It was funny, but years later, I came to realize that the reporter's question was completely valid. I'd seen it as, "Why destroy a mall for a kid worth only a few thousand dollars?" But really it was, "Why did you cause MILLIONS of dollars in damages when the ransom was a much smaller amount?"
@@Chanteuse66 That's basically the same question. The ransom is for the kid's life, which is being compared to the mall's damages. Plus, the reporter specifically said "to rescue a girl". If you're saying that the ransom should've just been paid then you're putting a lot of faith on the criminals to actually return her safely.
How did you come up with that, out of genuine curiosity? I don’t ever remember seeing his age on here. That seems legit, though. He looked late 30s/early 40s when he was frozen. That’s interesting, nonetheless. Nice fun fact.
and now i want a batman film with Wesley Snipes as joker thank you very much, heck i even think you could get stallone again, he'd probably make for a pretty good batman/Bruce Wayne
Legend has it , they didn't use any of the scripted scenes snipes did, they just let the cams roll after the scenes were over and didn't tell snipes......
My favourite part of this film is when the police officer says with a thoroughly offended look on his face '... maniac has responded with a scornful remark!'. Makes me laugh even now.
Wesley Snipes did serve time for income tax evasion. In fact, it was brought up in the movie The Expendables 3, where Snipes was asked what he was in prison for, and he replied, "tax evasion" lol.
@@Waterford1992 not sure how tax law works, but the judge did give him three years in a federal prison. After that he was just making straight-to-DVD flicks.
@@pablom-f8762 I believe his argument was that since the money was earned outside of the United States, he thought he didn't have to pay taxes on the movies he made outside of the US...
The craziest thing is that this movie's vision of the future seems less and less stupid every year. Snipes and Stallone do so well to act as a sort of Batman and Joker. Hell, if there's ever a chance, I bet Snipes would play a fantastic twist on Joker.
ANd your parents made all that happen, by voting for LIBERALISM....Liberalism that was already infected with MARXISM in the 60s , in america and now this is the result of over 50 years of *CULTURAL MARXISM.* The only thing that is missing from the movie is the ANTI WHITE RACISM and HETERO WHITE MALE HATE that gets promoted 24/7 today.

I can only imagine some kind of scooping action combined with a little scraping. But then what/ Do you have to wash them or just throw them away? Who would replace them? They're made of metal! Those things are valuable. This thing gets very complicated.
Demolition Man is often dismissed as a cheesy action film but it showcases a respectable depth. Unlike the dreary war torn dystopias of the 80s and 90s, this film offers a glimpse of sleek, clean, comfortable dystopia in which every aspect of life is controlled and individuality and liberty are suppressed in the name of safety. It's essentially a future in which PC culture has reached its logical extreme. The film is far more relevant now than when it was released.
It's shocking to me how much they got right while also getting it so wrong. mostly because they can't predict the exact shape of the technology when it gets here.
I love how the future is partially based off of Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. Plus, the female leads are both named Lenina and you have John Spartan instead of John the Savage.
This is another of my most-watched films. I watched it a bunch when I was a kid. I still find myself using references like "no free rides" even today. Wesley Snipes must have been enjoying himself immensely. He steals the show out from under Sly. It scares me when I see shadows of that society emerging, people dumbed down to the point they are too stupid to know any better.
Demolition Man is one of my favorites. Definitely a cult classic. The little girl telling the reporter to F off is great. @1:38 Looks like 2020 to me. Cities burning, criminals taking over parts of cities. @10:48 The three sea shells is a massive meme. @21:12 Plot twist, Spartan and Phoenix were the original donors used for the Storm Trooper clones.
About Schwarzenegger presidential, this movie came the same year as Last Action Hero, there you can see the other side of the joke. Arnold 4th wall breaker with Die Hard director and Lethal Weapon writer. Edit: All reunited years after Predator
Don't forget that Blane (Jesse Ventura) from Predator is also in Demolition Man, as the cryo-con who killed Cocteau. Coincidentally both Schwarzenegger and Ventura became US state governors years later. I love how stuff ties into other stuff.
I remember in this year i started hearing about Schwarzenegger thinking about politics. What happens between this two movies is more the rivality and friendship between them. The Stallone in the othe movie is something different 🤣🤣
Another fun fact. In the US market, all restaurants are Taco Bell. Outside the US market all restaurants are Pizza Hut, which is actually the same company but Taco Bell is not well known outside the US. Also I remember Taco Bell ran a major ad campaign featuring that scene at the time.
I saw that version, the actors re-read everything from Taco Bell to Pizza Hut in post-production but it doesn't look very good on film, you can read their lips saying Taco Bell but you hear Pizza Hut, it's kinda funny. And the superimposed Pizza Hut logo does look a little off, it's easy to see the TB logo was covered up.
My favorite part of the movie is the offensive language fine machine that chimes in every time someone swears, many times very subtle in the background.

One of Wesley Snipes' best performances as a villain, loved him in this and I think he stole the show!! You should check him out in New Jack City as a drug Kingpin of NYC.
Anybody remember scenes from 2020 of cops not being allowed to fight back? This movie goes from accurately predicting tech like self-driving cars, to parodying everything in this weird US of today, including police not 'allowed to' meet force with force. Here in Ohio, the shooting of a girl in mid stab is criticized: should have spoken to her with 'a firm tone of voice'
Actually, we know how to employ force correctly (backed by both statistics and science), it's just US police force doesn't have the culture for it and hasn't been trained for it.
Wow! One of my favorite action movies ever! But I just realized I like it so much better and appreciate it so much better now than I did when it came out in the theater. Amazing reaction! I always love it when you watch things get blown up. Lol! I grew up watching westerns and Clint Eastwood and Sylvester Stallone and Schwarzenegger. The part about him being president even before you became governor oh my goodness gracious. Made my day!
And it was reasonably well known at the time too from many movie/show/music references and I don't live anywhere near California. It made me smile a bit when the cops didn't know it but many of us in the theatre did.
Demolition Man is so underrated. A great movie and my favourite Stallone movie apart from Rocky and Rambo. And I like the references to the novel Brave New World. :) For a good Wesley Snipes movie to watch, I recommend New Jack City. Also a very underrated movie in my opinion.
I was thinking the exact same thing. I'm surprised I didn't greet each other by bumping elbows or that they all didn't wear masks. Awesome movie! I forgot Benjamin bratt was in this movie. Lol! Writing was awesome! I think I appreciate this movie a lot more now than I did when it came out
I thought it was beyond stupid when it came out, but they Jules Verne-ed the f*** out of this age. The only thing I remember liking was Snipes' joyously mad performance and Bullock-not her character, just her. But they basically nailed some of the tech and parodied our times perfectly
@@porkfrog2785 most of the tech was future concept from major manufaturer at the time. Like world fair stuff. Self drivning cars have been tested since the 80tys. This is one of those movies that I always found to be a turn off your brain and have fun flick. It’s scary how much of the funny stuff became kind of true in today’s society.
I totally agree. This society is increasingly getting comfortable with the government, taking away and control every aspect of their lives, based on fear.
@@erikjohnson3859 taking away your right to be an "asshole" (cancel culture). NO weapons (people in government trying to take away your 2nd amendment right to bear arms). All these things were pushed in the movie because of people's fear of death, something that is going on now.
Weirdly, with all that is going on, I reference this movie all the time. It is like the writers and director read the Bible and made the events secular.
the movie that predicted PC Culture . Stallone got this by luck I feel. Snipes is awesome and there is a cut of this where all the food franchises are Pizza Hut because Europe has no Taco Bell
Wtf is PC Culture? Is this the same thing that white supremacist Tucker Carlson whines about? Way to out yourself like that. God forbid you suffer consequences for saying deplorable things, huh?
I had to stop and come back to this a little later because my three year old needed me, but I've watched it now. Your reactions to the dialogue especially are priceless. It was great to see you throwing your head back with laughter again and again. If I had the spare money, I'd have hit your Patreon up immediately upon finding your channel. Maybe one day if my fortunes change. Thank you so much for sharing your reactions to these movies with us!
Pause at (10:39). Back then in 1993, all the talk was about Sandra Bullock's pants. It's like, Women are going to wear those tight pants in the future? (Yes they are...)
When Spartan is asked about the hostages at the beginning, he says he did a thermal scan. It only showed Phoenix's goons. To him it meant the hostages weren't there. In reality they where, but already dead, hence no heat reading. Very well written movie. One of my favorites! Thanks for reacting to it!

I Really recommend Cliffhanger probably Stallones Best Movie after The Rocky Movies, Demolition Man is his best sci fi film. And Snipes is a great villain.
I always loved the line, "C'mon Hal, where the God damn guns?!" Nice reference to 2001: A Space Odyssey. This film is full of little details like that.
Sandra Bullock steals every scene, she's both hilarious and adorable. If you haven't seen it watch the 1975 "Death Race 2000" (the original) for an early role by Stallone. It had an interesting take on the future of the U.S. In 1989 he made a buddy cop picture with Kurt Russell called "Tango & Cash". This was an imperfect utopia with lack of violence and a lot of restrictions. Another such film is "Equilibrium" starring Christian Bale in which all stimulus to violence has been outlawed. Well worth seeing.
now this is a reaction I been waiting for! I use Simon's comment in todays world when I talk to PK people etc, You can't take away peoples right to be asholes. I think this line is kinda deep in a way. Like when people get offended in todays world. And im afraid we will go toward a world like this and its not good.
The explosion in the beginning was used in the marketing of the movie, where they claimed it was the biggest on-set explosion in movie history. I think the just barely edged out Lethal Weapon 3. So yes, that is a full scale building collapsing. For a while back there, it seemed as if every time building was scheduled to be demolished, they contacted movie companies to see if anyone needed an explosion. Not really recycling, but at least repurposing.
great 90's popcorn movie. Was a lot of fun to see it in the theater back then. Audiences were into it and it was a perfect cheesy action movie from the time period.
They really blew that god damn building up. As I remember it, it was slated for demolition (heh) so the filmcrew was able to procure it, use it for an on-set location and then blow it up themselves. There really is nothing quite like a real practical explosion, I understand the practicality and cost and safety of a CG explosion now but nothing will ever look quite as good - even if they just blow up miniatures (I think of Independence Day) it still just looks so much better than CG explosions. I love this movie - it's completely and totally aware of what it is and is very tongue-in-cheek but it's just crazy how much of the technology (and even a few exaggerated parts of social development) have come true - I live in an area where you can order a self-driving uber ride and see them driving all over and it's just second nature now. iPads, AI assistants, VR, so on and so forth. So cool. I believe this was originally envisioned to be a movie starring Steven Seagal and Jean Claude Van Damme, with Van Damme playing Simon Phoenix, but Van Damme wanted to be the hero and it ended up just not working. Also Fred Dekker (who directed awesome teen-horror movies Monster Squad and Night of the Creeps) did some script rewrites on this one - I think he was the one that decided to open in 1996 as opposed to opening in the future. I also think there were about a million changes with other writers and a ton of edits demanded by the studio to make it more family friendly and less violent, go figure. At one point I think the intention was to make Huxley the daughter of John Spartan, but then that was scrapped, and then it was going to be one of the girls in Edgar Friendly's crew, and then they just dropped it altogether. Somewhere out there between the various scripts and the various cut footage lies some sort of sad and tragic post-apocalyptic Brave New World-esque "utopia that really isnt" where John Spartan is a fully tragic character who mimics John The Savage from the book (and I have to believe that was the original intention considering the name of Sandra Bullock's character), but I'm still pretty happy with what we got. In a weird way I think this movie is kind of a mirror for Waterworld - both futuristic movies in worlds with some sort of cataclysm, both starting as darker action vehicles that due to studio interference change the tone completely - the difference is somehow Demolition Man ends up working anyway, whereas Waterworld suffered for it all. Good stuff Shan.
Good on you for picking this one up. A culty little favorite of mine. I remember the snooty critics with their nose in the air always going on and on about how Stallone couldn't do comedy, but this movie wasn't only funny, it was a little prescient.
This film is great in showing the downsides of two extremes while also being quite fun. Like Spartan say's at the end, total chaos and total control are not any sane mans ideal, you have to be willing to find the right balance between them and accept the nuances of a situation. Ironically some anti-PC types love referencing this film for it's social commentary but ignore that bit. Typical, really but thats a whole other argument.
Glad you reacted to demolition man, for me it's one of the classics of the 90' science fiction. So many movies were able to mix nice action with smart questions about society and the future, this one is a good exemple that has aged very well, definitly better than others.
I think the cheesy dialogue works so well because the world is depicted as cheesy, so it all feels so grounded and appropriate. And the film as a whole doesn't take itself too seriously even if it gestures toward what would otherwise be serious concepts. Still love this movie after twenty plus years.
I love Wesley Snipes, this villain character he played was memorable, but I love him from other roles like in Undefeated I believe. He is so convincing with his fighting, I love it!
Please keep reacting to Rocky series and Rambo series also other Stallone movies like: The specialist, assassins, Tango and Cash, Cliffhanger, Over the top, what else??
Has anyone seen Rhinestone? Lol! I have to say that is one of the cheesiest but one of my guilty pleasure movies. Lol! You haven't lived life until you see Sylvester Stallone singing country music at a honky tonk
Yes, the building was really blown up. It was in Louisville, KY, just a short trip up the highway from where I lived on Ft Knox at the time. Knowing that, of course I had to see this in the theater.
The building destroyed at the beginning was an actual condemned building that was scheduled for demolition, the producers contacted the city and essentially said "let US do it for you."
This was a surprise! I loved Demolition man back in the day :) Knowing that you liked it I'd like to suggest Soldier, with Kurt Russel. Not because it's a classic, but I really want to hear your opinion on the story. Btw, this film made me fall in love with Sandra Bullock!
The choice to keep Hucksley out of the final fight WOULD have been highly criticized these days. Lol. You got that right bud! Still a great choice to do so to me. Glad you got to review this film. If you want another good 90's action movie... I would suggest the long kiss goodnight staring Gens Davis and Samuel L Jackson! It's a hidden gem in my opinion and I'm sure you would enjoy it as a great action comedy! 😉
"I want you to do everything in your power to snare this agent of destruction" You read between the lines, Shan! That is exactly what a higher-up says, when they want to escape personal responsibility, and create a scapegoat.
Great popcorn move! I've seen it numerous times. Sandy is great as a guide to the new future. Love the black uniform. Weirdly accurate about many things. Political satire as well. Numerous allusions to Aldus Huxley's Brave New World.
I know I'm late to the party, but great reaction and review. I love this silly movie. I even have it on VHS somewhere. It never fails to amuse and entertain. The fact that this is one of Denis Leary's and Sandra Bullock's earliest film appearances always makes me smile. And if you're looking for an out there Denis Leary Christmas movie, if you have not seen it try The Ref. It's an absolutely hilarious dark comedy. And, IMO, one of his best. The building that explodes in the beginning was an actual building the film was allowed to demolish. That’s why it looks so great, and that’s as practical of a film explosion as you can get.🤘🏼
I saw this in the cinema when it first came out. I and a few school mates had decided to go to the cinema but we ddn't decide what to watch until we got there. We flipped a coin to choose. It was this or Honey I Married An Axe Murderer. Lucky escape.
Great reaction Shan! Effectively, this is a cheesy movie but the fact that its own universe holds itself makes it work. It does the same with comedy, it is well aware of itself without falling into a parody. Simon Phoenix is also a great villain ahah
I think I remember in the DVD special features it was said that the building in the opening was a old waterworks building scheduled for demolition by implosion. That's only my memory
This was among the great action movies of the 90s. It was Sandra Bullocks coming out party, and elevated Wesley Snipe's status. Denis Leary had used his "borrowed" comedic act to get the role as Edgar Friendly.
How they work was once revealed by Stallone in a 2006 interview, explaining that a writer told him '...you hold two seashells like chopsticks, pull gently and scrape what’s left with the third.' It's hard to say if such a technique would actually work in reality, which is to say nothing of how the shells themselves would be cleaned after usage. On reflection, it's easy to see why Demolition Man didn't explain how they work - or even worse, showed how they function.
18:14/15 - You can see Jack Black when he was in his early 20s standing in between Spartan and Friendly just outside of the circle you are in. 23:34 - He's credited as one of the "Wasteland Scraps" on the end credits.
In the US release Taco Bell won the restaurant war but in the UK it was changed to Pizza Hut. Not sure if you noticed but both Spartan and Phoenix mentioned that they dreamed during cryo.
Woah, weird. I just watched this last night. Hadn't seen it in quite a while. The predictions in this were pretty on point considering it was made almost 30 years ago. Loved your reaction for it too. Very genuine and you seemed as giddy as I was the first time I saw it in theaters.
One of my favorite pieces of cut content from this film involves John Spartans daughter. In the original cut of the film before its edit they end up running into his daughter and it turns out she is a scrap she lives in the underground rejecting the surface. When John and Friendly are talking in that garage barish area when they get shot at for a brief second you see John lift a table and push a girl behind him, that's John's Daughter. They cut the scenes with her for time I just wish there was an uncut or director's cut version of the film.
