lot of space, but I am sure there's a few options out there.

In this case it was a OEM spec Nvidia GeForce 405 card, made by Fujitsu. It's actually slower than the onboard graphics but I needed to output to DisplayPort and this was the easiest way to achieve it.

Thanks Andrew, you raise a good question. Going from Display Port (PC) to HDMI (Monitor) is easy and cheap, adapters are £5 or so and unpowered. However going from HDMI (PC) to Display Port (Monitor) is not cheap as the adapter needs to be powered, and the cheapest one on Amazon UK currently is £16. This graphics card was £7 all in.

@@MostlyHelpful there is actually a regular cable with display port on one end and hdmi on the other. I'm using one right now because some Freesync monitors will only work with certain nvidia cards using display port.

Oh I see, it wasn't clear. I have no idea, I used this computer to run my business and then I swapped out for a Vostro 3268, which is noticeably quicker but I've never used it to play games either.

Hi Michael, I've not tried it but as a low profile card it "should" fit. However, if it has a tall heatsink and/or fan arrangement then maybe not. Also you will need to check that the card's power requirements can be met by the existing Dell PSU. Good luck!

I believe the motherboard in these Dell Vostros is a standard small ATX (micro or mini I am not sure) meaning that it could be swapped out, yes. Not something I have investigated though as I bought it specifically for the case design.

Hi, thanks for your comment, I really appreciate it. I am not aware of a 4GB video card that would fit and as you've discovered there isn't very much room at all. I guess these are intended as business PCs with no real need for dedicated GPUs.

Yes, as long as you have a matching memory stick, it really is that easy. The best way to check exactly the RAM spec that you need is to either enter your Service Code on the Dell website to look it up or run the model number through the Crucial RAM checker on their website, www.crucial.com. Hi Samya, thanks for watching the video. Graphics card configuration is a low profile PCI- Express card, in this case an OEM spec Fujitsu card with Nvidia GeForce 405. With these small form factor Dells there isn't much space due to the proximity of the PSU, so you need to choose wisely. Good luck!
