Which album releases do you prefer to listen to? Do you listen to the bonus tracks or collect the physical releases?
@zaidnail3544
@zaidnail3544 4 месяца назад
I prefer the deluxe track, because of the unused scores, but the original since it combines some music.
@FilmScoreandMore
@FilmScoreandMore 4 месяца назад
Fairly reasoned for both.
@joemcken
@joemcken 4 месяца назад
I listen to both - specifically, I make a playlist using the most complete tracks from either score. Which basically means the deluxe score, plus any versions on the original album that aren’t on the deluxe album for whatever reason, or vice versa, as well as any other tracks found elsewhere that are sometimes on neither album. (RU-vid is an amazing resource for unofficial releases.)

@@joemcken Sounds like you have a comprehensive list! Do you have this for other scores as well?
@joemcken

@@FilmScoreandMore I do indeed, for every score I have. Probably … 80% of scores, or so, seem to have some or many tracks from the film cut down or outright missing, either on the original album or even on the deluxe. Crazy amount of great music that just isn’t officially available to fans.

I think the extra content on the deluxe albums are interesting, but it's hard to appreciate them as sit-and-listen experiences. When it comes to releasing a film score on album, a lot of work goes (or should go) into trimming the fat and providing a satisfying, narratively cohesive musical story, and I feel like the original albums achieve that better than the deluxe versions. But I think if someone's listening style is to navigate directly to their favorite cues and primarily listen to those, the deluxe albums are obviously the way to go!
@FilmScoreandMore
@FilmScoreandMore 4 месяца назад
Well said! I rarely listen to some of the obscure cues, but it's good to have. I really have no complaints withe original HTTYD album. Like you said, they trimmed the fat and it's a very satisfying listen (that actually features music cut from the movie).
@GediRitter
@GediRitter 4 месяца назад
I agree, this is the case with the httyd delux albums (and probably others too xD) However it doesn't have to be this way. The Lord of the Rings - Complete Recordings albums for example are the ultimate way to listen to the lotr music in my opinion. But it also doesn't have any alternative/scrapped tracks I think.
@MamaSymphonia

@@GediRitter Yes- the LOTR complete albums are actually highly curated expansions of the original score rather than simply repositories of unused material. I agree, they are better in every way than the original releases!

Not even the FYC promotional album for Dragon 2 from back in 2014/15 had the "Dragon's Lair" cue because for some reason it only provided the film edit of the score and not quite the COMPLETE score; notice how "Together We Map the World", "Get 'Em You Son of Eret", and "Battle of the Bewilderbeast" are missing some material on the FYC album because the music was cut from the film, so naturally "Dragon's Lair" was left off entirely. The 2022 Deluxe Edition CD was the world premiere for this "mystery cue" and it caught me completely by surprise!
@FilmScoreandMore

It surprised me too, but I never even knew the FYC version! It was just new, undiscovered music when it came out. That’s what made it so interesting.

@DavidLi-xt5mf FYC means “For Your Consideration.” It’s a high quality, very complete version of the score they send out for award considerations. A lot of film music fans collect it becoming it’s so good.

I gotta be honest - I’ve always hated the practice of releasing multiple soundtrack albums per movie, each with different tracklists. Things like demo versions or cut tracks, I can understand leaving out (though less so the cut finished tracks - just include those and include “(unused)” in their titles), but full cues that are present in the film, which are sometimes some of the most memorable tracks in the movie? I can’t think of any reason other than studio greed not to include those, as a way to justify releasing a second, “more complete” album later if there’s enough demand. It just rubs me the wrong way. I remember discovering, when I was much younger, that the Titanic album (the first OST album I ever got) had maybe half the movie’s music on it, with some of my favorite cues (including the title cue!) missing. I felt so cheated - what am I paying for if the cues I want aren’t even on the album? Do you go to a restaurant and pay for a meal and then content yourself with a side-dish and half the main course? Ugh. So my practice nowadays is to just build my own album, so to speak - I scour the Net, including RU-vid, for the fullest, most complete versions of a movie’s soundtrack, including and especially tracks that aren’t officially available on any album, and I use those to build my own “complete” albums that I listen to. Jeez, I’m realizing how negative this comment sounds, lol. Sorry about that. This practice just really bugs me.

I understand. You want what you'd expect. I'm glad you go out and assemble what you can, there's a lot out there.
@joemcken
@joemcken 4 месяца назад
Heck, speaking of the ‘Titanic’ OST, I still can’t believe it took THREE album releases - the original 1997 album, the bonus 1998 ‘Back to Titanic’ album, and finally the 2017 “20th Anniversary Edition” - before the title cue was released, as well as others (like the bagpipe jig that plays during the Lovejoy chase down the elevator, or the “Rose lets go of Jack” cue, etc.). Three albums and 20 years before we finally got the full cue list from the best-selling movie soundtrack of all time. I’m glad it was finally made available, but man, that’s just inexcusable.

Do you think things will change going forward and releases will be more complete (or re-releases will happen faster, like with these HTTYD items)?

@@FilmScoreandMore Oh, I have no idea. I imagine the advent of the Internet and the ease with which people share music (legitimately or otherwise) online may influence the industry in some way, but I’m not nearly knowledgeable enough to hazard a guess as to how. Hopefully, though, the fact that soundtrack albums can now be released digitally with minimal effort, without the hassle and expense of producing physical media, will encourage studios to put out more albums faster. But in the end, we can only wait and see.

Excellent video! I appreciate the info cover of these differences even though I already have all the deluxe albums. Good humor as well! I found myself hearing both Into The Hole and New New Tail repeat themselves and was _dying_ to hear them progress. What I love about the deluxe albums is that they tell the story of the movie instead of their musical story as told in the original album (as another commenter put it). It allows me to watch the full thing when I'm driving to college or Church. And finally, man I would kill to have a deluxe album for Revenge of the Sith. I'm my opinion, Williams's strongest work.

This is great! There are advantages and disadvantages to each release and you hit all the important notes! I would say that the demo track you played, I could hear it was the demo track as a horn player, but for most non musicians, and even non instrument specific players the demo tracks are getting scarily accurate. As a film score fan, I'm always going for the complete score/session recordings or Deluxe albums

@@FilmScoreandMore I got the deluxe for 1 and 2 (before 3's was released). I wanted the extra scores, especially the reprise for "Where no one Goes," and didn't see much sense in paying for them twice to get the nicely cut versions. I admittedly haven't listened to 3's music on its own with the exception of "As Long as he's Safe" and "There Were Dragons."
