Demolition Man was one of my favorite movies as a kid. I even had the videogame on Sega Genesis. Came to RU-vid looking for clips from the movie and found this. I know what I'm eating for lunch today. Thirty years later, this commercial just inspired me to go get a burrito supreme, nachos, and a large drink. If only I could still get the poster.

Yet I still remember my Dad and I going to Taco Bell one night to get this meal ("Burrito supreme" is what triggered my mermories) and poster. My Dad had that poster on the wall in his man cave for years. Oh the good 'ol days.

In spite of the script maybe not holding water 100% at every single point, the production being sort of messy, and the timeskip being generously brief considering how radically different the future is (probably should have just said it was 60 years or something), I do think that Demolition Man is a satisfying movie. The action is great, the sets and props are all very good, the humor and satire is honestly great (some of it timeless), and the characters, especially Wesley Snipes as Simon Phoenix (one of my favorite movie villains), are just really entertaining and fun. The movie got shat on by critics at the time, and had weak box office performance, so I'm very glad it gradually got the appreciation it deserves thanks to decades of home video and TV airings. It's not flawless, but it is by no means bad, and it's remembered for good reasons.

I was about 4 or 5 when the movie came out and don't really remember the marketing. Plus I was more in kids' channels that wouldn't really market something like this movie and I was more into kids' stuff (plus Batman/superheroes), but this commercial makes me want to go back to the 90's. I think it's just nostalgic for me, although I don't recall the movie's marketing because I got to witness a lot of other movies throughout the 90's be marketed in a similar way and have fast food tie-ins (Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Batman & Robin, The Power Rangers movie, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, and Space Jam for sure (I remember Batman Returns, although it was a year before Demolition Man because that was more kid friendly and the marketing was more widespread because it was simply Batman, plus my parents took me to McDonald's during the marketing and got me all the Happy Meal toys before the backlash started and McDonald's pulled/canceled the movie's tie-in marketing)). Movies aren't marketed like this anymore. And when they are, it's just Happy Meal toys at McDonald's. But no contests and movie themed cups and containers/holders for fries or special meals/menu items. Plus commercials. I really would like to go back to this "fun" when it comes to a movie's marketing. Movies are no longer events now.

I’m writing this in 2024. Actually just happened to me. I hadn’t been to a Taco Bell for about 6 years. The other night, I for some reason wanted some Taco Bell. The drive thru was backed up so I decided to walk in and order at the counter (or so I thought). I walked in and the place was relatively empty. Two younger college aged kids sitting at a table over in the corner and an older lady sitting at a table near the door I walked in. No one in line. There was a teenage boy standing behind the counter. I thought he was the cashier/counter attendant. He didn’t say a word. I stepped to the counter and immediately noticed there was no cash register. Kind of confused me but maybe it was beneath the counter. I then looked up to the menu board but to my surprise there was no menu. Instead where the menu board once stood, there were just pictures of Mexican cuisine. Not Taco Bell type of food but real Mexican cuisine. Again, this was confusing so I asked the young man behind the counter where the menu board with the combo meal and prices were. He just looked at me like I had a third eye and third nipple or something. He didn’t say a word. He just pointed behind me to a kiosk. I stood there confused. I said yeah, I’d like a Burrito Supreme Combo meal, make the taco a hard shell and a large Dr. Pepper. He just looked at me and pointed behind me to the kiosk. I stood there confused and by this time was getting rather frustrated. The young man stepped out from behind the counter and motioned for me to follow him to the kiosk. So I did. When he got to the kiosk, he tapped the screen and said there you go, and he walked away and retook his position behind the counter with no cash register. I stared at the screen for at least a couple minutes. My mind was now in full shut down mode. I started cussing under my breath thinking the whole time, I just want a fucking Burrito Supreme with a hard shelled taco and a large Dr. Pepper. After scrolling and tapping on the machine for another 5 minutes or so, I finally found the right screen with my selection. I tapped my selection and then didn’t know how I was going to pay. Did I do it at the kiosk or pay at the counter that didn’t have a register. I stood there dazed and confused while now cussing out loud as quietly as possible but it was still able to be heard by the young college aged kids in the front corner, the lady by the door I walked in and the teenage boy behind the counter. They all seemed very disturbed by my behavior. I looked at the boy behind the counter and just threw my hands up. He recognized my disgust and came out from behind the counter and didn’t say anything. He grabbed my credit card out of my hand and inserted the card into the machine and walked away. He returned to his place behind the counter. I finally finished the payment process at the kiosk and walked up to the counter hoping to get my cup so I could go to the fountain machine and get my Dr. Pepper. Instead of handing me my cup he just stared at me. Now I’m really pissed so I ask him rather loudly for my damn cup. He hands it to me like he’s scared of me. Like I’m some sort of savage caveman or something. I grab my cup and as I’m walking toward the fountain machine, I’m cussing. This fuck!ng place is bullish!t. I’m never coming back to this sh!thole again. Now everyone including the cook staff in the back is looking at me. I fill my cup still cussing. My order comes and I walk up and get it and go to my table. The whole time I’m eating I’m feeling a sense of dejavu. I can’t put my finger on it but I know I’ve experienced this situation before. Then it hits me. I have become John Spartan and Taco Bell is no longer the Taco Bell of the 1980s and 1990s. It has become some high tech fancy to do wannabe restaurant. I looked around and it is familiarly decorated like the year 2032 Taco Bell in Demolition Man. From what I can tell the only difference was there was no cussing machine that was monitoring my language. At least I didn’t hear anything saying, Kevin Rogers you are fined one credit for violating the verbal morality code. Pretty sure if I heard that, I was going to dislodge a table from the floor and throw it through the window or better yet across the front counter. As I was leaving I really wanted to go in the restroom and see if there were 3 seashells but by this time I knew I was never coming back to this establishment. I just hope in the next 8 years that all restaurants don’t become Taco Bells like it said in the movie. Pretty sure, if that’s the case, I will lose my sh!t and they’ll end up putting me in a cryogenic pod in the cryosphere. That’s probably not too realistic though because the taxpayers of Vigo County won’t approve the tax hike to update the jail.

I sure do. I'm 42. An 80s child and a 90s kid. When life was good. I still have the 4 issue X-Men comics that came with pizza from Pizza Hut. I never opened them. They're still in the plastic wrapping. I also still have the NBA Jam Session photo book that came with the pre-ordered game NBA Jam on Genesis from Toys R Us. It's surprisingly a very well made book that was free. If you like basketball you should check it out. I still have my NBA Dream Team tumblers from McDonald's. Bird, Pippen, Jordan, Magic, Ewing and Thomas. I also have the original Batman pin that was given at the box office to first day ticket buyers for Batman 89'. That was a happy Friday afternoon. I was 10 years old. Damn. Oh, Baskin Robbins did a MLB Opening Day promo. You got your ice cream in a mini batters helmet. I still have the Yankees, Royals, Expos, and Brewers.

@projectpat8807
@projectpat8807 8 месяцев назад
I don't think so. I want to say there was a few others I came across when I was looking up 80's and 90's nostalgia related commercial videos, especially commercials related to fast food restaurants that did movie tie-ins. I just can't remember which movies. But yeah. Majority of the ones that got fast food tie-ins were PG-13 and under. I want to say Demolition Man was the last R-rated one, although I want to say Judge Dredd was another one. But I want to say Demolition Man got through because Taco Bell thought it would be PG-13, but when it got the R-rating, it was too late. All the marketing stuff was put together and ready to go. So they had to go through with it. And it doe seem interesting this went through after all the backlash McDonald's got in 1992 for Batman Returns, which was PG-13. But I'd have to look into stuff further. I might be confusing the fast food marketing with toy commercials. I know they made toys for kids and had kids' commercials for a lot of R-rated movies related to those toys. Alien, Predator, Terminator, maybe Rambo, Demolition Man, and maybe Judge Dredd (I'm trying to think of what I saw down the action figures aisle when I was a kid (I'm a 90's kid)).

@projectpat8807
@projectpat8807 8 месяцев назад
I never got the hate for product placement. People complain about wanting more realism in movies. Well, here ya go. And come to my bedroom. "Product placement" everywhere you turn. I could write a wall of text of every brand you would see in my bedroom. The main one being Coca-Cola. So having real world products just adds realism to movies or even TV shows. The realism everyone demands more of in movies and TV shows. So I feel anyone complaining about product placement is a hypocrite. Plus can be used as an argument that no one will ever be pleased. It's a no-win no matter what.
