I worry I was a bit harsh on the Hario grinder in this, as it got a lot of us started in our journey of coffee at home. I certainly don't regret selling them. I'm just excited to see changes happening at the lower end of the market.

I've been using a KINGrinder K2 for the last 4 months. I love the quality and the grind variability. After looking through CoffeeRU-vid, I was almost convinced that I would never be able to make good drinks at home for less than thousands of dollars. After watching many hours of coffee RU-vid and understanding what was important about dialing in, I would go to my local favorite cafe and order a flat white once a week and come home and make myself 3-4 more drinks to try and replicate their drink. I would say that after 2 weeks, I got the espresso right and that the milk frothing took me three weeks to get right. And now, armed with a KINGrinder K2, De'Longhi Stilosa EC260BK and a few budget accessories (tamper, distribution tool and good cups) I can make espresso drinks that are comparable to all the best shops in Dallas, TX and even impress my barista friends that work with big money industrial machines. I can make beautiful and delicious espresso drinks at home with a total spend of near $200. The KINGrinder K2 was the key to unlock my home scientist process to replicate the drinks from local cafes within about 5 grind attempts.

I just want to share some of my experience here: I'm a barista from Brazil, and here our wages start around R$2K a month (which translates to USD 390, EU 360 and BP 310)... so not a lot of money to buy coffee accessories from other countries. White label Chinese grinders (very similar to this one or Timemore products) have been good for a while, and specialty grade national coffee is quite accessible making the best result for something that an average Brazilian can enjoy.

@FlameRat_YehLon
@FlameRat_YehLon 14 дней назад
My guess is the biggest difference would be the speed it grinds, and otherwise, it's entry level with similar design so I doubt it would make any taste-able differences.
@FlameRat_YehLon
@FlameRat_YehLon 14 дней назад
@@nyatalia P series has metal skeleton to ensure precision so I don't think K series can do much better, K0/K1 in the current state is probably just more durable and look nicer, rather than grind better. Other than that, I think the difference between P and K would be similar to grinding with more constant or more varying speed, as the skeleton might wobble more in a plastic shell than in metal shell.
@nyatalia
@nyatalia 14 дней назад
@@FlameRat_YehLon Even compared to a metal skeleton, the aluminum shell rigidity might increase general rigidity. We're talking deflection on the micron scale, so I definitely think it could have some effect.

James, i think it is time to revisit the current state of hand grinder. Timemore has done so much since the last time you reviewed hand grinder and provided us many customers with cheaper choices for fine espresso grind (still use Timemore Chestnut C3 Nano & agree that it is arduous & painful task to grind as fine as Turkish Coffee kind of fine, but they have been quite enjoyable for manual espresso maker - no need to be too fine, just salt-like). Also, as an owner of Hario MSS-1DTB Slim grinder, I don't use it anymore since i got Cafec Tsubame TM-18 Mill, done much better results for a ceramic burr and it has been my favourite for pour over ever since.

The home barista community definitely needs these kind of videos. Just read any reddit discussion around coffee equipment and you see how captured everybody has been by the industry. People believe that you need to spend 1000+ for an espresso setup, which is not a very inclusive mindset. Its actually a very consumerist and destructive view. You can even make great espresso with your old nescafe machine, with an handgrinder like this and a reusable stainless steel capsule.

I might add a second hand flair for good espresso on the cheap, but really to anyone with any passing interest in coffee I immediately recommend an aeropress. I use a stainless filter on mine and 6-10 min immersion extractions, for the flavor I like, but it's so versatile, easy to use, easy to clean, and it limits how much nice coffee you go through by not having half litre cups..

It gets through the beans more than twice as fast, and crank more smoothly, with less force. The only downside I've hit so far is that it's more than twice the heft. One of the major points of a hand grinder is to be something I can throw in my luggage for travel. More-than-doubling the weight matters. For now, that's all I've noticed so far.

This video is a demonstration of two things: 1) investment aside, if a group has interest in developing an idea, it will be slowly optimized to cost either the same for higher quality, or cost less for the same result; 2) law of diminishing returns, as is true to many products, means that paying X times more does NOT mean 3 times better performance. @fragmentalstew
@fragmentalstew 15 дней назад
A couple notes. The KINGrinder grinders usually come with an additional gasket that can be swapped out that allows the lid to be used with a drill. At least, the k lineup does; I'm not sure about the p lineup. Also, the k0 and p0 burrs are copies of the Timemore C2 burr. The other burrs in their lineup may be copies of other popular hand grinders also. The p0 has the same burrs as k0, and p1 the same as k1. p2 has a new burr that's like a mini version of the k6 / k5. The p and k lines are otherwise the same, afaik, except p is plastic, k is aluminum, k has a bigger catch cup and and 40 clicks per rotation compared to p's 30 clicks. Edit: I said the p2 burr was the same as the k2 and that's entirely false, so I fixed that, above.

Your bit on the P2 is absolutely wrong. The K2 is a Hexagonal (6-blade) burr. The P2 is a Heptagonal (7-blade) burr, more like a miniature K6. Outside the line, it’s more comparable to the 1zPresso Q Air, which makes it an insanely more interesting grinder. The K2, K3, & K4 all share the same burr shape. The K2’s burr is uncoated while the K3/K4 are coated. The K4 has external adjustment while the K3’s is internal. Kingrinder’s naming scheme is just stupid. It’s only good for keeping track of which models are the upsell. Don’t rely on their nomenclature to tell you what they’re supposed to compare to.

When you are coming from pre-ground coffee or blade grinders, almost any hand grinder is a noticable progress. Six month ago I walked by a Tschibo shop (biggest specialised coffee retailer in Germany) and noticed that their hand grinder was on a special offer; 14.95€ from 29.95€. I had watched some of James' vids here and toyed with the thought of buying a grinder anyway, so I went in and got one. It has a ceramic burr and I did not expect much, but have to say that thing changed my coffee experience drastically. Suddenly I could experiment with different settings and taste the effects they had on the output myself.

I know why you chose the P model, however that said if you were to pit the K6 against the likes of Comandante C40 and 1Zpresso K Ultra series I’m certain you would be shocked even more . I just posted similarly. I think the K6 is on par with some of the much more expensive models and especially when you compare actual cups of coffee I think he would really struggle to find distinct differences. $30->$100 is a lot more negotiable on a budget than $30->$287 to me. You even get external adjustment and probably a better espresso cup at that point.

I have a Kingrinder K6 (their higher end grinder) and I absolutely love it. I use it for both espresso in my Flair Classic, and for pour overs in a V60 and I love the coffee I get from both of them. It has about 240 steps (according to the Kingrinder literature each step is a 16 micron adjustment), but I’ve never really gone coarser than 70-80. I feel like there’s about 10 steps between 40-50 that are usable for espresso.

Agreed, the K6 is incredible. For espresso, mine chokes my Bambino at 42 or 43 clicks from zero on most beans, so I usually start at 45. For pourover I've gone as high as 105 in a Kalita Wave, but the 65-90 range does well most of the time in V60 and other conical ones.

I don't think it d be simple to pick apart in a blind test among the very high end hand grinders, and I got it around 100E in a big sale. Built like a tank, can adjust grind size using the dial on top instead of fiddling with the bottom dial covered in ground like with the P1 or the C40. Overall, unbeatable value.
