Demons: What the Bible Really Says About The Powers of Darkness | Dr. Michael S. Heiser

Are demons real? Are they red creatures with goatees holding pitchforks and sitting on people's shoulders while whispering bad things? Did a third of the angels really rebel with Satan? Are demons and "principalities and powers" just terms for the same entities, or are they different members of the kingdom of darkness? Is the world a chaotic mess because of what happened in Eden, or is there more to the story of evil?
What people believed about evil spiritual forces in ancient biblical times is often very different than what people have been led to believe about them today. And this ancient worldview is missing from most attempts to treat the topic.
In Demons, Michael Heiser debunks popular presuppositions about the very real powers of darkness. Rather than traditions, stories, speculations, or myths, Demons is grounded in what ancient people of both the Old and New Testament eras believed about evil spiritual forces and in what the Bible actually says. You'll come away with a sound, biblical understanding of demons, supernatural rebellion, evil spirits, and spiritual warfare.

I do appreciate Dr Heisers views. Whether I believe it or not isn't the point. It's how the writers thought and how it would have been understood that is most important.

@Jeff McLaughlin Having listened twice I can almost imagine Heiser to be right in form but not in function. That is to say there is more a celestial bent as opposed to a supernatural one. Like rulers, principalities and powers being the "invisible" strands that hold the universe together and used as a representation of the geopolitical mindset. Something like that lol.
@AnHebrewChild
@AnHebrewChild 3 года назад
@@Vina_Ravyn how about both / and? _Both_ celestial _and_ supernatural. I think if you checked out his 'Unseen Realm' you'd see that that he holds to both, or a sort of "correspondence view,:" namely, that humanity's hierarchies are correlative and reflective of the hierarchies of supernatural beings'. He draws this interpretive lens from a natural reading of passages like Ezekiel 27 to 33 and the latter chapters of Daniel, where figures like the "King of Assyria" and the "Prince of Persia," based upon varied descriptions of them, seem to speak of _both_ earthly human rulers _as well as_ supernatural beings (behind the throne) which animate them. "On earth as it is in heaven" or as some reframe it, "as above, so below." This interpretive flexibility is pretty rare honestly, tho you will find christian and secular scholars which seem to grasp it. In any case, it is *THE* thing I most appreciate about Heiser's approach. EDIT... Note: not merely applied to this subject, it's a refreshing way to look at things in many other spheres of life. It provides a nice 'defrag' for the brain which is constantly conditioned by media & public education & traditional religion to engage in scantron / binary thinking. But that's a whole 'nother subject.... 😊) cheers
@Vina_Ravyn
@Vina_Ravyn 3 года назад
@@AnHebrewChild Yeah I dunno where the other comment went that brought that on. Let's just say when I read passages like the King of Tyre from Isaiah or the King of Babylon from Ezekiel I do not see a earthly vision switch to a spiritual one. I wasn't raised christian (agnostic) so many of the "norms" that christians or whomever hold to certain passages I don't see. It seems to be reading things into the text that aren't there. Wishful thinking? I'm not sure but what I get is that when we understand the mindset of the writers things become clearer. But I'm not even sure what we consider supernatural wasn't totally natural for them. We imagine them to be supernatural but maybe they were just as much flesh and blood as we are. The ideas and principals behind their thinking are more what I would consider "otherworldly" as ideas have no "body" principals have no physical form. These are concepts and those are what I would consider to be "supernatural". If that even makes sense I'm not sure how to explain. If you are familiar with the word egregore - that is basically a thoughtform -like say the thoughtform of Jesus as savior of mankind becomes more important than whether or not it is actually true or not. It makes itself true by taking on a life of it's own. That to me is otherworldly - ideas that spring into life and influence the masses beyond their originator. Anyway not sure if that makes sense but that's where my head is at. : )
@Vina_Ravyn
@Vina_Ravyn 3 года назад
@@AnHebrewChild Or this - we personified what we didn't understand to make sense of it. These personifications became what we call the supernatural world and they do hold power because ideas, concepts & principals are much larger and more far reaching than just our temporary physical form. The idea of justice is beyond a 70 year life. Justice doesn't die like a physical life does. If that makes a lick of sense. LOL ; p

Dr. Michael Heiser is not where I’m at currently, and probably not where most of your listeners are Derek Lambert, but he does in fact represent a major evolution in the current growth of Evangelicalism. He is teaching stuff that I was being labeled as a heretic two decades ago when I was studying at Philadelphia Biblical University (i.e. Cairn University), and he has made these ideas acceptable for many, including some of my former professors such as Dr. Brian Toews and Dr. William Krewson. It is true that he has a Fundamentalist bias in regard to the biblical text, acknowledging lesser but not greater textual criticism, and that he often distorts the extra-biblical sources such as the Ugaritic texts of the Baal Cycle, et cetera, to fit into his own rigid reconstruction of the Divine Council doctrine, attempting to dismiss any actual notion of divine pluralism, but he is a true scholar, and he makes some good points in this podcast (when you press him and divert him from his normal talking points - that are becoming rather redundant now), and text critical scholars such as myself may need to re-examine some of our own biases in regard to, for example, his point about multiple text reconstructions in Palestine, Babylon, and Egypt during the era of the LXX: Septuagint, versus the later recension of the Masoretic Text?

It is amazing the vitriol in the comments here (not yours however). This alone fulfills Biblical prophecy doesn't it? Just wanted to say the one thing Michael was not is 'rigid'. I would call it 'evolving'. Like Chuck Missler always said, 'Don't take my word for anything, but do your own research and draw your own conclusions'. In spite of the plethora of current Biblical theologist, I certainly miss him.

There have been cases of such things, miraculous healings. The mind is a very poweful thing. hope someone finds this useful... How to know when you or others around you have unclean spirits (whisperers) Romans 1:29. Along with how to remove them. There are 5 distinctive signs to watch out for in order:- 1. No love for ALL people. (EVERYONE) (1 John 4:20) (1 John 2:10-11) (John 15:12). 2. Not following the 10 Commandments (Law) or equally get very frustrated along with showing contempt or a disdain, when advised that they have to follow them. They also feel led to attack another body (person) rather than destroy an argument with Logic and Love. (John 15:10) (Matthew 6:24) (1 John 2:4) (Matthew 5:19) (matthew 5:17) (2 Peter 3:14-17) (matthew 5:18) (Acts 24:13) (Luke 16:17) (1 Timothy 1:8) (Romans 13:1)((Romans 7:12) (Romans 7:7) (1 John 3:4)(Isaiah 33:22) (James 2:10). 3. Their vocabulary consists of the following 8 words that allow them to endlessly continue to drive you like a parasite does, by making false promises of change along with irrational arguing, debating in circles using said words. (matthew 5:37) think of it like an 8 on its side ∞ (infinity) endless loop. 4. Self harm, addictions to porn, drugs and or alcohol, Suicide, depression. gender disorders. 5.Oppression or domination. Satan restrains and keeps people in bondage. God never restrains he sets us free with free will. Their vocabulary consists the following words:- If = presupposes you may or may not. But = negates anything said in front of it and is reserved for goats and sitting on. Maybe = presupposes you may not. Would = infers guilt Should = infers guilt Could = attempt to take kudos for an imaginary story explained as the best way. Don't = encourages your listener to focus on the opposite thing to what you’d like them to do or think of. Try = isn’t doing anything, and your whisperers take it to be a green light to fail. They speak in YOUR VOICE (as a thought) It is like a constant tickle when they want something, they get louder and more persistant. They love nothing more than debate (hence the words given), or saying contempteous or hurtful comments. They argue very similarly to that of a small child. They have no body (disembodied spirit) so they drive the body the same way a parasite does without the car knowing to its heading towards destruction. There is normaly multiples of them ("rebellion""pride" "anger" "hate" "lust") They have done this for 1000s of years and know every tell and every weakness that people have, they've seen it all. How they get in is due to sin (Commonly "Pride" then "rebellion" of your parents) there is only one way to get them out, and one million ways to let them in. remove ALL sinful objects from your home (occult, porn, drugs,and such) fast for 3 days without sinning, on third evening, run a bath and ask the "Dear father Yahuah who is in heaven, please bless this water by the power of your amazing son Yahusha (Jesus), may it clense me, and deliver me from all unclean spirits and fill me with your holy spirit by his power. amen. splash water over head 3x, father, son, holy spirit, lay in bath 15-20 mins come out a new and filled with his holy spirit. It is then imperative that you then follow the law (10 commandments) Implicitly to avoid letting them back in, no different than cutting out food from a diet that was poisoning your life. when you wish for your pain to stop, READ AGAIN. I am not sure of the correlation yet i see and feel one, that being Jonas was in a whale for 3 days, Yahusha (Jesus) was in the tomb 3 days.so three days until renewed. The number three biblically represents divine wholeness, completeness and perfection. The number three was used to put a divine stamp of completion or fulfilment on the subject.(Corinthians 5:17)(Matthew 12:40) (Luke 24:46-47)(Corinthians 15:4)

Dr. Heiser is simply explaining that certain passages in the Old Testament which states “you are gods” is referring to created spirits in the council of God Almighty. The word Elohim is to be translated as “Spirit being living in the spirit world” Unfortunately, the word Elohim has been mistranslated to mean that the Bible is describing a pantheon of gods, but in reality it is not. Mr. Heiser correlated the fallens ones trying to prove Jesus is real and the son of God somehow and he also tried to prove the Gospels to be real. Unfortunately, the book of Enoch can not prove nothing about the Gospels. Why? because it is not given any cross reference about Jesus as the messiah predicted. The reality is the Gospel and the letters of Paul are contradictory and misquoting the Tanakah. So how can the NT writings have validation if the Tanakh is the not the foundation???

If God has a free will and he obviously does, how can we? The answer is that we can’t by virtue of the definition of the word “free”. The real question is, do we have a will at all?
@Timmeh_The_tyrant
@Timmeh_The_tyrant 2 года назад
Your logic doesn't follow. God having free will does not negate you having free will. Total unabated free will doesn't exist even for a God. Free will of any kind only exists within a functioning system.

Concerning Devarim/ Duet 32:8- "Elohim" is found 2602 times in the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh, Old Testament). It is not used in the Greek New Testament. The word is used for: the true God, false gods, supernatural spirits (angels), and human leaders (kings, judges, the messiah). The "-im" ending denotes a plural masculine noun. Most of the time, however, when the noun is used for the true God it has singular masculine verbs. This is contrary to rules of Hebrew grammar. When used of the true God, "Elohim" denotes what is called by linguists a plural of majesty, honor, or fullness. That is, he is GOD in the fullest sense of the word. He is "GOD of gods" or literally, "ELOHIM of elohim" (Deut 10:17; Ps 136:2). In the Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible (the Septuagint), where elohim refers to the true God, the singular theos is used. Genesis 1:1 Hebrew - "In the beginning, Elohim created the heavens and the earth." Genesis 1:1 Greek - "In the beginning, Theos made the heavens and the earth. The New Testament (which is in the same Koiné Greek as the Septuagint) does not have different words for or spellings of "God." That is, no singular or plural forms of theos. When the NT quotes passages from the Hebrew Bible or the Greek Septuagint that contain the word "God," it always has the singular noun. In the Hebrew Bible there are four words translated "God": El, Elah, Elo'ah, Elohim. The oldest Semitic word meaning "God" is El. Linguists believe its base meaning is strength or power. "El" is the Strong One or the Deity (God). It occurs 238x in the Bible, and is first used in Genesis 14:18 in the phrase "God Most High" [El Elyon]. The Canaanites called their chief deity El, the Mighty Bull. After the Israelites entered Canaan, they adopted this generic word "El" for their God, though "Elohim" took precedence. In some Canaanite myths, one of El's sons was the notorious Ba'al, the nemesis of the true God throughout much of Israel's history. (Read that verse in context with the surrounding verses,' Hint' 32:9 - sons of Jacob,ect. His book's will take us on a long trip' chasing down the "Nuggets" Thanks Derek!

Genesis 1:1 Hebrew - "In the beginning, Elohim created the heavens and the earth." Genesis 1:1 Greek - "In the beginning, Theos made the heavens and the earth. Change the words created and made to separate or divide and you are on the right track. With the "death" of the cow horned Moses, El became the Ram with twisted horns. This was the precession of the equinox from Taurus to Aries. The breaking of the cosmic egg by the bull simply shifted to the ram.

Yeah this is total and complete nonsense, Elohim just means most high one it can refer to God but it doesn’t always, it also refers to angels, no Elohim and El or not the same thing that’s in etymological fallacy, and yes the term Elohim can be used to describe other gods and it is but not in the same sense Yahweh, no Elohim and yahweh not distinct gods and Deuteronomy 32. El is a term that is used in the Hebrew Bible just to refer to God or Lord, no it is not the same as the god El, this is complete nonsense, Joseph Stalin Joseph Gordon Levitt i’m not the same person but they have the same name this is ridiculous. Also read Michael Heizer’s article on the subject he completely debunks this idea.

The vibe here from Derek was pretty antagonist and belittling. It really felt like he was trying to passively attack Dr. Heiser and quite unprofessional, in my opinion. There is an etiquette to approach guests with. It seemed like Derek took out his personal feelings against Theology and Religion out on his guest. Subsequent podcasts making fun of, poking and demeaning particular religious views, secular and otherwise, really highlight the Spirit behind this channel and its true agenda - those hidden and veiled.

Abraham worshipped the moon god Sin. Who had its cult center in Ur and Harran, exactly where Abraham travelled. "Sīn /ˈsiːn/ or Suen (Akkadian: 𒂗𒍪 EN.ZU, pronounced Su'en, Sîn) or Nanna (Sumerian: 𒀭𒋀𒆠 DŠEŠ.KI, DNANNA) was the god of the moon in the Mesopotamian religions of Sumer, Akkad, Assyria and Babylonia. Nanna is a Sumerian deity, the son of Enlil and Ninlil, and became identified with the Semitic Sīn. The two chief seats of Nanna's/Sīn's worship were Ur in the south of Mesopotamia and Harran in the north. A moon god by the same name was also worshipped in South Arabia." Very likely Abraham was some kind of priest of the Sin cult. His wife Sarai literally means : "'Sarai' is Sarratu', a name current in the country of Haran for the wife of Nannar (Sîn) the Moon-God." At some point Abraham's group/cult split between the Isaacites and the Ishmaelites. The Ishmaelites went into the desert of Paran, which is later called 'The wilderness of Sîn' because the Ishmaelites kept on worshipping this god. While the Isaacites took on Abraham's new god. This may have been the cause of the split in the first place. The whole sacrifice story may have been about this split. The problem is that the Bible only tells things from the Isaacite point of view. Since they became the Jews and created the Bible as we know it. The Ishmaelites however spread to the east and south and kept existing until Muhammad's time. The Sabians of Harran worshipped Sin until deep into the 6th century CE. They still performed circumcision, had 'Jewish' dietary laws, and their own form of Abrahamism based on the moon god Sin. They also had their own versions of Biblical stories up until Moses (Which they claimed was one of them). Everything after Moses seems to be copied and added from random sources by Muhammad because we know these stories were written much later as fiction. Like Salomon having a magic ring, a flying carpet, and ability to talk to animals. And for example young Jesus blowing life into pidgeons, which comes from the Youth Gospel of Thomas. Muhammad was very likely one of the Ishmaelites (a claim he did all the time in the scriptures) but started his own "up to date version" which included prophets from after Moses and called it Islam. That is also why we find Quranic texts from before Islam existed. And why Uthman burned all documents which he claimed were "corrupted Quranic texts". They were not corrupted. They were just pre-revelation texts. And not needed anymore. Only what Muhammad revealed was the 'truth' and needed. Muhammad did exactly the same thing as Paul and allowed 'gentiles' in his version of the Ishmaelite sect which also gave him an upper hand over the original sect. The reason he let gentiles join may have been because he was not recognized as a prophet by his fellow Ishmaelites and had to flee for his life to Medina with his family and few followers. The only way to grow was by letting non Ishmaelites join. This is also why the Kaaba is so holy. It is literally a 'moonstone' from Sin (a meteorite). Though hadith texts indicate that the gentile Muslims did not really understand why Muhammad ordered to worship it and not any other idols. They did not have the deeper knowledge of Ishmaelism and it's history, only whatever Muhammad transmitted to them. And Muhammad likely killed or forcibly converted the other Ishmaelites. Note that Muhammads only miracle was to split the moon. And Ramadan also has to with moon states. This is also why the Isaacites in following passages in the Bible put so much emphasis on "being descended from Abraham through Isaac" Now I personally think there is maybe more truth in Ishmaelism than in Isaacism. I don't think we should take the Bible as the absolute truth or standard of Abrahamism. Atleast the Ishmaelites knew were they came from. And did not write out or change stuff like the Isaacites to legitimize their (new) god since they just kept worshipping Abraham's original god. Though they may have changed other stuff ofcourse. The Isaacites were also heavily influenced by the Canaanites. With their god taking on names, features, and abilities of Canaanite gods. The Ishmaelites may have been influenced as well by other peoples, but did retain the original god. One thing that might be coincidental as well is the name Yahweh, which revealed himself as such to Moses and we only find in Isaacite scripture. Yah is also being the Egyptian moon god, which is also called Lah because in ancient Egyptian these letters were interchangable. In the Quran (and perhaps Ishmaelism) god simply calls himself Allah to Moses. And Allah simply meaning Al Lah (the (moon) God). And therefore Yahweh can mean the "the moon god (yah) of the land (weh)" meaning the land of Israel. Since IdHwh means marshlands in ancient Egyptian. Moses got really angry at the people making a calf. And the bull is also the animal of Sin since its horns represents the crescent moon.

A belief in ONE myth that they grew up in and deny the thousands of other myths created by ancient people. This is how religion works, everything that doesn't agree with some random bronze age superstition that I happen to like is wrong even though there is no proof of any of it and I'll agree so long as we are only talking about all the other made up superstitions, but how dare you point out my beliefs were also created by people who know nothing about the world around them and made up things just like everyone else in the time (or even in modern times). These same groups believed demons caused disease, we find out how they are really caused and they stop believing them (most do), but hey they were right about all the other things back then because my personal book says so. There is no honest introspection by people who are indoctrinated and refuse to analyze their own beliefs with the same rigor as they would any other persons beliefs, there is a reason why there are over 33 THOUSAND different Christian sects alone who don't agree yet all claim to be right and the others wrong, its nothing more than conformation bias. The replies to your own comment show this very thing. "You don't believe the same as me, you aren't open minded to MY myths and are evil because everyone else is wrong".
