A real world review, focused on the benefits of such a screen for a home/office worker, rather than a gamer or creator. It has convinced me to go this way. Thank you Michael. One question - you look to be sitting about as close as I would be to my laptop screen (around an arm's length away). I presume you find that a comfortable distance on the eyes, even for such a large screen?
@MichaelOHanian
@MichaelOHanian 3 года назад
Thank you! A good rule-of-thumb is that a display should be about an arm's length away (at least 20 inches). The bigger the display the further away you can get. I personally use the U38 Curved an arm length + 6inches away. You should also adjust the monitor height so that the top of the screen is at, or slightly below, eye level.

I love the KVM functionality of this machine and I have one PC connected by USB-C and two via HDMI all of which switch easily. But I’ve had three of these monitors all of which exhibit bad back light bleed and they are very fragile with the screen so easy to damage. So I use it but it’s limited in a number of ways.

Wow, amazing. I didn't know a monitor exists that can display content from 2 separate laptop computers at the same time, that's super slick! Currently my setup is using a Philips 27" 4K monitor whereby I'm using a separate laptop for work and another laptop for personal. I use an HDMI switcher device (Insignia brand from Best Buy) with 3 HDMI ports whereby I need to press the button on the switcher (not splitter) to toggle between HDMI port 1 for my work laptop and port 2 for my personal. There is usually a few long seconds of delay before the next laptop shows up on the monitor when switching between different ports. I also use the Logitech MX Keys keyboard that has Bluetooth pairing for 3 different devices, so that means I need to press a button for the keyboard to pair with my work computer, or press a different button to pair with my personal computer. But it appears the Dell monitor can show content from 2 separate laptops, plus can pair the same keyboard for the 2 separate laptops. That's just too cool!! My only slight concern is this curved design, which I've never had a curved monitor before. But I've been reading that many users quickly adapt to the curved design with no problem.
@MichaelOHanian

Casey. Thank you! You will like curved monitors. It is on like curved TV's. Curved monitor are more ergonomic. As you look left-to-right on the curved display your eyes don't have to refocus as much (less eye strain) compared to having traditional dual displays. Also, Dell Display Manager makes it very easy (an quick) to carve your display in to multiple display windows. I have been using a the Dell U38 for a year now and I will never go back to a traditional display.

Great video Michael, I liked it so much that it was the main reason I purchased the Dell C3422WE and I love it. The only disappointing thing was that there was no documentation on how to download, setup and use the Dell Display Manager. Can you create a video on how you create those shortcuts with the application and other tips and trick? Also, it would have been nice for the monitor to support Bluetooth. In other words, I have a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard and I could not sync them to the monitor directly, so I had to buy another keyboard/mouse combo with a USB wireless receiver.

Hi MIchael. After this review I went ahead and purchased one of these monitors. I'm trying to setup the PIP view the same way what you have done at 6:58sec into your video but I can't seem to figure out the scaling. When switching to PIP using the Display Manager, both inputs are showing up on the screen in 21:9 aspect ratio instead of full screen. Is there any additional setting that I need to adjust in order to stretch both inputs to 4:3 the way had it done automatically? I'd appreciate your comment. thanks!

@MichaelOHanian
@MichaelOHanian 3 года назад
Thank you! You can extend (or duplicate) the notebook screens to the U34.You doing that while creating a PnP on the U34 (Splitting the U34 display). This is a hard split; meaning your computers think they are the only computer using the monitor. You cannot simply drag our mouse from one system to the other. You will need to jump from one system to the other via OSD or using Dell Display Manager.

@MichaelOHanian
@MichaelOHanian 3 года назад
@kiwijana Thank you! Great question. Not sure if I now the answer. Dell Display Manager works at the PC level. You don't need DDM to hook both PC's to the Display, but you do need DDM to jump back and forth (live). If you wanted PnP , you could set it up on your home PC but you could not jump back from your work once you are there. Let me play around with my systems this weekend and I will let you know if I can find a solution. One thought is using a multi device mouse and keyboard. In this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2uRn7n-kW2k.html I demonstrated hooking two PC's to the Dell U4320Q. @MichaelOHanian

It is possible. You could even carve it up as much as 12 programs at once. For your question about 4 excel sheets. You could do that but I would set up the "shift command" in DDM. This allow you place an application into a carveout only when you hold the "shift" key down. That allows you to quick enlarge a program to full screen and then quick reduce it to a window.

Just found your video as I'm researching how to clean up my home office space. I have been a power user at work with 3 x 24" monitors, but recently downsized to 2 monitors. I've seen the new 34" with the USB-C and was wondering if I could connect a home computer as well as my work laptop. I just kept saying "this is what I want!" I also appreciate the tips on Dell Display Monitor as having the monitor act as 2 screens, having both computer & laptop up simultaneously, and the other tips is perfect. My only question is that I do alot of MS Teams meetings throughout the day. If you separate the screen into the 2 sections, and you were to share a screen on MS Teams, does it share the entire monitor or does it recognize the 2 different windows? Others who have the wide monitor haven't done anything and it shares the entire screen and creates a smaller image in the MS Teams display (and the only thing keeping me thinking of doing 2 x 27" Dell monitors). Do you have any thoughts on that, or have you tested it? Otherwise, great and informative video. Thanks Michael!
@MichaelOHanian
@MichaelOHanian 8 месяцев назад
Great question. If you use Dell Display Manager to carve you display into two displays, MS Teams will still try to take over the full display. You can force it into one side but when you first launch it will want to take the full display. That being said, some of our new displays have a technology call MSTi (not to be confused with MST). MSTi allows you to carve up your display and the operating system is fooled into thinking it is multiple displays. In this case MS Team would behave and stay on it own display. The U4324QE 43" 4K display has this technology.

You have some limitations with notebooks. Best you can get would be 4 displays using a Dell dock such as the WD22TB. Even with that dock you will have limitations to GPU that you have on the notebook. General rule, 3 displays when using dock, 2 displays when using a hub display. Going beyond 3/4 you would have to go with a desktop with a GPU or get an external GPU expansion and hook you notebook into that.

Is my understanding correct? I am unable to install DDM on the office PC. I can then switch between the 2 PCs via the OSD of the screen? Is it direct or does it take several "clicks" - how much less easy than with DDM?
@MichaelOHanian
@MichaelOHanian 3 года назад
Thank you! You are correcting in all your assumptions. It does take a couple of clicks on the OSD to switch systems. DDM makes the process a lot easier. Here is a link to the Users Guide for the P3421W; page 60 talks about KVM. downloads.dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_electronics_accessories/esuprt_electronics_accessories_monitors/dell-p3421w-monitor_user%27s-guide_en-us.pdf

Really need your help with the monitor, So basically I use to work with two screens connected to dell docking station , now that I got this screen Ive noticed I can use the screen ports as a docking, LAN , DONGELS andmore connected to it and it takes only one usbc port to my computer , now , how can I connect second monitor to the system withour connecting the disply port to my computer directly? I tried to connect the disply port between the two screens but it won't work.

You are not going to like my answer. There is a limitation to MST that doesn't allow you to daisy chain curved displays. There are a few other limitations, but this one is causing your issue. Note: Dell does not set the protocol for MST, it is an industry standard.

Great video - very informative. Quick question, can the monitor power two Dell Precisions 5540 workstation laptops? I have a personal and a work machine that are identical.

Thank Ricky! Great question. It can only charge one system. There is only enough power to drive one system. Alternative would be to connect a docking station on one of your systems and power the other off the display.

How are the keyboard and the mouse connected? Directly to the monitor and the monitor has a separate USB cable running to the desktop and the laptop?

Hi Mike, thanks for the video. I have an Asus Zenbook UX461UA that I am trying to connect to a Dell U3421we monitor. Currently, I have the laptop connected to the monitor using an HDMI and a USB 5 gbps. I am not sure if this is the right way to connect, but I am using the USB 5 gbps because this is the only way my wireless mouse and keyboard seem to work (connected directly to monitor). Lastly, and the issue I am phasing here, is that the screen looks really stretched on the dell monitor. Any idea why that may be? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Moises, if you are connection via HDMI you will need a second USB-A to USB-B cable to go from you Asus to the display. See users guide (page 11) and see ports 7-1/7-2. Those are your USB upstream ports. If you had DisplayPort on our Asus you would only need a single cable. Hope this helps. dl.dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_electronics_accessories/esuprt_electronics_accessories_monitors/dell-u3419w-monitor_user's-guide_en-us.pdf

For the desktop that isn’t using usb c I assume their is a downstream cable to the desktop? Is that how you can switch between the two computers and use the same mouse and keyboard?

I have a new Dell ultrasharp monitor using it with Macbook pro and having some issues. My question: There is available a monitor firmware for both Windows and Mac operation systems. When coming out of factory are they loaded only with Windows firmware or with both installed to the monitor. Thanks!

Not that I am aware of. Here is a link to a copy of the technical guide. It has a trouble shooting section: dl.dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_electronics_accessories/esuprt_electronics_accessories_monitors/dell-u3419w-monitor_user's-guide_en-us.pdf

I’ve got the same monitor! But I just don’t know how to set the shortcuts to change the input(home and work pc). Neither the Picture in Picture shortcut… could you please make a video explaining it or maybe text a reply to this comment? THANK YOU!!!

Would've liked to see if the PBP mode also adjust the aspect ratio when you changed the resolutions of the input source (e.g. having one source in a 16:9 res + another in a 5:9 res), that's the only reason I landed on this video.

PbP is going to split the screen equally. See page 8 dl.dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_display_projector/esuprt_display/dell-u3419w-monitor_user's-guide2_en-us.pdf

I need to purchase several monitors for my office. Deciding between the Dell C3422WE and U3421WE. Are the panels the same, UltraSharp is not listed on the conference model. Also, do both support the new DDM release for Mac?
@MichaelOHanian
@MichaelOHanian Год назад
The glass are very similar. There are a few more ports on the U34. The question would be if you want a camera and microphone that are on the C34 but not on the U34. Also the U34 is silver back panel vs C34 having a black pack panel. Both support DDM for Mac.

great video ! does the USB-C need to be connected in order for the USB-A connections on the monitor to work? In other words if I don't have a USB-C connected to the monitor will I still be able to connect my keyboard and mouse to the back of the monitor and will act as a hub?
@MichaelOHanian
@MichaelOHanian 3 года назад
You don't have to use the USB-C but you will lose the video and power charging. If you simply want the monitor to ack as a dock for only you mouse and keyboard you can do that via USB.

@@maguedistafan9204 Awesome! Thank you for buying Dell! Make sure you use the USB upstream cable when connecting to the notebook to the monitor. Looks like a traditional USB connection on one end and a square connection on the other.

This is very nice, I have the S3220DGF 165hz monitor and I love it, I ditched having 2 monitors and it was a nice way to clean my desk up. Do I think multiple monitors are better? Yes and no. My wife does prefer having 3 screens for work which I can see why. Do they have this ability on the smaller 24/27" monitors and can we do this type of multi pc kvm setup with having 3 screens?
@MichaelOHanian
@MichaelOHanian 3 года назад
I do like having multiple monitors. I was using the U38 wide screen with a P27 on the side. Now I have the U43 with the P27. We do have the U2422DE and U2722HE that support the same KVM function.
