Delta, American, and United CRJ200 Regional Jet Comparison

As a frequent flyer, there’s one question I’ve struggled with when it comes to regional flying: Who has the worst CRJ200?
Is it Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, or United Airlines? Each of these airlines rely on CRJ200s Regional Jets to make short, thin routes profitable. And, on that account, the CRJ200 Regional Jet seems to work. By virtually any other measure, though, the CRJ200 is terrible, making Delta, American, and United experiences less pleasant.
Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, and United Airlines all operate CRJ200 Regional Jet aircraft through their regional partners (Delta Connection, American Eagle, and United Express).
Over the last couple of months, I’ve traveled onboard CRJ200s belonging to each airline. Spoiler Alert: It was TERRIBLE! In this video, I’ll share my experiences on each airline so that you can decide which one you think is the worst.
Was it the:
Delta CRJ200
American CRJ200
United CRJ200 (United CL65)
I’ve also included some interesting facts about the history and current status of the CRJ200.
Be sure to leave a comment to let me know which one you think is the worst!

I agree that CRJs are not the most pleasant things in which to ride around. I am not a very tall guy either, and I feel quite cramped in the back of them. The flight deck is not bad though, I spend a year and a half flying them for Air Wisconsin. What bothers me the most about them is the 50 seat RJ is not used for the purpose for which it was originally designed. When they were first introduced the idea was to replace turboprops on the so-called "feeder routes" between smaller communities and the hubs. Flights of 30-60 minutes were the original target market for RJs. When they were first introduced, most passengers loved them because they had been so used to showing up at airports like Ithaca, New York and having to ride a Saab340 to Philadelphia. Now they were getting jets. But airlines soon realized they could use them on longer and longer routes. That is why we now commonly see RJs flying two and three hour sectors on routes that two decades ago were flown by 737s, 727s, DC-9s or the early A320s. If your expectation has been a Saab 340 or EMB-120 and you end up with an RJ, you are pleasantly surprised. If your expectation is a 737 or A320 and you get an RJ, you are severely disappointed.

Thank you for the insight, and that makes perfect sense. Good luck at Air Wisconsin, I hear they are a good airline to fly for. I'm sorry the sole type that Air Wisconsin flies always gets talked about in a bad way as well. Definitely nothing wrong with them inherently, just how little room there is in the back.

@PaleBit Alien JetBlue flies ERJ 190s in their fleet. The planes are configured in 25 rows of two by two. I only took short flights in them but the planes were very comfortable from a passenger's point of view. The newer Embraers, E-170 and higher are a nice plane. It's too bad their ERJ-145s are so dreadful.

I was a flight dispatcher for an airline that flew the CRJ200. When we got them we thought they were great because they replaced our Saab 340 turboprops and we thought they were a huge improvement. Compared to the Saab, they were. Where we lost our enthusiasm was when we no longer compared them to the Saab 340 but to every other regional jet out there. The ERJ-145 had 2-1 seating and was more comfortable. The ERJ-175 was like a "real" airliner and was better in every way. The CRJ700 and CRJ900 had more spacious cabins. As we got farther and farther away from our Saab 340 experience the worse the CRJ200 looked.

Very nice video! I flew on two Delta CRJ-200s, first flight being from MSP-XNA, then XNA-LGA. The first plane was horrible. Some of the seats were ripped, it smelled funny, and my window was scratched to the point where you could barely get a video out of it. Even the flight attendants were kind of snobby. Then on the way back, it was one of the nicest flights I've been on. Staff were nice, and the windows were clean. It seems like some planes are cared for very differently.

The windows are low because they had to raise the floor a few inches to make space for the avionics racks underneath. The 200 is a modified Challenger 300 which is a business jet. In order to make space for the required equipment they raised the floor, which makes the windows appear lower.

Due to the fact that there is many shorter routs aligned with SkyWest, as Jeb said, it makes financial sense. Routes from say SLC int airport, to St.Gorge UT regional airport this is a route that takes about 45 mins, and with the SG having a airport on the smaller side there is no room for say a Boeing 737 at that airport, discomfort is a given on aircraft from the late 90s and early twothousnads. As a aviation enthusiast I can say that theses airplanes are kinda like a trip down memory lane! Enjoy them while they last.

Hey Jeb - thanks for the good review. I totally agree with you on the shortcomings of the CRJ200 and I think you summarized those shortcomings very well. I am a loyal Delta Medallion flyer, so I can only speak to the Delta experience. One of my BIG beefs is that for reasons that are clear only to an executive who has NEVER flown on a CRJ200, Delta designates the first row for Comfort+ - really BAD idea! First what frequent flyer wants a bulkhead seat, second there is no extra room or amenities (everyone on the plane gets me beverage and food options) and third the overhead above these seats is filled with the safety equipment, so if you do want to put anything in an overhead, you have to go back to row 3. I have learned the hard way to be sure to uncheck the "upgrade to Comfort+" option when booking my flight, but from time to time I forget and get "downgraded to Comfort+". This then requires a call to Delta reservations to get them to override the change and sometimes they are not able to do this. In general I think Delta has good customer service and policies and I am a happy multi-million miler medallion flyer - but this is one that makes no sense! @DeltaAirlines - stop the madness!

EVERY single flight from Las Vegas to Seattle on the Frontier website went thru Denver.. THAT I understand.. Denver is their hub.. BUT EVERY single flight had a Denver layover of at LEAST 10 hours.. and several were up to TWENTY-TWO hours.. I guess it would work IF you had business in Denver to take care of during the layover.. As it was, Southwest had the best deal $135 roundtrip..

I love the CRJ. It is a small efficient plane that gets the job done. I love only 50 seats. Makes for easy embarkation and debarkation especially if you select the seat near the door. It is the perfect plane for the short one hour flight from Panama City to Atlanta. On and off in a mere few minutes. The CRJ was the better option. Now, Delta flies MD88s from ECP to ATL. Boarding and exiting is now five times as long. I miss the CRJ.

I actually didn’t mind my flight on the crj-200(Delta). It was surprisingly smooth, at least for my flight. The Crj-700s and 900s are worse IMO. The 200s also give access to tiny unknown airports, which is always pretty cool, and I’m pretty sure the people in those towns like having them. I've flown in CRJ200s many times--always with American Airline's American Eagle. While not the most comfortable of seats, they were tolerable for the short hops. A good friend advised me to only bring onboard a briefcase with my papers, and a few necessary items as the CRJs couldn't handle the "carry-on". That saved time when playing "guess the gate" between the smaller, regional airports and my departure gate at DFW, my connection to ONT in CA. ("Guess the gate" was a game I played every single time I flew into or out of DFW.) I declined the ubiquitous "snacks" served onboard. Surprisingly, the coffee was good. The only time I was afraid--truly afraid--in one was when we had a stick jockey hotshot young pilot taking off from O'Hare to AVP. He was driving through a storm front trying to reach cruising altitude as quickly as possible and be above the storm front. We got buffeted badly until he got clear of the cloud cover. Other than that, not a bad ride.

Nice review. All points are spot on. I have quite the love/hate relationship with the CRJ200. I love that they connect my tiny regional airport to larger hubs like DTW and ORD but I absolutely abhor everything else about them. As you highlighted, the windows are probably the #1 worst feature. Gate checking being the second worst. These terrible features have actually changed my strategy with flying. As a fellow #avgeek I always preferred the window seat, however with the windows so low on this aircraft it's not even worth it. I'm only 5'7" too! Also I used to be an staunch member of #teamcarryon but with being forced to gate check it's not even worth it to wait around like a chump in the cramped jet bridge for my bag. If I can't fit everything in a backpack I'm just counter checking that sucker all the way through. I'm glad that soon the 50-seat CRJ200 (and ERJ-145) will be phased out and allegedly replaced by larger 70+ seat aircraft like the CRJ-700 or ERJ-170 but I just fear how many thin routes will be cut as a result. Flying on a CRJ200 is an absolutely awful experience but it does get the job done.

@@mgoblue0970 @mgoblue0970 Yes, I agree, it was way too long of a flight on such a small jetliner. The LR model of the CRJ200 is capable of that flight and my flight was only a little more than 100 nautical miles more than your flight was. The airlines should be ashamed of using those aircraft on such long journeys. The smallest aircraft on such long routes over two hours should be an MD-80 or -90 series aircraft (or the more modern Boeing 717), all with five-abreast seating.

My husband is definitely not an avgeek, and he told me to book away from these on our periodic DTW-PVD trips. Once upon a time NW flew DC-9s or A320s on that route, but DL had multiple CR2s, which is a great example of mission creep. I get that places like Elmira, Ithaca, State College, or Alpena are only going to have jet service with a plane like the CR2, but subbing it in for mainline service is really inhumane. I've flown on 340s and ATRs, and would gladly pick either over a CR2 Now, the most wretched plane I have ever travelled on is the Swearingen Metro. These were 20-passenger turboprops flown by regional airlines in the 70s and 80s. They were narrow, with 1-1 seating, with a cabin 5'10 me couldn't stand up in. I was at school at Purdue, and the only airline flying to Lafayette was Air Wisconsin with its fleet of Metros. LAF-ORD was barely tolerable, but on one return flight from a job interview I connected at Detroit to Air Wis, flying to Lafayette with a stop in Fort Wayne. That was two+ hours of torture!

Welcome to Satin's Chariot. I've been a Platinum member with Delta for the past 12 years. Delta is still my preferred airline due to their overall customer service but I'm having a hard time stay with them primarily because of horrible excuse of a regional jet. The Comf+ row is an absolute joke... no leg room due to the bulkhead. All you get is a free drink. If you must fly on this horrible plane, I highly recommend forgoing Comf+ and sit in the exit row for a little extra leg room. Delta had phased the CRJ200 out at my airport but brought it back because of covid . We now seem to be stuck with it again. This year I've flown on it no less than 12 times. The planes are old, in disrepair and filthy. My last flight we had no beverage service at all. So, 6:00 am and no coffee or other drinks on a smooth 1.5 hour flight. Ed Bastian needs to take a long flight on this misery of a plane before they fire him.

The fun part was that you took off at say 1:00PM out of Muskegon and arrived at 1:00PM or even earlier at O'Hare because of the time change. I have to say this was always a very fun flight due to it's short distance (120 miles) the plane would climb very quickly and as soon as it reached cruising altitude it would start to descend.
