Dell XPS 17 Review 

Love how I just saw reviews of this on many channels, including super popular ones...but as long as I haven't watched Lisa's review, I don't want to believe the hype! Trust is not something you can buy, it's something Lisa built along the years! Thank you!

Thank you. I was looking forward to this review. Big fan of 17 inchers and happy to see they are finally making a comeback. Especially the XPS.

I just finally got mine, and I love it by now! I got 8 Cores, RTX 2060, 64GB RAM, 4TB SSD, 4K Display! (Some of these upgraded by myself of course lol) costed me around 4500$ for all! I’ll be using it for photography a lot, and also some video! No issues with trackpad or anything by now! Cheers from Japan!

Great review by Lisa. The best part of reviews by Lisa is she shows up the internals of the laptop and it gives us a clear picture which parts are expandable/replaceable and which are not.

Thanks Lisa. I have this laptop and love it for the most part. I found though that it would kill battery in sleep mode, and the fan noise is insanely irritating. I found a RU-vid video from someone who solved those problems on an XPS 13, and what he suggested works. It involved changing two settings in BIOS, and running Dell Power Manager app.

Your reviews are really good. You should include webcam comparisons in all the laptops you review. Web cam video quality is an area where all laptop makers really need to improve on with more people working at home. Having a small bezel is ok for having the camera up top or don't bother including it at all if its a nose camera. Also, not including one USB A is a mistake by Dell.

Specs just flashed on the screen so I had to rewind and pause. You may want to trade a little screen time so you can display these types of info a little longer.

Was the audio quiet or is it something on my end. Had it turned all the way up and was only getting you at soft - medium level volume compared to normal volume with youtube

Lisa, do we know if it's possible to buy a power supply that's bigger than 130 Watts (from Dell or 3rd party) that would work on this laptop without wrecking the battery/internals and still work through USB-C? The reason I ask is not for gaming, but for heavy GIS and Remote Sensing work involving a lot of GPU and CPU power. Would be using this laptop mainly because it's transportability for work/university, and an upgrade from my current XPS 15 L521x laptop

I just finished shipping one off to a user. 4K, 32 gig, 1 TB SSD. Quite fast, trackpad did NOT have the little play issue. Very nice performance, but it better be at 3k.

hello, i am trying to find the right laptop for a long time.. no gaming, no video editing, no autocad or render work.. i will only use laptop for financial trading stock programs that need high CPU, SSD and ram. and laptop will be used from 09:00 am to 11 pm // all day nearly of course not will battery, always plugded in. i read some coil whine problems abaout this model.. can you advice this model for me ? heating /cooling issued and stable performance? thank you

Hey Lisa, couple of display questions: 1. In Dell Premier Color, is the sRGB (or Rec 709) mode accurate to the sRGB color gamut - and does it cause banding? (it does on my 9500) 2. How does the Anti-reflective coating compare to Apple Macbook Pros (the best as far as I know?) Thanks!

I got one and within an hour, black horizontal lines started appearing on the screen which multiplied so I sent it back.

I have the same one, put majaro kde plasma linux on it. Worked perfectly out of the box (some bios changes had to made(. Battery life was 9hrs on average, Not heat (60-70C) or fan noise. The battery is exchangeable! UZp to 64 GB ram and 2 TB storage. Loving it.

Matthew Moniz in his battery test comparison, the MBP 16 gives 09:30, while the XPS 17 gave 14:00 hours. His unit had a FHD screen not a 4k though. So i believe you should mention that too, Thank you Lisa.

Ahhh another amazing video Lisa! Was wondering what your thoughts were on Dell’s Precision line up of laptops? They’re basically in the same chassis but I heard they are more powerful and have better QC?

I love my XPS 17, but I feel the touch pad could be a bit smaller. Who needs that big? I often accidentally touches the edge of the pad with my palm when I'm typing.

Need a review on the eluktronics line of laptops

I just ordered it a few days ago. The thing is a couple of months ago when it became available I could have sworn you could configure it with a NON-TOUCH 4k screen. (Am I wrong???) Now the only way to get 4K is with the Touch screen so I ordered that I mean its not that big of a deal because i just won't use the touch. Also, I am fairly certain there is a way to disable the Touch.

How did they do a 17” laptop without a number pad??? To get that you have to go to the Precision Work Station and spend an extra $1,000 for things most of us don’t need. I would have bought this right when it first came out.

I love my 15 and really wanted the new 17 until I realised there's no number keypad.

So my question is regarding the second hard drive slot. It has a cover that said PCIE + SSD and so I’m a little confused, is it a SATA or a PCIe (NVMe) slot or does that second slot allow you to use either type of M.2 hard drive?

Great, I was just streaming a show on the XPS 9700 and it went to Black screen with the round Dell Logo! Now it will not boot and was extremely hot. My guess is it overheated but now it will not boot, the screen stays and the fans are on. Been an hour and nothing!

I have one of these on the way, and I'm so happy to see my absolute favorite reviewer reviewing it!!! It was a choice between this and the Zenbook Pro Duo, and I chose this because it uses a newer generation processor, has room to upgrade, and has that cool (pun intended) vapor chamber ... I do mostly Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premier & After Effects, and I would have loved to be able to use an active pen, since I very often do, but I thought it was a worthwhile trade off for the reasons I listed above. My plan is to use Duet Pro and / or Easycanvas Pro to use my Ipad Pro (which is my primary illustration machine) as a pen display when I need to, and hopefully both those apps perform better than they do on my current machine, a Thinkpad 14 (I would be thrilled to see you review those two applications, hint hint). So ... did I choose well? I would LOVE your opinion! Thanks for all the GREAT content; you're the BEST!

8:20 This is the biggest difference between a proper thin and light notebook and a heavier duty gaming or productivity machine. The Razer blade 17 with the same CPU and GPU ships with a 235W charger and the system comes pretty close to maxing that out under sustained load. The cooling and power delivery in an XPS 17 or MacBook Pro 16 are just not designed for hours and hours of work hitting both the CPU and GPU hard. They are great for shorter workloads and of course the large, portable display is fantastic.

How does this run Linux? Well?

I have the $3000 XPS 17, and I use it for 4k 60 video editing.

Is there an alternative to this that keeps the gorgeous 4K screen and tiny form factor but loses the high-end CPU and gaming GPU, and therefore a good chunk of the price? I have to believe there is a market for this machine but pared down for those whose use-case is browsing, productivity and video watching.

Lovely review, XPS 17 is a real beefy laptop. Price is a bit on the high side unfortunately, but it could be worth it to the right person. I'm sticking with Intel based laptops for the moment because of Thunderbolt 3 ports. The ability to add in an EGPU/ability to be docked is very important to me. The ROG Zephyrus G14 is one incredible hunk of hardware for the price... But I want something that doesn't look like a gaming laptop and something that has matching accessories to go with it. I bought a Dell Vostro 7590 with an i7-9750H/GTX 1650/512GB SSD/1x16GB RAM for $1150. It's extremely capable at gaming, and I have purchased a WD19TB docking station to go with it. I also plan to get a Dell Power Companion 18,000 mAh power bank to charge it on the go. This... Would provide for an extremely competent workhorse :)

For me, the 9700 and 9500 are hard to open. I mean hold it down and find a spot to pry open the lid hard to open! We had the 9500 for my son and he could not open it.

I wanted this laptop but opted for the new lg ultra 17. Got a great deal on it. The only downside to the dell are the usb c ports. Sucks these companies have to go that route.
