You can tune, modify & hack your burr coffee grinder Delonghi KG79 or KG89 for finer grinding. You can modify your burr coffee grinder to grind your coffee beans for espresso.
Recommended Delonghi Grinders on Amazon:
Delonghi KG79: amzn.to/2ZB9AOh
Delonghi KG89: amzn.to/2rKzv9S
Delonghi Grinders (All Models):
Canada: amzn.to/36Yx7ep
Italy: amzn.to/2tKAkQJ
France: amzn.to/2So3VJE
Deutschland: amzn.to/34JUcQI
Espana: amzn.to/393RfxG
This is a real-time video showing how to tune, modify & hack your burr coffee grinder Delonghi KG79 or Delonghi KG89 or any other burr coffee grinder with similar system. You can do it (with your own risk) while watching this video.
The trick is to open the burr coffee grinder, modify it's "finest grinding point" & make it grind at it's maximum capacity.
It works on Delonghi KG79 & Delonghi KG89 well. It may work on other burr coffee grinders with similar systems. But these burr coffee grinders are ideal to hack.
Note that; there are important warnings in the video.
Enjoy your rich flavoured coffee!

I know this video is a little old, but it improved my pull times like nothing else. Got a new machine and thought something was very wrong, since I was getting 40g through in under ten seconds - but thanks to this video, a bottomless portafilter, and a little patience, it's slowed down to half a minute - and the flavours are amazing. Thank you very much for the one stupidly simple trick that made a world of difference!

Just did this mod. I exactly followed the guide. The grind is finer. I don't know how much more fine I can get it but the espresso is much much better already. The crema is thicker and nicer to taste. More water comes through the tamped double shot filter basket so I get closer to the 2oz/60grams of espresso. Thanks so much! 5 star review!

Thanks so much for this video. I'm just getting into making proper espresso at home and bought this as a starter. I altered mine by five clicks and ran it, found the burrs were touching on that setting but found the noise would stop once I'd moved it one click back. Re-altered the cog and now it's perfect! Oh and I also cleaned up the insides of the machine. In the high humidity here the rubberized coating on both knobs tends to get sticky and attracts dust. This mod worked well for me but I had to adjust the grind less than the suggested 90 degrees in the video. So be careful, test and adjust. That's easy to do as you can hear when the grinding rings touch as you turn the dial from course to fine. This completes my 50 euro espresso set up that makes good enough espresso ... James Hoffmann, try and beat that! (he's awesome BTW, no disrespect meant).
@nhs.14
@nhs.14 Год назад
How does it sound when it touch each other? My dose was 15 gram dark roast at finest setting after mod yet it still way to fast on unpressurized basket (30g at only 10-15 s from first drip on delonghi dedica 51mm)
@RJ-vf7eg
@RJ-vf7eg Год назад
@@nhs.14 it sounds like metal grinding on metal. It's a lower pitch sound like rocks in a washing machine might sound. The usual sound seems higher pitch and the grinder sounds like it is spinning faster. I hope that helps? I also found l has to tamp very hard. To slow extraction you can turn the steam wand dial a little to release some steam/water. You can practice this with just water and no coffee. You will need to put a container under the steam wand to catch the water.

Just did this but decided just to do 4 clicks. 34g liquid from 17g coffee was taking 15 secs to pull on previous finest grind. Now takes 27 secs and taste is on a different planet. Hi Ralph, at what grind setting are you at? i did only 4 clicks as well but the video seems to have done 6 clicks. I have trouble listening for the burr grinding sound since the whole grinder is vibrating loudly so i am somewhere between medium and fine.

@@JC-sy8fh when I adjusted by 4 clicks I was then using the finest setting. This seemed to work ok for a while but then I had to do re-adjust to grind finer. You can also remove the step clicker bit when you do this. I also recommend taking out the screws from the burrs and using a strong epoxy glue to reattach, this will mean that when the burrs are worn out you won't be able to easily replace them but it will give you a more consistent grind and allow you to achieve a smaller grind gap.

Gringing light roasts as fine as the mod will allow needs a lot of torque. Only guessing but I bet Delonghi used a motor not really rated for this and as such this mod will make the grinder burn out faster than without. Otherwise they could sell this with the mod for twice the price.

Hello thanks for this video! I did this hack on my KG79 and I was wondering, after this mod what is the level I should use for a finer coffee? If I use the top FINE option, my machine does not extract any coffee and it starts to work close to MEDIUM option. Can you make a video or send a picture with the FINE LEVEL after the mod?
@4ErMedia
@4ErMedia 4 года назад
Hi' You're welcome :) It is explained at the end of our video. You turn the grinder on with no coffee beans in it. Listen to the sound. Click one by one to the finer. When you hear the touching sound, turn one click to the opposite side & make sure that the parts are not touching each other. That is your finest setting & never go finer than this. Cheers!

Can you tell me if that’s gonna affect the other settings? Lie the coarsed and the medium? Since we’ve changed the teeth.. What happens afterwards?
@4ErMedia
@4ErMedia 5 лет назад
Yes. The knob will be pointing somewhere between middle and finest, when tuned to finest. The max. coarsed setting will grind finer than before. So after applying this, you will loose some of the max coarsed grinding mode.

Is it possible to do a part 2 video for the clean sound /setting instructions. I was following you up until turning on the machine and click one setting until clean sound.
@4ErMedia
@4ErMedia 5 лет назад
It is very easy. Just make sure that there is no coffee beans in the grinder. It should be empty. Then, when you turn the knob 180 degrees (to the opposite side of "fine"), you will hear the clean sound. One by one, turn it to the "finer grinding" direction. At one point, the sound will change. Then, move it one click far from that point & hear the clean sound again. That's the finest grinding point. We hope this helps.

Hi, I have recently purchased this model and I modified it exactly as you perfectly shown in this video , at the moment I received it . Right now it`s mostly suitable for Turkish coffee , but I wanna use for homely Espresso machine. The question is :What if I find my suitable adjustment in some degree between 0 ~90 by try & error? Does this made any side effects and problem for the Grinder machine or uniformity of the result coffee?Thanx in advance
@4ErMedia
@4ErMedia 5 лет назад
Hi Alireza! There is no problem for the coarser side. But for the fine side, first you should empty the coffee beans and then be sure there is no touching between the grinding parts. Find the finest point & never turn the knob further. That's it :)

Planning on doing this tomorrow with my KG79. I always grind my French press coffee on the 12th grind setting, how would this be affected after doing this mod? (Assuming I follow exactly and rotate 90⁰ ) If I only rotated the wheel 4 spaces, would the new 16th increment be equivalent to the old 12th increment?
@4ErMedia
@4ErMedia 3 года назад
Not exactly. You should try and find the equivalent setting again.
@widyasari4513

I am sorry for being confused of your last minute of explanation. Turn the grind knob to the middle position (from the finest position after reassembling) and then turn the machine on, sound should be "clean" and move knob until friction sound heard, then move the knob a click away until the sound clean again. Then that should be the finest setting possibe. Now, does that mean, the real finest grind position not necessarily on exactly the finest marking on the grinder's body? The real finest grind setting knob should be now still on the position before reassamble, right?
@4ErMedia
@4ErMedia 3 года назад
After the modification, the finest setting on the body shouldn't be used. The "clean sound" position will be the new "finest".

@4ErMedia
@4ErMedia 4 года назад

@zonys
@zonys 4 года назад
You probably have to "choke" the machine first with a very fine grinding.. and then increase the grinding until the water starts flowing back slow enough to get the 30g of espresso in 23~28 seconds (depends on your taste). I managed to do this with a hand grinder (copy of hario skerton), but I can only do it with 12g of coffee (I prefer a 1:3 ratio) because for 14 or 18 grams the next setting in the hand grinder is too coarse and the water flows too fast (I need to modify that one too). I have a KG89 which I moded I while a go, but I only turned the little wheel 5 "teeth" I believe (I watched another video), which is really not enough for unpressurized portafilter. I was scared of what would happen If I went beyond that, but I might try again thanks to this video.
@JC-sy8fh

@@zonys hi did your try turning the teeth some more? What grind setting are you at? I did 4 clicks adjustment and at finest setting, not fine enough for bottomless portafilter.
@zonys
@zonys 3 года назад
@@JC-sy8fh Hi! I modified mine in two ways. First, by this method, and then by modifying that top part of the grinder that you can take out without having to open the machine (that long three legged thing inside the chamber with the coffee beans that you can turn, unlock and take out). Unfortunately I couldn't find the video. It was in German I think. Basically, you take that part out, and bellow where that teethed metal burr is, you can see that there are 3 screws (each corresponds to one of the three legs it has). You unscrew them... and the metal thing will detach.. What I did was cut 3 rings of acetate sheets that would fit below that metal part that just came out... you have to make the holes for the screws to go through too.. (it is quite a detailed job) What this does is to make that burr metal part lower than the screws. The problem was that no matter how much you adjust the dial, the screws will always touch first (the gap is almost imperceptible but it is there). After this I could turn the dial two more times until I could hear them touch when grinding (the sound when they touch is very distinct, no a very good one!). I put the beans inside, and well... I turned it once more after a few trials (3 extra more after this hack). And I've been using it like that since a year or more (two cups of coffee a day). It's a bit difficult to explain it in text. If you have any doubts, ask me again. I'll try to look for that video.

I don't understand if the finest level will damage the grinding parts. I don't want them to touch each other, even at the finest level. Maybe if we move 45° the wheel instead of 90° when disassembling the KG89? PS: I only moved 45°, 4 or 5 clicks. My espresso was ready in 25'' tamping gently, instead of 14'' tamping really hard.
