Delta Wing Fighters: Rise, Fall and Comeback - Rafale, Gripen, Eurofighter Typhoon, Mirage etc.

Delta Wing Fighters like the Rafale, the Eurofighter Typoon or the Gripen, all have a similar general configuration. It seems that everything not stealth, and even some stealth planes, is sharing the same configuration.
Obviously there is a reason for that, and we are going to explore it in this video.
Enjoy!

Sir, thank you for an interesting and informative video. 1 - Superficial stuff: Your accent's fine, don't take any notice of the criticisms. Plenty of British speak much worse than you do! I don't mind the music except for the early blast which made me tear off my headphones. 2 - Technical stuff: I appreciated your explanations. two points, however: (i) I didn't see you address "Flat plate drag". I refer particularly to the entry into a loop. When the nose is first raised the aircraft at first continues straight ahead before responding to the forces of the control surfaces. This true of all wings of course, but the larger area of the delta incurs a greater drag and loss of energy at this point. (ii) Incidentally the Phantom isn't delta winged. 3 - I refrain from the "we invented it first" argument. I expect the Germans (Lipisch) invented it in terms of a serious research. There was undoubtedly cross-pollination throughout with the British research prototypes such as the Boulton Paul P111 , Handley Page P115, Fairey Delta-1, three different Avro prototypes 707A-B-C as part of the Vulcan programme, Fairey Delta-2 and the EFA program which led into the Typhoon. I mention however that Dassault joined the EFA programme at its outset, but left when they were not allowed to run the program and commit it to the SNECMA engine. So they had access to all the above information. Finally, I repeat my appreciation of this video. Thank you. Regards, Clive.

My guess is that part of the Tejas wing that is at 50' generates lift based on Bernoulli principle and the part of the wing at 62.5' generates lift using the vortex. This would make the plane more controllable at low speed however now Digital fbw handles low speed stability. The next question is what benefits a canard would bring to a Tejas?

Mille grazie! Excellent video! Your knowledge of, and passion for the subject shine through- I particularly enjoyed your excellent drawings, and would very much like to see more of them. Did you draw the aircraft freehand or trace them? I have a feeling you drew them, as there is a strong similarity of both style & level of detail. Again, it would be great to see more of them! Your technical drawings are also excellent, and greatly help to visualize some of the complex concepts presented here- it was fun to see the ease with which you quickly and accurately created them. Do you have a background in technical drawing or industrial design, or have you just been drawing aircraft since you were young? Allora- While I read the comments and your responses about the SAAB J35 Draken, I would politely request that it, and the F16 XL and other ‘hybrid’ delta wing aircraft might deserve a video of their own. Even if it is a more simplistic look at a potentially interesting ‘variation on a theme’ due to a lack of data- surely there must be enough information to clarify (or speculate) what the advantages and disadvantages are (lower landing speeds, f. ex.)? Perhaps if you were to include variable-geometry wings or some of the lesser known Soviet delta designs it could make for a comprehensive video. Thanks again!

Thank you for your channel. When we say the delta gives high drag at high Cl, aren't we really saying that the span loading is high? A conventional planform would behave the same way if it had such a short span. The delta lets us meet low speed and maneuvering requirements because of its high area and low parasitic drag, but don't we still need span to keep the drag down at high G's?
@Millennium7HistoryTech
@Millennium7HistoryTech 4 года назад
Yes and no. Mathematically, you might derive Cd as a function of span loading, but, from a physical point of view doesn't make a lot of sense. The lift producing mechanism, for a delta wing, becomes radically different as soon as the alpha increases above few degrees. The vortex separation starts happening and this changes the modelling. The drag is due to the lifting vortices, whose physics depends from the wing sweep, the geometry of the leading edge or the interaction with the fuselage. Cd is high because you have two monster yet stable vortices above the wing, dwarfing the effect of the two small ones at the wing tip (if they still happen). I don't know if I am clear.
@RobMorse
@RobMorse 4 года назад
@@Millennium7HistoryTech I understand, and thank you for your answer. For the same span loading, the delta platform has higher drag due to the very strong rolled up vortex fields compared to a straight wing. The delta flies with separated flow most of the time.

I can see structural engineering advantages to delta wings, as well. The airfoil is stiffened and supported for much more of it's area by the long attachment point to fuselage and the fuselage in turn is stiffened by the delta wing acting like a sort of triangular truss. Win-win and maybe increasing the critical loading on the whole unit...

Please explain the F-35 to me. How can the F-35B, STOVL, perform its ground support job with the same wing as the F-35A's air superiority wing??? They have different roles that operate at different altitudes AND different speeds. How could the same wing do both? Or, does it do neither very well??
@shi01
@shi01 4 года назад
It doesn't do both. Calling the A version an air superiority fighter is quite a stretch. The pure flight performance figures of all F35 variants are actually rather mediocre compared with other modern fighters. Also the B version isn't specifically meant for ground support, at least not more than the A version. If you look who had interest in the B version it gets rather clear what its intended use is. The Typhoon leans back a lot during slow speeds though.

Why there are not any variable sweep wing fighters anymore ?

There is a reason obviously, the delta wing made them obsolete and part of the explanation is in the next video. However there will be a full episode dedicated to that, so stay tuned!

My guess for fighters especially is weight, the gears used to move the wings being heavy, plus the extra complexity. It wouldn't help you in a turn fight, and speed seems much less of a focus nowadays.

Mirage was made for high altitude, vertical envelope fight. The F16, on the horizontal, and of course, the pilot would own it, however.

What causes the airflow to leak into a vortex? Is it the swept angle or the airfoil? Okay nvm it’s because of the sharp leading edge that causes flow separation which allows the higher pressure air on the bottom of the airfoil to leak to the top and rotate.
@Millennium7HistoryTech
@Millennium7HistoryTech 3 года назад
correct. You need a high sweep angle and a sharp(ish) edge
