The Delta 12 1/2 inch portable planer, model 22-560, was one of several very similar models sold by the company. It was so popular that other companies copied the design to produce similar thickness planers. My planer recently stopped working, so it was time to disassemble it and find out what fix was needed.
I found a significant but repairable issue with the drive belt and pulley, but I also took the time to check, clean and lubricate the feed rollers, the gears in the transmission, and the chain drives. In this video I'll demonstrate how to take apart major components and even how to fabricate a replacement drive belt cover.
►To purchase:
amzn.to/3aLlLSK (140J6 drive belt)
amzn.to/3aEW6v3 (2-pack 140J6 drive belt)
amzn.to/3cnnfDb (Bel-Ray grease)

Thanks to your very helpful video on the Delta planer. Although mine was a Delta TP305, it was close enough to help me. To this end, I replaced the knives on my Delta TP305 planer with Shelix helical cutters. Not cheap but a great product. Although it took me most of the day to just disassemble my planer, the new cutter head went in seamlessly. Thank you for your helpful advice on the disassembly, cleaning & reassembly.

Great video. My planner had the exact same problem with the cover and loose nut on the cutter drive. It was making funny noises (loose nut) and now it’s working much better. Thanks.

Exactly what I needed to see before I take mine apart! I suspect the same issue with the belt. Great Job!

Great review! I have the same planer, and it started making noise. It turned out it was the same loose pulley issue, fortunately I caught it before the belt slipped off and damaged the cover. Very nice rehab of your machine. I have serviced the machine before and replaced some of the philips head screws holding the covers because they stripped out easily. I replaced them with button head hex screws.

Nice video. I'm doing a deep clean of a similar model. There is an a tension adjustment for the motor/belt. There are three hex screws just under the drive pully. Loosen the large one and the motor can swivel back and forth just a bit.

Success indeed! No mystery parts left over after reassembly (which is far too frequently the case when I attempt such endeavors) …

Ha! Yeah, no extra parts and no missing parts, either. When I do automotive or motorcycle work the bolts and screws pile up pretty quickly, and I've taken to using magnetic trays to hold the parts. It's just a metal dish with a magnet underneath, and they really help prevent the loss of tiny parts.

Good work. I’m in the middle of working on an identical planer that froze up. One of the feed rollers brackets dropped out. I don’t know the full extent of the problem yet but will keep at it. Again nice video.

Great video! I have some issues with my similar planer/thicknesser and this shows me what to expect when I take the covers off. You didn't show the removal of the rollers and cleaning them. They get a build up of sap and stuff which needs to be cleaned. Stumpy Nubs has a video about that. Thank you!
@enduringcharm
@enduringcharm Год назад
The rollers can get a build up, that's true. It depends on what you are planing, really. You may not need to remove the rollers to clean them, though. Often you can just raise the assembly up all the way and clean from underneath. When you are changing the blades and they are removed it's a good time to do this.

Greasing up those gears for the feed rollers is probably key to getting rid of the noise. Same thing happened to my ridgid 13” planer. Took apart the gears and greased em up and the noise was gone! Almost identical as far as how it all works

Well done!!!! I had about the same things happen with my planer. I've not taken the end panels off yet, so your vid is going to make my job much easier. I'm reasonably sure the drive belt has "bit the dust" or gone to dust, whatever. It has been a great machine. I planed some 11"X12' well dried white oak boards that made it grunt. I switched to 90cps and it mowed right on thru, or so it seemed. I'll pull the covers and let you know what I find with mine. I looked at one "parts supply" and their price on the belt was $109.++. I think the drive belt is readily available from a belt supply co. Later.

Thank you, my planer (Mastercraft, looks like made by Delta) screams like a banshee but runs fine when the wood is going through it for some reason? I'm going to overhaul it thanks to your demonstrations and video. thanks again, big thumbs up!

Take a hard look at any bearings. Sometimes when marginal or failed bearings are not under load they will squeal but quiet down when they are put under load.

Thank you for this video. I have the same planer. Curious, it looks like the key slot on the shaft is worn. Having been a few months now have you put some miles on it and has that pulley slipped or loosened at all? Getting ready to overhaul mine and as a precaution think I'll put a drop or two of blue locktite on that shaft.
@enduringcharm
@enduringcharm Год назад
Mine is still running, but it's definitely a concern. You'll see from my other recent video that I purchased a new planer since I can't afford downtime. However, I don't think loctite is a great idea for the keyway. It's too liquid in it's viscosity and there's a good chance it will flow into the nearby bearing before it cures. Obviously you want something reversible, though. And, the actual issue is more related to the pulley shaft hole getting wallowed out rather than the keyway. I would suggest trying automotive grade silicone instead. Coat the inside of the pulley hole and put some in the keyway before assembly, dab a little on the shaft threads then tighten the nut and leave it be for a solid 24 hours. The silicone will cure in that period and it shouldn't enter the bearing during assembly. It will keep everything in place but be removable if need be. Another thing I didn't mention in the video is the back of the pulley where it seats toward the inside of the machine. Examine that area to make sure it is dead flat and not gouged out from use. If it is, flatten it by rubbing on sandpaper on a flat surface.

The problem I had was the height adjustment. Had to take the chain guard off and clean out all the wood chips. They were getting in the chain and would not let it turn..

It is a good idea to either vacuum or blow out the unit with compressed air after a project to help prevent that problem.

Nice video! I came on here because on mine the thickness locking lever doesn't stay tight so that if I'm doing a number of boards I have to loosen and re adjust the depth and re-tighten. Mine , model tp 400ls in Canda, doesn't seem to tighten the same way though.
@enduringcharm
@enduringcharm Год назад
Well, on my model it's just a handle that turns until it makes contact and screws down tight. I've never had an issue with that. It's not much disassembly to take that apart and take a look, though.

How do you tighten the nut on the main pulley? You finger tighten it, but what do you do after that. Other than that omission your video is very helpful.
@enduringcharm
@enduringcharm Год назад
You can manually engage the locking pawl on the shaft to hold it still, which is normally spring loaded. Or you might be able to hold the shaft from the blade area using locking pliers or another tool, I never tried that.
@carguy4sp
@carguy4sp Год назад
Great video...I purchased one like yours at a yard sale and it has the exact problem except my blade roller pulley is a little worse than yours. Question ? the locking mechanism for the blades seems to lock automatically , it is spring loaded in the lock position. Does the centrifugal force of nthe motor spin the lock free during normal use. I have tested everything but I held the lock down so it would not engage. Too chicken to try it without holding lock down. So the lock does not engage when motor turns correct ?
@enduringcharm
@enduringcharm Год назад
That spring loaded lock occurs with the blade cover off. When you install the blade cover, you also push down a pawl which frees the rollers to spin. Don't turn it on without using the cover to keep the pawl unengaged!

Honestly, you can use almost anything on the metal parts, but you'll want to be cautious around the feed rollers. For the metal parts you could use scotch brite pads or steel wool and any solvent or degreaser you have available. When you are done, though, wipe the areas down with acetone or alcohol to remove any remaining solvent on the surface. For the feed rollers, use Dawn dishwashing soap and water or something mild like that so you don't dry out the rubber.

This is a great video! My issue is the rollers have locked and stopped feeding. I’m curious now that I have it apart, if by turning the roller gear thus by turning the chain drive… should I see the rollers turn? Everything turns freely except the rollers. Thanks!
@enduringcharm
@enduringcharm Год назад
If the rollers are not turning at all it would have to be a broken chain, or stripped gears or something else physically damaged. However, are you sure they really are not turning? Is it possible they are turning but not feeding the work piece? If the surface of the rollers is glazed, or damaged from abuse, they may turn but not actually be able to pull the wood through.
@donnacreager8428
@donnacreager8428 Год назад
@@enduringcharm the rollers were not feeding the stock at all. I’ve disassembled the sides and the chain is intact and gears are moving freely. The rollers seem to be locked. This is why I wondered if turning the gears would actually move the rollers, or if the motor needs to be engaged. When manually turning the gears, the rollers do not turn. When everything seems to be running smoothly… I’m at a loss as to why the rollers are not feeding. They are not ‘slipping’ as in dirty… they are locked and not moving.
@enduringcharm
@enduringcharm Год назад
Well, if you have both side covers removed you can either turn the assembly by hand (power off) and watch it move, or turn the machine on and watch what happens. The only possibilities are that the belt is slipping or a pulley is damaged on the drive side, or that a gear or sprocket is damaged on the transmission side. You say the rollers aren't feeding, but have you confirmed that the drive belt is working and turning the blades too? Maybe the rollers and transmission are okay but not getting power from the drive side?
@donnacreager8428
@donnacreager8428 Год назад
@@enduringcharm yes, the blades were moving, the rollers weren’t feeding. While the drive belt appeared good, I’ve ordered a replacement. Holding down on the mechanism to free the gears and allowing me to turn by hand, the chain drive appears to move fine and I can turn the blades by hand. However, the rollers do not move. It is possible that the revolution/gear ratio is so large that it might appear they aren’t moving. Trying to simply turn them by hand isn’t possible. I’ll continue to clean and put the new belt on and see what happens. Thank you for the vid and trying to help!
@enduringcharm
@enduringcharm Год назад
Oh, actually that could be your issue. If you are turning the main shaft by hand the rollers will move very slowly. Best to watch the gears of the transmission to see if they are turning. Remember, the motor will turn that shaft at thousands of RPMs. If in doubt, reinstall the belt and turn the motor on. You could even take out the knives first so there is no danger while you examine the machine.

You did a great job, was interested in the gear part. I had the same problem including the bushing between the locking lever was missing. Don't know if you knew to adjust the belt there is a bolt to the right of the upper pully that you can loosen which allows the motor to move. Acts just like a car. I'm interested in your dust cover, do you have a video on it or some plans? Don't know if you new but the parts for the 22-590 will work and available at ereplacmentsparts.com.

That dust cover was a MacGyver solution in a pinch, but I ended up using it for years! It was comprised of several off-the-shelf galvanized duct work parts, including a one-piece 12 inch transition from round to rectangular. I used foil tape to seal it and hold it together. I found a rubber boot to transition from the galvanized duct to the dust collection hose. It was all found in one of the box stores.
