Dell's QC is so frustrating! You'd think they'd iron out the same issues by now. Does yours have the hinge issue, when you carry it like a book and the cover opens? Still, a beast of a machine! Thanks for the review! Always like them, chap!

@@zenec_ that's not what I hear. They, Dell, officially announced the same about my frost white 9500. Not only did it come with the same clackety trackpad but also the hinge issue I mention above. The Dell subreddit is filled with similar reports about this new generation. I wish they would go away, too, since it's an otherwise awesome series of laptops. Alas, it doesn't look that way.

It's a marketing tactic. They want to lower the price on the cheapest base model so that it looks like the product is a great value. Then when the audience gets reeled in, they offer the more expensive model with the bigger battery and shinier screen, and make it seem like the obvious choice to spend a bit of extra money on. This is something every company does in every industry not just tech.

So what have they screwed up this time? BIOS? GPU thermal limits? DPC latency? There's always something with the XPS line that sneaks by the tech RU-vidrs that are distracted by the shiny things. An AMD processor option would be a welcome addition across the XPS lineup, intel is great for certain needs, but price and battery life still leave much to be desired especially with Apple’s M1 MacBooks and Macs disrupting the market (in a good way) with its innovation. I want an XPS form factor and I need a Windows OS, but the “bang for the buck” value of an Apple MBA feels almost too good to pass up that it may finally be worth switching to a new OS and ecosystem despite the lack of touchscreen or alternative screen options like OLED. AMD offerings would be a nice middle ground, having better battery life and more competitive price points while still being pretty decent performance wise.
@liquidmojo
@liquidmojo 2 года назад
@@tomgreen9207 Yeah Intel has taken cues from the M1 and built both Performance and Efficiency cores into the 12th Gen Alder Lake CPU chipset. The XPS 13+ has killer performance vs other laptops in its size class because of its innovative case design and cooling solution. I just want to see a lower priced and perhaps more battery efficient AMD build using the XPS “ultra light and thin” design language. But that’s probably not going to happen since Dell has been locking the top end builds to Intel.

My 9700 from last year has this issue where it draws power from the battery when playing games even when it's plugged on with the charger. Also, if you don't angle the laptop appropriately and game, it will shut automatically because of the heat. However, if I dock it and the laptop has room for cooling, it will be okay. I wonder if this was fixed in the 9710?
@MBAPresents
@MBAPresents 3 года назад
Drawing power from the battery is not a defect. Dell did this intentionally so the charger won't be too big. It's the same 130W charger that comes with the XPS 15. It would've been better if the buyer can pick which charger they want.

Got an M1 while I wait for the MBP 16' to come out. Dell doesn't cut it any more. Bought an Inspiron Black Edition for my son last year and it's a great laptop with fab 4K touchscreen and Xe Max but the Dell customer experience is very underwhelming. Food for thought, @The Tech Chap: As a tech user this trend of "creator" laptops which lose the numeric pad is incredibly annoying. Sure, it's no loss for people who use Adobe Premiere all day long, but I don't. I'm an engineer and inevitably this means data entry and calculations, and that's what a numeric pad is for. I'd look forward to a "performance laptops with full-size keyboards" showdown. Much typing of strings of numbers using only the top-row of the keyboard is tedious enough to be worth swerving a laptop to avoid. I think it is worth bearing in mind that while many people probably never use a numeric pad, there are also technical users such as myself for whom a numeric pad is a must. Open up a desktop calculator application and start doing maths and see how you get along.

@@Thetechchap The laptop weighs 1.3 kg, half the 2.55 kg of XPS 17. The price is also cheaper by $270. LG Gram 17 ($1800) + eGPU Case ($300) + RTX 3060 ($330) = *$2,430* XPS 17 (i7/16/512/3060/4K) = *$2,700* But when this becomes a real killer combo is if you need a 2-in-1 function. LG Gram 16 2-in-1 or Samsung Galaxy Book Pro 360 15 paired with an eGPU is more convenient than carrying the super heavy XPS 17 AND a 13" Tablet (like iPad Pro 12 / Tab S7+ / Surface Pro) in your bag. I'm gonna just answer this question now... yes. Yes it was. So long story short I got a Dell Inspiron 16 plus first because it had a lot of similar features but at a more reasonable price... but I've been having problems with the track bad and turns out the damn thing wont let me factory reset it- I can't use the option to download windows from the could and local instal just brings me to the advance start up trouble shooting section and even then it doesn't give me the option to reset it. So I ended doing what I should have done in the first place... getting a refurbished Dell XPS 17 (1TB os storage,16gb of ram, UHD+ display) and returning the Inspirion 16 plus. It's a shame because the 16 plus was actually quiet nice in a lot of ways. The screen was also beautiful with realitively similiar bessles and while they keyboard wasn't the best it was still nice to type and the speakers were decent and it had surprisingly good battery life, but it can't compare to the XPS 17. The screen itself was worth the money, but add to just an overall better build quality and speakers and keyboard and the list goes on and on. This was one of the best purchases I've made and I feel confident this is going to last me a long time.

It probably won't if I had to guess as it might need an extra 5-10W or so. I have gone for this spec but there is no activity that I will be engaged in where both the GPU and CPU will be maxed out. Gaming doesn't cap out the CPU from my understanding and if I'm going to be taking the CPU to 100% I won't be using the GPU. I will say that the figures you have provided aren't underestimates of their power usage from my understanding. The CPU can use more than that but under sustained loads it will keep to that 45W figure and the 70W figure for the GPU is its max usage, this leaves you with 15W for the screen, fans, SSD, RAM, speakers, inefficiency in the PSU etc and I just can't see that being enough

@@someguy7564 How is this config I was planning on getting it? How long does the battery last and are there any battery drain issues with the i7?
@someguy7564
@someguy7564 3 года назад
@@thecolossus4244 It's been working well so far. I think I get 8 or so hours out of it with video streaming. I'm expecting that to improve slightly with updates in the near future as processors are always getting more efficient from a work done/power perspective. I'm not aware of any issue with the device not sleeping correctly. When I press the power button it stays asleep as expected but I've not monitored the battery over a day of sleep to see how much it drops One thing I have noticed is the colour calibration is a bit weird. I don't have a better way of describing this but it's almost like the colours are too saturated, additionally whites look a bit more yellow than I would expect. I don't think this is a flaw of the panel but it doesn't look like I'd expect. In terms of gaming it performs ok although I notice the lack of adaptive sync and 144hz refresh rate. In Minecraft I'm able to get mid 40s average frame rate with RT on with a new world. I haven't really played much to give an opinion on it. The fans ramp up but no more than you'd expect with a form factor like this

Great review!! Thinking about buying an XPS 17. Does opening the laptop to do upgrades yourself void the warranty?

Not in my experience. I've used warranty on an XPS that had the ssd, wifi card and ram upgraded by me and they didn't make an issue out of it.

In theory, it should not, but if you do return due to an issue, having opened up the laptop means they will be wary of giving a straight repair. Make sure you open up carefully and do not do any alterations other than SSD. I would just buy the highest storage?RAM you need and use an external drive.

Thanks for the informative video. Do you think the 17" is small enough to use comfortably on your lap instead of a desk or table?
@guidho

Hi! I own a XPS 17 9700. Love the laptop and you can certainly use it on your lap, but it isn't all that comfortable when you want to use it for a long time and it's sitting on your lap. It is kinda heavy for that. I am 1.90 metres tall. It is a great laptop, but I would always use it on a desk or table. It is not one that you pull out when your in the train or something. It is exactly the same size of most older 15" laptops (at least the ones we had around here in the home back in the day). Hope this helps! :-)

I'm torn....as I have the Dell XPS 15' [9560]...its suffered some sort of internal damages, as I came back into my office in the den after making coffee to find wispy white tendrils of smoke coming from the rear, after rushing to disconnect that power cord from the device, tried powering it back on but nothing. took the bottom plate off and there are burn marks on the interio, now...I have this thing maxed out with a 2TB SSD 32GB of RAM and that awesome i7....I don't think I wanna "move up" to the more recent models as I believe this model I have is the last one to include the Ethernet jack. But I dunno where to send it for repairs...any advice from the community would be greatly appreciated!!

I’ve always been an HP fan but seriously fed up with all these PC makers buying the same main board from the Chinese manufacturers and just repackaging it. Also, why, why, why do laptop makers copy the Apple-tard keyboard with no f***ing numpad on a 17” machine FFS!

Looking At your Spec Screen: Not Great. Not Enough RAM, half the size SD Drive you really need, no separate GPU. That makes it not great for graphics creators, gamers or high end engineering. Speakers, from your clip, may be large and better placed than many machines, sound like they have a poor base range. I also saw no HDMI or other Video OUT for attaching it to a separate Video Out. Sorry but no. Insufficient bang for the buck to say the least. Plenty of better machines out there.

Don't buy this machine Dell has serious quality control defects on xps 17 and people spend months going through their service run around trying to resolve it only to have their new computers gutted and replaced with refurbished parts. The machine is great but...... There are factory defects many customers have had that make it an expensive lemon and their warranty service nightmare leave people hanging for months by fixing it but not actually fixing the issue. Mother board replacements are common even on machines 1 2 3 months old and they replace it with refurbished parts. Nobody buys a 2000 3000 4000 dollar computer to have a refurbished motherboard installed a few months after purchase.

I love your reviews, mate, and your reviews in general, too, but please do not make it seem like color gamut directly equates to more color accuracy. The two are not the same thing, I can easily combine a spectacular color gamut with wildly inaccurate colors (in fact that is rather often the case with uncalibrated gaming screens when watching sRGB-mastered content). This is often miscommunicated on RU-vid and I'd like my favorite channels to not make this mistake, please :D Another thing: I hope I did not miss it, but does this still come with the "power feature" of the original model, in where the battery is tapped into under full load, because the PSU does not offer sufficient power?

I have seen this on Dell's website. I do love this one, and the hardware choices are really great (compared to most which usually gives you maybe 12-16 GB of Ram). Looking at it, a large Touch Pad, speakers on the sides, and 4 USB C/Thunderbolt 4 ports, so much like the MacBook Pro. I do wish you could choose the Artic White Color. Dell has a Dexktop Tower XPS, that gives you more choices, like a Blu-Ray reader/ writer. That Dell Laptop definitely is a big upgrade from my HP, where the GPU, Ram, Video Ram and SSD storage wise, except, I do have an HDMI, and a cd/rom drive, 3 USB-A's and a USB-C. I do have USB A devices. I am still planning to upgrade to the larger Silicon I-Mac. I love the Mac OS. As laptops, I would still go with the 16 inch MacBook Pro over any PC laptop. I already have a PC laptop, and it does have an 8th Gen processor and the TMP 2.0. It should be able to run Windows 11 when that becomes available to the Public. I plan to have a Mac and I will keep the HP for Windows. That way, I will have both OS's, and I have the I-Pad Pro 12.9 XDR, with the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil. I saw you have one two in the beginning of your video. Nice Cat, at the end of the video.
