Dell XPS 17 review: Leaving the MacBook Pro 16 in the dust

If you told me you were buying a 17-inch laptop in 2020, I’d call you crazy. There are only a handful of 17-inch laptops available, and with how good 15-inch laptops are, they’re hardly worth your time.
That is, unless you’re talking about the new Dell XPS 17. Unlike most 17-inchers, the XPS 17 is more than just a big screen. It adds performance. Serious performance. The kind even the XPS 15 can’t offer.
I expect a lot out of a laptop that costs nearly $3,000, but with the Nvidia RTX 2060 under the hood and an expansive 17-inch screen, this might be the ultimate content creation workstation. Find out more in my Dell XPS 17 hands on review.

I don't understand why 5lbs is spoken about like it's a metric ton. It’s 1 or 2lbs more than your standard laptop. Surely it’s not a Herculean task to walk around with.

..... It really does seem to be the case, Wilson and especially for a lot of emaciated digital nomads, spending most of their lifes creating unboxing videos, or sitting in the corners of cafe houses, always looking for power points to keep their rapidly draining laptops charged during those multi-hour gastronomical sessions, when not travelling the world in currently grounded aircraft. I occasionally suggest a few sheets of paper and a small IKEA pencil as alternatives for these muscle deprived individuals, who order their beverages pre-sweetened, as even the task of adding sugar cubes seems to be an arduous, muscle straining task. And as for MacBooks "still not having" SD card slots. A bit of research will reveal that even other, so called legacy ports, where once part of the MacBook range, before Apple outlined the collective future with all of these ports now apparently being obsolete. So everyone, and finally digest that message, throw away all of your USB-A drives, mice and whatever else was powered by this ancient technology, visit your nearest Apple store and ask for the 'dongle section' credit card or proof of AfterPay membership at hand 😉

It does feel different though - that one extra lb seems to cross the threshold of ultraportability. I have the new xps 15 and it just feels a tad heavy to lug around like you would a 13 inch. Great built quality though and the bezel-less display is gorgeous

It's one of those thing where you get used to light weight 2-3 lbs ultrabook then dread on the extra 1-2 pound increase with larger size. I used my 13 for 4 years and going back to 15 laptop feel different but not that substantial to me.

I purchased an XPS17 w/ an I7, 64 GB and 1 TB. After 2 weeks, I returned it for a refund. Dell has acknowledged that under heavy load it still consumes battery while plugged in. They claim this was by design and no fix is coming, but that's ridiculous.... when a laptop is plugged in, it should charge... period, no exceptions. Additionally, mine had other charging problems... once unplugged, it would not resume charging without a complete reboot. Some additional intermittent issues with external display (Thunderbolt, and a Dell display too) no detecting. All of that was handled with Dell's standard support (deny and deflect and once they acknowledge an issue, require the buyer to jump through hoops). The specs are spectacular and the physical build quality is as good as prior XPS devices, which is to say, the only Windows device on-par with a MacBook. Too bad they released it with the power shortcoming. Also too bad it comes w/ Dell support... I could not recommend this laptop to anyone.

Damn dude that sucks. I'm having no issues with my 32 GB 8 core version. I'm running 3 live trading platforms , while streaming media on multi ultra-wide displays. I'm constantly unplugging and plugging back into my dell d6000 docking station. I used to see situations like this when I was a corporate cellphone store manager. Sometimes Apple/Samsung (whoever) just have bad units. I opted out of the 4k display since 8k is already breathing down our necks, and the battery life payoff is outstanding! It is still one of the most amazing displays ever! This also took the cost of my unit down to the $2600 range. Also 500 nits is extremely bright. This machine is on another level.

A trick to save +$800 that not many know is getting the Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10875H - 8 cores, NVIDIA(R) GeForce RTX(TM) 2060 6GB GDDR6 with Max-Q, 32 GB Ram, 1Tb Drive and FHD+ Display for only $2,100.00! if you look for the business laptops instead of "for home" in the Dell Website. Great great laptop except for the ongoing quality issues (trackpad, coil whine) and crazy battery drain when gaming. Simply 130W power supply is the worst design decision with this fantastic product resulting in early battery degradation.
@AMGF815
@AMGF815 4 года назад
Dude! What coil whine? I have no coil whine and have not heard of anyone having any on the new XPS models (9500/9700). The track pad issue has been addressed by Dell who admitted to the issue and confirmed all forward shipping units would have the issue fixed and previous units can be fixed under warranty or returned. As for gaming off charger - that’s the case with most laptops - even with actual gaming laptops.
@tag414
@tag414 4 года назад
@@AMGF815 I don't have the coil whine on my 9700 but it has popped up for some people (search Reddit). As for losing battery while gaming, that's certainly NOT the case with most gaming laptops. However most gaming laptops come with much bigger power bricks, so that's the trade off. This is a creation machine that can game, but is not made to game. It's made for short bursts of heavy load which the charger can handle. Sustained heavy loads like in gaming are just too much for the 130w charger. Now, if Dell would update the BIOS to allow undervolting we could probably solve that...here's hoping.

@@JohnDoe-we4nb Hi John... we offer two battery capacities for the XPS 17. A 56Whr battery that is only coupled with the FHD+ resolution. The 97Whr battery can be had on the FHD+ and is the only option on the UHD+ configurations. The XPS 15 employs a 56Whr and an 86Whr battery.

@dono700
@dono700 4 года назад
Hi Wayne - If you're just looking for a larger screen, the LG Gram is a solid choice. The XPS 17 is designed for heavy workloads with Intel's "H" processors and NVIDIA's RTS2060 discrete graphics (90W design) whereas the LG Gram is a "U-based" architecture with integrated graphics (15W design). It's a slim and light product, but it wouldn't win a "fist fight" with the XPS 17.

From what I've read there's not going to be very much of a difference going with the i9 over the currently available 8 core i7 10875h. I wish they tested the base or mid-range XPS 17 as most of us cannot afford the high-spec versions. I certainly would expect a £3000 to perform as well as the XPS 17 does. I assume you do not get any throttling on battery? No OLED or QLED is a bit disappointing. The battery life seems a bit low even on the 1080p model, I thought Intel was aiming for 10h plus as its new mantra? Also, I would have liked to see a different casing, maybe a white version, I am not keen on the material used on the keyboard (rests). Seems that OEMs are moving away from num pads on 17-inch, which is a shame, though by reducing the footprint it is understandable. All nick picky but seems a great device and a clever choice as the 15-inch is now just a bit too cramped.

The biggest plus for the Dell machine over something like a MacBook Pro 16 is the Dell service packages. For only a couple of hundred more on the price you can get on site next day service which is a no brainer for a pro machine that you rely on to make money. In comparison Apple is hopeless often taking days to return a machine that you have to physically take to an Apple repair centre. Also you get 2 SSD slots unlike the mac with its soldered in SSD that is usually wiped after a visit to the repair centre and cannot be upgraded.

I bought an XPS 17. I went for the creator's edition base model from the Home products side of the Dell website. It still cost me 3200 Canadian dollars. I got a better fit for my environment (I'm all Dell for new laptops) I wanted the 17" screen and a mid-level graphics card for basic video editing. It's interesting that the XPS 17 on the business side are higher-end models that are above on the home side. But I can't justify $CDN5000 for a laptop I am not using to earn money with. Don't forget to engage Dell chat when you are purchasing you can often get extended three-year warranties for a discount or free depending on who you end up talking to.

Public service announcement - I've dealt with Alienware, but from many forums, I think all Dells are the same - they load up so many "agents" and processes, you will always have a lot of load until you clean that out. And the cooling solutions are always advertised as being so good, yet I struggled for a long time with the very poor heat sink of the Alienware. One laptop that has surprised me greatly is the Asus StudioBook - the fans NEVER turn above a low speed, even when maxing out the CPU! One of the only other options with a full sized, real 17" screen (16:10). Also has plenty of ports. And almost no bloatware except a McAfee Web Advisor preinstalled.

@@NewOrleansSeptember Thanks David... there are always going to be negative reviews. That's simply a reality for all products and when customers have a bad experience, we welcome that feedback. What I can assure you is this - we stand behind our products and our warranty is there for our customer's peace of mind. and still 10th gen Intels are pretty bad, not even to mention the Nvidia GPU options.... Sure they have awesome battery runtime for its aviable performance, but in the end the prices are pretty high for such a "small" beast if we can call them a beast at all. Even my 2080 Max-P with 150W TDP is some sort of "too slow" for me. I got for nearly half the price of a fully upgraded 17" XPS a little bit bigger HP Omen 17, but with RTX 2080 Max-P and Gsync 144Hz screen, the actual Omen 17 got already 240Hz screens for again a very fair price. Their cooling solutions are also pretty decent, and they are pretty small compared to other 2080 (150W+) notebooks. The only big disadvantages of them are poor battery runtime and in overall a pretty fragile design, but i dont have much experience with typical notebooks and am mainly used to very robust MacBook Pro cases. Since i mainly use it as "Desktop" on the TV and to be portable and sometimes on the internal screen, this "cheap" HP Omen is perfect for me and i dont care about battery usage at all, doesnt perform well anyways on battery and however every game is capped at 30 fps on battery.

Hi, I’ve been checking on Dell’s issue with DPC latency. It has been awful in past models. There are many....many musicians waiting to find just one review re how many tracks the new Dells will be able to run without clicks and pops. When this subject is touched upon (and its v rare!) is a quick shot of a single track usually in a video context. This is totally useless for a musician working with VST instruments in a music DAW. It appears no one has a cheap (or even free) piece of music recording software...(Cubasis..Logic..Ableton.) a basic audio interface with which to test systems out. I’m absolutely positive there are hundreds....(thousands really) of musicians searching the web for just one solid report on how Dell’s new laptops function re real time latency within a music DAW! There is one review that mentions this on you tube...BUT running one track is’t the problem.....if he had simply copied and pasted that track 10/30 times and then showed that it works....his viewing figures and Dell’s would soar! Nick H y’all are tripping. No there’s not a huge difference but there is a difference. Quality wise, the 4K panel is better in color and res but not enough to justify the cost. The FHD panel is well calibrated and is actually brighter. Not to mention the igpu can barely handle the resolution. Let’s not even mention window scaling. How do I know? I had the 4K model. People are getting 9-12 hours on the fhd while I’m getting 6 hours doing nothing but light task and RU-vid. If y’all want some empirical numbers, the pixel density on the 17 16:10 is 133ppi vs 15.6 16:9 139ppi. You’re not gonna see pixel unless u slam ur face on the screen. For perspective a 1440p 27” monitor have 108ppi and a 4K 27” is 166ppi. I can say both monitor look just as sharp as the other. The HDR on the 4K panel is useless for standard use and due to the week igpu it’ll lag due to high respond time. And the brightness is not enough for a major different vs sdr. I actually prefer SDR on the panel because it retain small detail with the same 550 nits that hdr would wash it out. Only professional going to be able to use that panel to the extend it design for. For ur average person, the different is minimal at best the only thing different u going to see is resolution if u have eagle eyes. I think Mac book pro resolution is a good compromise between best of both world.
