@@HarryBalzak Definitely but I think its more than that. He could tell Cocteau was lying about his having released Spartan intentionally; if he had, the guy wouldn't have caught up with him and nearly captured him so easily. All of this implied that the guy wasn't nearly as in control of the situation as he believed himself to be not to mention that he couldn't afford to brainwash too many other guys or he'd be discovered.
One Psychopath with experience of manipulating people vs a genuinely predatory psychopath with extensive experience of violence, criminality and manipulation. The idiot even trained him further, making him far more dangerous.
@@elnombredelarosa3167 Psychopaths ignore conventional morality, the difference between a psychopath and sociopath is that the sociopath generally does not go out of their way to purposely manipulate people and just do whatever pleases them in a way that's totally self absorbed and doesn't see or care for the harm they cause in their pursuit of amoral or immoral goals. They generally lack long term planning as well, they live very much moment to moment. Psychopaths generally have a greater tendency towards machiavellianism, even when it isnt quite at the degree of the separate machiavellian trait and are usually much more aware of the harm they cause and simply don't care and even consider it before they act or plan. Worse is when they trend towards a Sadistic Personality Disorder with this, I would say Phoenixes taunting of his victims shows he is on the spectrum of those traits too though Sociopaths can have that trait as well. Hes a poster child of the Dark Triad altogether really.
2:09 notice when Cocteau yells "just do your job!" how Phoenix's demeanor changes completely. He instantly goes from being goofy and laid back to utterly menacing. Cocteau got too comfortable being his high and mighty self he forgot he was dealing with an absolute psychopath

We see in this scene the singularly most important sentence of the movie. 4 words is all it takes to completely unravel cotco’s empire. “Take care of it”. He delegates a critical task to someone who was clearly not capable of executing it correctly and brought back Phoenixes gang without the critical no kill command.
@@number3stunner118 He hadn't done many movies prior to this, mostly stage and British TV. Like most British actors of his generation, he felt many big time American actors hadn't earned their bones by doing extensive theater work. Also, even back then Snipes and Stallone could be difficult to work with.
What I always found interesting is this sentiment has really died down to obscurity since nowadays many prominent actors tend to respect eachother overall, at least between the extremely gifted/talented regardless of past experience or "official theatre experience".
Makes sense he would. Likely stole it off a scrap he killed. Probably was terrible armor wise, but Phoenix probably preferred the look to his simple plane shirt and overalls.
@@ComicalHealing good point. The city dwellers always consider the scraps to be subhuman and lacking serious intelligence. Clearly their arrogant prejudices were sorely off about the scraps capabilities.
You would think that villains wouldve learned their lesson: Never release/unfreeze/animate and send the psychopath to do the job. Wesley Snipes was perfect for Phoenix. Hollywood better not never remake this.
The attention to detail in this movie is great. They make a big joke out of the machines giving out fines for swearing, but every scene after that you can hear the machine beeping in the background every time someone swears if you listen closely. Even in scenes like this, which isn't meant to be a comedy scene.
The movie doesn’t really explain how the cryo rehab works, but we can safely assume that you can’t just add to it and have it finished overnight. It probably takes a long time. Both Phoenix and Spartan were frozen for decades before being defrosted. Raymond’s was around for years still before then. He had plenty of time to alter Phoenix’s rehab and have it take affect.
@@ExploreGamesAndMore fair ... which reinforces my latter choice -- cocteau simply felt simon wuld not 'outsource' &/or cops wuld sumhow apprehend & re-freeze simon directly afta simon killed edgar /shrug
Cocteau wanted the underground dead, so they can't do anything to the "perfect" society he created. And if Phoenix can cause some chaos, so much the better. His chaos will have people running scared and looking for a solution, and he provides that solution, and gains even more control than he has now. And he plans to put Phoenix back in the freezer once his job is done.
why not use a light switch. did you miss the point of the movie. "if people outsource their individual determination to machines and governments they become useless"
This feels quite chilly. Reception. His double speak is spot on about todays society. We live in a world so full of double speak and lies that we fail to decern the truth about the matter. They were telling us in our face the truth and we just couldn't see it. The ballent lies that is.
Cultural Marxism is all about double-speak and the media loves doing it! They also love manipulative language and words like 'may', 'could' when talking about how offensive words are. 'Progressive' is the opposite for example.
@@Ragitsu You're too low IQ to notice the many around you all the time I guess. There's only 2 kinds of people that promote garbage; naive and sinister. Which are you?
That was already a given. Shit, somewhere in here there's also an all seeing eye. The Taco Bell is a dead giveaway now that they've come out with their Illuminati ad. This was also predictive programming for Wesley Snipes going to prison. They knew they had to do that or the shock would be too great and we'd all make tire armor for ourselves and bust him out.
You know what’s crazy about it? Alexa is exactly like the tech they have, she’s always listening which is pretty creepy, shit I don’t even trust Siri cuz I know she’s listening, and with that same tech the government can listen to every convo we have like the time the cops used Alexa to solve a murder case the cops realized Alexa was in the house they replayed the audio it had on record and solved the case or some shit like that

2:09 a the fire behind Dr Raymond Cocteau is a subtle foreshadowed of him getting shot and thrown into the very fireplace behind him.
I think Raymond's largest mistake was unfreezing Simon Phoenix. The guy was ambitious and highly intelligent. He would have been better off unfreezing some competent yet low IQ hitman.
Phoenix was actually standing up for what's right by having him killed. I wonder if he still would have, and so quickly, if he hadn't heard him plan to become a dictator who wouldn't let people be themselves.
I cannot remember this movie at all as it seems, I only remember Stallone eating a rat burger, and a lot of Pizza Hut, without Pizza's , and the fines they get for cursing.
He had no plan for what to do about Phoenix if he became a problem (when he knew he was literally thawing him so that he'd be a problem). I mean, what was he going to do, shoot Phoenix himself?

I like how he doesn't want any mad dog killer types because that makes sense. What makes it funny is how he also doesn't want anyone from New York working with him lol.
This movie was of course years before that happened, so it's basically another prediction that it got right. And the restaurants are closing, so I hope everybody likes Taco Bell.
he shouldn't have given Simon so much that he could end up breaking through the security of his own place. just enough to do the job. he didn't need all that to get the job done. he was way over qualified.
Simon’s assignment was to killed Egar Friendly from the members Scraps. Before he dares to precipitate San Angeles, California. That is why Phoenix been rehabilitated.
Dr. Cocteau decided to take Phoenix’s society and turned into his society of peace, loving and understanding. Quite frankly Simon’s gang members didn’t like it at all.
It was a good casting choice to get Nigel Hawthorne for the part. Leaving aside his acting skills he was already well versed in satirical 'politics' from his time as Sir Humphrey on Yes Minister. Heck you could say that since the 'civil service' by default wants things to run smoothly with no 'revolutionary ideas' creeping in this is just Sir Humphrey if he decided to be fully in charge of society and not have to deal with politicians. The administrators always want a minimal level of disturbance ie anything potentially bad is regulated. Ie the society we have here.
Phoenix said I wouldn’t want to defrost none of them mad dog killa types and definitely none of them muthafuckas from New York they to uptight being a New Yorker that shit made me laugh
