Trying to get sober being a non-celebrity is hard enough. As an ex-addict the title of this video caught my eye. I thought I'd be dead by my own hand before I turned 30, but the survivor in me had other plans. I've been sober 19 years (consecutive😏 )& next month I'll be 61 years old.
Been “California sober” for 12 years and swear by it for me personally. Never relapsed on harder stuff again. More people need to understand the value of harm reduction but as Joe said people want to think of it in absolutes. Recovery is not black and white.
No doubt. Everyone wants absolutes nowadays, whether it be with politics, drugs, diet, all of this shit. Why should any addiction be solved by going cold turkey or completely cutting it over time. Look at people that crash diet, or go on major diets, the fail rate isn’t even astonishing anymore. I firmly believe that moderation is the answer to most if not all of these problems. California sober is the essence of being happy. I’m Talking as a highly functional alcoholic. Although I do go on extended amounts of time of cold turkey but only because my moderation has gotten me used to Not drinking, as soon as I drink though I fight the need to consume by keeping my consumption moderated, instead of a bottle a night, I drink a bottle in 3-5 days But only if the bottle is opened. A way I keep myself cold turkey is by keeping the ‘Cork’ as a barrier
Great, that may work for you- as you stated, everyone's recovery is different. but for a ton of people, weed and (especially) alcohol, can be an immediate trigger into relapse. This "California sober" (LOL) thing she's doing is absolutely playing with fire. Do not at all be surprised if she relapses. Coming from another heroin addict, I really hope the best for her, but she is literally playing with her life by doing this.
Yeah and that’s what works for you and that’s great. It didn’t work for me however or anybody else that I’ve known except a few people. Seriously though glad it works for you
Demi: "I had three strokes. A heart attack and multiple organ failure and I still have brain damage from it." Joe: "What kind of brain damage?" Demi: "I have blind spots in my vision and I also had hearing loss from everything." Joe: *"That's crazy.. Have you ever tried DMT?"*
I’m calling BS on three stokes ive seen ppl have a single stoke and you can still clearly see the effects so her having 3 stokes and a heart attack and look completely normal 2 years later I’m not buying it. Plus a heart attack and organ failure but need no surgery’s give me a break I could be wrong but I doubt it? If anyone knows the truth let me know.
Maybe Demi lovato should come to grips with the fact that maybe the Hollywood life is NOT for her. Some people can’t handle it. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. Sadly, the money and the lifestyle traps you in that world. You can’t stop.
It’s not just the lifestyle and money. Even if she would decide to become a nurse tomorrow and give all her saved money to people in need. A person like her can never get back to normal life, she crossed a Line of fame that her anonymity is gone forever. She can’t just live in the suburbs like Jane Doe from Ohio can..
@@NWYVR yes there’s no turning back once you hit that level of fame. I can only imagine having that kind of pressure on me 24/7. The body weight issues, paparazzi, crazy fans, expectations, not being able to be yourself and acting for the sake of your career. You literally sell your soul to be in that business. And yes it has its perks. More money than you can spend, adulation, popularity, attention. But it comes at a price. It seems like she’s not happy in that life at this point. But she’s at a level where you can’t just get out. She has a lifestyle that she can’t turn away from. Some people live the celebrity life easily. The pressure never gets to them and they make it look easy. Her not so much.
Gene Simmons from KISS has never needed drugs or alcohol in his life but he was probably a sex addict. He actually respected his mother and what she went through with the holocaust that he would never embarrass her by using drugs or alcohol.
Kidding aside, when someone tells you who they are, you aught to believe them. At least I general, unless they have warped views of themselves to the negative eg annorexia, but you get what I mean.
After an Narcotics Anonymous meeting, I said to the guy running it. I drink and smoke weed occasionally, Are there any type of meetings for people who drink or smoke weed, but don’t do heavy drugs. He said “ya, it’s called a fucking party, are you serious ?” I laughed so hard and yes it was a serious question.
Haha, I remember in highschool, a kid's Christian Mom called the police on him, who tore up his room, and tried to send him to rehad after finding a baggy of weed.
looool.... In all seriousness though, Alcohol is a INSANELY powerful drug. 50$ worth of booze can easily kill you (and put you in worse state then crack, opiates/opiods, etc) . The substance is prettty addictive. What makes things worse society really makes it so easy to drink long enough to become addicted (sports events, dancing, family events etc). I once was getting the shakes after december to january. i had so many family, bar, hockey, new years events and got wasted at every one . The physical withdrawl is one of the few that can truly kill you by itself. I had methadone doctors tell me serious alcohol withdrawl is more dangerous then opiate withdrawl. Normally it takes a co morbidity for morphine withdrawl to kill you. This isn't the case with alcohol.... To me its pretty crazy you buy such a insanely powerful stubstance but not another... Im for more liberty but for far more harsher drunk driving penalties. Like 10 years license revoke at least for driving SERIOUSLY drunk (not just 2 beers )
@@MichaelPhillips-jw4bj there are a lot of drugs that affect the GABA receptors and share a similar withdrawal risk as alcohol does, it’s just that alcohol is the most common and well known of all of them. Glad you’re alright after all that.
Uhhhh Yeah....I smoke weed all the time. If you don’t believe it’s another form of a getaway you’re stuck in the trap 😂...that being said I still love my weed 😂
California sober = find another addiction that gets you high, but you won’t die . You still be addicted to something but it’s healthier than hard drugs
You dont get physical addiction to weed like you do with heroin or crack. Its mental addiction that only effects weak minded people. Weed addiction is a choice dont misinform people.
Its crazy how many of the beloved outgoing shining stars of my childhood were truly in more pain than my 7 year old self could imagine. Especially the Disney stars. I'm glad some of them are able to find peace in this world.
@@elcid9054 grass is always greener. Right now, in your mind, it’s easier to kick drugs than make more money and move up the socioeconomic ladder. Maybe once you’re wealthy and have all the stability and materialistic things you want, making money would be a lot easier than kicking a drug
Me- “ooooo she has a “treatment team”, so rich!” 🙄 Demi- “I overdosed on crack and heroin had 3 strokes and a heart attack!” Me- ....ok she needs a treatment team! 👀
Still really pathetic. A rich clown spending money on clownish behavior, and instead of cleaning herself up, she pays a team to hose her down, pathetic, no personality, this woman is more likeable on heroine.
I have a friend thats a former alcoholic, he lost his job, his family, his kids, everything. Went to rehab, come out, was good for a bit but was totally unhappy. He started drinking again, but before he got too addicted he started smoking weed. He doesn't drink any alcohol, he has a good job back, visition with his kids, and he smokes in the evenings and is in a good place and this has been going on for years.

I’ve been California sober for several years now and I believe weed has helped keep me sober. My emotions just go crazy sometimes and it’s uncontrollable... having a joint ready for me in the evening gives me something to look forward to when I’m struggling. And that truly makes all the difference.

I wish the best in the future for Demi, my daughter and any others who suffer from these things as well. 🙏
I’m a recovering opioid and cocaine addict. Tried abstinence. Never worked. I am Cali sober! I am in medical assistant school & got my cosmetology license. It’s not one’s business or place to tell anyone what they should do for their recovery.
I've never really liked her genre of music, but I appreciate her as a person finding herself. That's not easy, especially for someone who grew up in the spotlight - being judged on every aspect of her life and choices. Glad she's on a better path.
I feel that she hides her addiction better after each relapse and tells everyone that she gained back her self control.I just wish her the best and hope she finds a way out
Yea that's how most addicts are. I'm 4 years sober by some miracle but if I had her kind of money when I was using I dno if I would've ever hit rock bottom. I would 100% probably be dead
tbh I've been done with this "celebrity" Since she was on drugs the first time tbh she has no reason to be doing these drugs she isn't running from anything ya know like a lot of drug addicts have reasons why they get caught up she doesn't have one sorry, and if I ever was lucky enough to be gifted as her the type of person I am makes me think I would never do drugs because life is too busy
@UR DADDY No one wakes up and wants to do "herion" you start with pills it progresses! If it was just as simple as "don't do heroin" we wouldn't have the epidemic in America. You should go educate yourself remember: You important, you special , you SMART"
It’s kind of hard to empathize with someone like her from the POV of an average Joe. She was a Disney star by 12. She was probably a millionaire by 18 and has never worked a “real job”.
@@angelgjr1999 that doesn’t mean she isn’t a person and goes through real like problems. She was raped at 16. I was raped at 19 the first time and have a regular job. It doesn’t matter what you do for a living, people go through shit, have emotions, and cope in different ways.
I mean for god sake‘s isn’t frozen yogurt diet ice cream? It’s awfully ironic that she gets pissed off about sugar free options when she’s in a diet ice cream shop haha
If drugs are a coping mechanism for you and not something you did exclusively for fun, you might not actually have addiction running in your genes, which is essentially what you mean by an addictive personality.
And her food addiction is proof of that... Addiction can affect any area of your life... There are so many red flags going on in these interviews, it's scary...
Replacing the drug of choice doesnt make it any less of an addiction. Idk why we stopped considering weed a drug. It's legal in a lot of places...cool but her controlling the fact she can have alcohol and weed just to prove she won't die from meth or heroine is not recovery. Imo. It's the same damn thing we just simply look the other way.

I don’t understand why people still slander Demi Lovato for being a struggling addict. At least she’s still alive. She could’ve been dead already. She got the second chances that Amy whine house or Mac Miller didn’t have
She isn’t a bad person. She isn’t going out in the world and hurting people like some people do when they are hurting inside. She takes her issues out on herself. Anyone that has something negative to say about her because of her addictions are ignorant people.
The difference between an eating disorder and a drug addiction is that you have to eat. You need food to survive so it actually makes sense to me that you would figure out a way to overcome eating disorder. Drugs are different you don't need them. That is something that once you start doing it is very hard to control

I 100% agree. it’s so sad and quite honestly, terrifying. I’m Canadian sober. Marijuana is legal across our entire country. Every province it’s legal. So I assume it’s similar to California sober. But because not all states in America is it legal so that makes sense to me! I use it for chronic pain and I micro dose edibles I buy at a local dispensary and it’s such a healing medicine! I gift from Mother Nature!
I'm canadian and I wish it really wasn't legal. I had no health issues before. Now I had to move appartments 3 times because my neighbours smoked weed and it made me sick. Not just a slight headache, I wouldn't be able to sleep, I'd cough my lungs out for hours, I'd have a terrible migraine, mood swings, hoarse throat... to name a few. And to make matters worse, I work from home. So I couldn't work anymore and the authorities can't be bothered because it's FUCKING LEGAL. So yeah, as much as the junkie kids enjoy their new drug, a lot of people suffer from THEIR choices and everyone would be better off without it.
@@camille8010 that hilarious. Unless there are nonstop smoking, then there’s no way to affect you that much, unless you have some sensitive lungs and health issues. So it sounds like a YOU problem. @@sheenaldeo It sure sounds like you know my health condition far better than my doctor. perhaps you should give him a call and explain your medical analysis ? I don't have any lungs issue or sensitivity. And yes, the secondhand smoke was almost always there. The reason is simple, the person smoked once a day, and the smell and vapes infused in the walls and pipes. It would slowly disperse throughout the day, constantly making me cough and more and more sick from the exposure. As for the "natural" origin of weed, water is natural , why don't you drown in it ? or, wait, even better, I'd like you to try the all-natural-cure Belladonna? I'm sure you'll appreciate it :D. You really shouldn't accuse me of being selfish when you're the ones IMPOSING your choices on others and ruining other people's lives. Idc if your sober for 30 years. I believe the voice in your head will never go away that wants you to do drugs. All you do is learn how to manage it and realize that voice isn’t you.
“California Sober” works until it doesn’t. If you’re truly an addict, and Demi is, you’ll eventually find your way back to drugs. It may be a few years, but I’ve been through this enough to know it doesn’t work. But neither does abstinence only, at least not at first. Sobriety is complicated.
Hey, everyone has to find their own journey. If that's keeping her safe and keeping her away from other substances, long enough to find what does work, that is A BLESSING!!!
She's struggling and it's obvious and I think she's gonna relapse again. Something about her seems off to me. Maybe the fact that she's not confident yet or sure about her sobriety. Drug addicts that are ready for their recoveries have a confidence and a determination in their eyes, something that I don't see in her. I watched her documentary and her journey is interesting. What was shocking was the fact that she relapsed after her hospitalization. So her brain damage didn't scare her that much as she claims. If the 3 strokes, permanent blindness and the heart attack didn't stop her, then nothing will. And that 'California sober' to me seems like an excuse. She really is dancing with the devil and playing with her luck at this point. I hope she makes it until 35. I'm not a fan of her music but it's always sad watching artists fade away. I really really hope I'm wrong and she stays strong.
I saw what you're describing. She seems like she's still in a battle. There's a fragility about her. And I remember her stepdad saying she very good at convincing you there's nothing wrong and she's fine.
huge Demi fan here, I think she really doesn't want to live anymore and it pains me a lot to say this because if her having 3 strokes, heart attack, vision and hearing loss, being s*xually assaulted while overdosing doesn't hit you rock bottom then nothing will.
My girlfriend was “California Sober” and she started smoking 10 times a day. Joe is absolutely spot on with saying weed can also be addictive (psychologically). But people aren’t ready to hear that yet 🙄
@@butterball_ its doesn't matter. Someone who is addicted to drugs shouldn't be smoking weed or drinking period. California sober is not going to work in long term.
Truth! As someone who was addicted to smoking weed for 20 years- this is spot on. I used to think I couldn’t function without weed after quitting using other drugs- and honesty weed was just as addictive. It didn’t do the damage other things did but it was just as addicting, and it held me back from a lot. I quit smoking almost a year ago and man I feel so much better. Being a stoner does not mean people aren’t addicted.
Wish her all the best, so many people in hollyweird will do everything in private and never talk about it. I’m glad she talks about mental health, addiction from her own experience. She’s also the best vocal artist we have today.
Another random guy here. You got it man, go day by day, hour by hour, 1 minute at the time. Don't be so hard on yourself and keep your love ones close. Stay strong and never stop fighting!
I'm with you soldier. 20+ years of heavy use every day - all day. Just quit the final vice (weed) a month ago. It wasn't easy, but if I can do it, you have to. Be gentle with yourself and a lion to the world.
My brother was a hard core addict. He smoked weed or was "California sober" and it didn't stop him from ODing. Does that mean it won't for everyone...no but there's a reason why they advise against it in early recovery. I'm a huge fan of her voice. I say it that way bc frankly over the years I stopped liking her as a person but I still think she's one of most gifted singers of my generation. With that being said she has some serious mental health issues on top of her addiction. I hope for the love of everything she is staying away from the stuff that could kill her but it's not a secret she has codependency issues with men or "love" and the idea of it and self worth issues. She needs to actually address these things out of the spot light or we will hear about another incident on the news. IMO. Everytime she "comes back" there's a level of performance about it. She's copes with work...she needs to cope with something else. I've followed her since I was a teenager. Followed her story and every recovery stint and her OD. There's a pattern. I hope she breaks it and find what works. I want the best for her. If that's "California sober" sure. Whatever idc. But if it ends in another OD I wouldn't be shocked.
Many twelve step programs encourage you to smoke cigarettes. A lot of this ends up just coming down to addictive habits, and frankly being addicted to something less harmful is a win. It isn't always as easy as just getting off and telling yourself to not do it again. Sometimes people with addiction just need anything to get them through, so frankly I would agree. I'm sure her smoking weed also isn't just how other people may smoke either, I'm sure it's controlled in some way to keep in in line with what I've stated
I tried the whole "green only" lifestyle after quitting drinking but the problem is when your a true addict and do things compulsively there is absolutely no moderation in anything you do. After a few years of heavy use (because all I know is heavy use), I was basically just spending hundreds of dollars a week to feel tired. For someone with a bunch of money it might be harder with all the pressure and seemingly endless access. It's much better to sit in the uncomfortableness than to turn to another vice.
Weed isn’t a vice to everyone though. Just like alcohol isn’t a vice to everyone. Just because it didn’t work for you doesn’t mean it couldn’t work for anyone. You’re not that important believe it or not.
@@jad7932 literally anything can become a problem if you don’t use it properly though. Life isn’t sunshine and rainbows, it has nothing to do with weed. Don’t tell other people they can’t have a cheeseburger just because you became fat eating them.
@@mattdecker8724 my whole point is this girl sounds a lot more like me than joe so she should probably just stay sober. It's just my life's experience and I can say whatever the fuck I want, when and where I want. Don't read it, don't reply to it if it bothers you.
I'm so proud of her being so honest and happy. Weed unfortunately can cause Schizophrenia if you have a family predisposition, and she mentioned her dad had Schizophrenia. So I'm glad her treatment team is aware of what she's doing and they know her history so she can stay safe ❤️
That's not quite correct. Weed has not been shown to cause schizophrenia at higher rates than those that do not smoke weed. A strong cannabis trip however could be a stressor just like losing a parent or a bad breakup which also causes schizophrenia. To be clear they sure aren't 100% sure but the rate at which it occurs is nearly identical between pot smokers and non-pot smokers and the idea is that a stressor precipitates the schizophrenia and that it would have to be there already and we can be that stressor. So to reiterate as of now the research shows you can only get schizophrenia from Cannabis if you were going to get it anyway. That being said schizophrenia usually happens in the early twenties whether induced by cannabis or by natural stressors and I would definitely caution people from doing it too young. I first started when I was 12 but only tried it and started using more regularly around 17 and have major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder social phobia, OCD and unexplained disabling stomach pain. I've obviously had other issues in my life but I think a lot of the mood ones have to do with early cannabis and alcohol use.
@@finchisneat Wow I thought weed was known to help with mental health issues such as ocd, depression, anxiety, etc. I’ve been contemplating trying it since I’m dealing with severe depression but I’m not sure
So basically she’s not completely “sober”. I’m not sure I’ve met anyone who is 💯 clean n sober without 💊 meds from a doctor or a glass of wine once in a while.
Call it what you want to call it she is in recovery. Personally I quit everything but some people use marijuana to create a stable mental health and control their triggers. It is also called harm reduction. Jessica Kent did a great video on how california sober can work and be beneficial. At the end of the day if she is working a program just be happy for her, if it doesnt work out for her she will have to change something. She is just doing what she thinks is best for herself
@@sonnyjiim5239 i thinks it depends on the person wants and needs. I know some people who used weed and needed a stronger substance for a better high, and people like me who won’t go past weed unless it’s shrooms or... fuck it dmt too 😂
I understand what she is saying and I’ve seen many people in Recovery who use something. For me, I will never trust my self to drink again. I hope the very best for her!
@@user-iz2je1ff5h yes and no. It’s sad from our perspective but in reality most women are just uninterested and thats just how things go, nothing to get hurt over. My girlfriend hates watching car races with me, shell still watch them though, but I know she’s not interested, cant blame her 🤷♂️
She’s 100% telling the truth. The use opiate antagonists to treat bulimia. That snort and Skoff sounded more like a “mind blown” sound. We couldn’t see him but, that’s the sound I made when I found out it was true!
