​@Tommy Bronze You should read 'In Plain Sight: The Life and Lies of Jimmy Saville' by Dan Davis. The original hardback is a doorstopper, weighing in at least my or so. But utter fascinating. The man who wrote it didn't spend a few weeks with him, but more like over a year. And this is the scary part: Dan isn't exactly a chump, either. But here's the thing about genuine psychopathy, or, as the DSM-V describes it, Antisocial Personality Disorder: they tightly wrap themselves within multiple layers, to the point all you see is what they want you to see. In Saville's case, as described in the book, he could fool almost everyone as this charming, affable, avuncular, eccentric, personality. Heck, for some reason I can't recall, but which is covered in that book, he was buried with a Green Beret, as the Royal Marines made him a Honorary Commando. A maternal cousin of mine was an actual Enlisted Commando himself, and one of the smartest people I know. How the hell did Saville pass the sniff test on that one, nobody knows. Then there's the whole Broadmore thing, where he was practically given the keys to the entire hospital. As you very well know, that place is filled to the rooftops with the most mentally ill, and dangerous people, in England, if not the whole of the UK. Yet, he was given free lodgings there by some of the foremost Forensic Psychologists, and Psychiatrists in the nation. My point being is that Saville built such an elaborate façade, behind which lay a pathological liar, to the point that Dan, after Saville's death, had to do a complete re-evaluation of not only all his interview notes, but spends a considerable amount of time into _really_ digging into that man's past, only to discover a labyrinth of mirrors, some more distorted than others, and some dark mirrors, which reflected little light at all. But, as Dan writes, the truly worse thing was the construct that Jimmy Saville built around himself was almost so air-tight, that he fooled an entire nation as this eccentric guy, that everyone loved, because of his extrovert personality. I myself have seen that on a personal scale. My dad was, in his lifetime, not only a respected driver on the District Line, but, later, a postman whom helped, in little ways, the elderly people on his route. He even developed a casual acquaintance with William Woollard. What no-one would ever expect was he began sexually abusing my younger, severely disabled, sister and I, when I was 14; once a fortnight for years. And he was violent with it ... But he wasn't the real monster. That was was our mum, whom not only gaslight me into pretending it wasn't happening, but fooled everyone around her as being this loving parent, especially of a disabled child. But behind the front door, she was everything but. I felt like I was raising my sister more than she was in ways that no 15yr old had had to with any younger sister. When I told my therapist what I had to do for my sister - which I will spare you the details - she was shocked, and angry for me. In her 30+ years of clinical experience, she has never heard a more dysfunctional person than my mum. So when, finally, dad was given a nine year prison sentence, my therapist said my mum should've recieved at least half of that, for what she didn't do, as much as what she did do. And yet, in the church she belonged to, she was held up as this suffering person ... who would visit my dad on a regular basis, whilst still locked up ... those same church Elders would also take me to see him, too, despite knowing full well what he had done ... Hence that book resonated with me, as I know what evil in disguise looks like ... I don't blame Louis one bit. For if my dad and mum where able to fool people close to them of their true nature, then Saville easily got away with deceiving an entire nation, except for whom I suspect knows child sexual abuse on a personal level ... ... for even after my mum's death, her side of her family has disowned me ... for just telling the truth, and shattering their hagiography of her, which they still believe to be true. No apologies ... just set adrift. And, now that my dad is also dead, I have scant support from even my aunt, his younger sister, and nothing from his older brother ... Insight into evil, which few genuinely have, without experience, find it hard to understand those whom do. In my case, I'm 48, and aside from my physical disabilities, those seven years of physical and sexual abuse has left me a pretty broken man that is only now able to rebuild something out of ruins, abet I will never be employable again ... In short, both Louis and Dan where deceived by an evil that neither could possibly understand as it went far beyond what the human mind can conceptually perceive ... ... but only those touched by it, can. In my case, my insight has come with a cost far too high to pay back ...

@@tommybronze3451 Well the entire British public was taken in by Saville. Most British parents were dying to get their kids to meet old Jimmy for a Jim'll fix it medal. Theroux' interview was the first time many actually noticed Saville was a bit odd as Theroux's disarming style enabled someone who was incredibly good at hiding his dark side to show it for moments. I remember watching it and thinking, my god this guy is actually mental. In hindsight, obviously _everyone_ knew he was a wrong ' un all along. In reality, almost no one did at the time apart from his victims and some people close to him. Saville was very skilled at deceiving people.

Louis has no perspective on life, he was born into money. Its how he was able to be a journalist almost all of them are trust fund kids. It’s to some extent a pretty good analogy though. Take the pandemic for example, with how the media censored one side of the argument to do with vaccines, lockdowns etc they created a false reality around the world. Andrews niche is he refers to this false reality as the matrix because if you have seen the film it makes sense.

My wife bought me a new watch for my birthday in November - a Casio. I'd worn my previous one - a Citizen - for 26 years and replaced the strap multiple times. Just like Louis, I don't need or want flash things.

I stopped wearing a watch years ago, when mine broke. There are so many clocks around (on the radio, appliances, in public and on the shattered screen of my mobile phone) that I found I didn't even need one attached to me anymore.

Louis is from a wealthy background and was privately educated at a school where half of the students end up at Oxford or Cambridge. When you come from this kind of background, I think you’re less likely to strive for material possessions for the purpose of showing them off than if you’ve grown up poor. It’s unlikely to impress your peers that are also wealthy. More likely to have academic goals or seek power in one way or another.
