This is what happens when you are outclassed on a technical level. I have a firm belief that sweeps and subs can be done on a similarly skilled opponent if you use enough brute force, but if someone is on a technical level above yours and able to avoid bad spots instead of defending, that weight quickly becomes almost useless.

Hey Jordan, 8 month practicing and 55 year old white belt here so hopefully it isn't a dumb question. You once had a short for defending a bow & arrow choke which was to keep the elbow in front. How would that work in the type that Demetrius performed?

I'm a lightweight and love to see these classic little guy beats big guy matches. As a small counterpoint my professor brought up a good point today, Mighty Mouse is a professional athlete whose job is to train. The guy he beat probably has a day job and is just a hobbyist who trains 3-5x a week for 1-2 hours a pop. It's still great to see the little guy win but it's not like he beat John Jones or some other professional heavyweight.
@rhysmorris85
@rhysmorris85 2 месяца назад
Yeah but the sheer size difference definitely works to even out that professional advantage. A 100lbs weight difference is no joke and he is also a brown belt so the technical knowledge shouldn't be that far removed for the bigger guy. This is definitely an incredible feat!

I want to spend more time on the mats, but the problem is nobody around me runs classes when I’m off of work. so I’m paying three different memberships to roll at three different gyms One day during the week. Thursday 8 am 10th planet affiliate, Saturday 8am at Gracie Baja affiliate, Sunday night 7pm at Fabio Santos affiliate. Occasionally, I’ll do a double on one of the weekends driving an hour for an open mat. Not sure why I’m doing it either Other than the thought of getting my knees Fd up🤣

Big guy likely gets by on size and strength instead of technical prowess. He broke almost every BJJ axiom in this one short round. I’ve been there but am not not so big + a lot older and would be toast if I hadn’t spent time correcting bad habits I built as a person with a size and strength advantage!

How often do you lose a match/roll ONLY because the guy was bigger ? Very rarely. Because being bigger doesn't cut it. Being bigger with a similar amount of skill is when it's a problem. Bigger guys with significantly less skill still get rekt. So again, he's probably okay at bjj lol

Amazing! after watching this, I honestly think bjj should do away with guard. or at least penalize it. Bring catch wrestling ruleset back. Guard is only useful if you compete in your weight class or lower. In mma and absolute divisions, you'll either get punched/slammed(mma) or smashed(sport bjj). People say they'll just adapt. But if you've primarily been a guard player for the past 10 yrs and suddenly switch to mma and find yourself in a bad spot, you're more likely to pull guard instead of scrambling back up, due to muscle memory. even though you know logically you shouldn't. Having a wrestler's mindset in a bjj/mma/self defense situation, is the best option. "Be on top, stay on top, win on top. Think street,while practicing sport" - Chris haueter. It's why mma fighters who transition to bjj sport are often more successful, than submission hunters/spammers who transition to mma. Position before submission.
@kris3451
@kris3451 2 месяца назад
Unfortunately, competition BJJ (especially Gi) is completely a sport at this point. Would you penalize Judo grips that allow punches/kicks/headbutts through? If not, it makes little sense to expect BJJ to adhere to striking principles. Personally, I train in a way that avoids positions that wouldn't be useful in MMA/no-rules fighting. But that means totally avoiding "competition" strategies all together. e.g. no closed guard (except to control posture/strikes temporarily), no inversion or heavy leg-lock focus, no taking the back from standing/turtle, releasing subs and countering as soon as any form of lifting is initiated. Everything has to work on someone 20-30kg heavier than me (or at least have a real chance to), otherwise I try to forget it. I started out training MMA, so never trained Gi anyway. But if you want to be a competitor (especially Gi)... there's almost no chance you're also gonna stay "fight safe". The moment anyone puts on some grappling gloves and does a strike round (also watching for upkicks) they realise 70-80% of the stuff they learnt is useless. Ain't no way sport BJJ is coming back to self defense relevancy.
@user-wf2zc7gt5q
@user-wf2zc7gt5q 2 месяца назад
@@kris3451 With judo, i've lost hope, since they restrict grips more and more at the olympic level for absolutely no reason. But for, bjj, if they were to adhere to a catch wrestling ruleset, where a victory is through submission or through a pin, athletes would naturally start seeking top positional control instead of guard playing. that's the closest you can get in a sport environment to simulate a real fight There needs to be a universal ruleset when it comes to bjj. but that's going to take some time.
