Hey guys, been a while since my last 3s video. If you've any questions or want me to emphasize anything in future videos, just let me know in the comments.
I'm also trying out Zen controls (directional air roll mapped to triggers), and it's been super nice. Should have a video on that in the next month or so, once I feel like I've made enough progress mechanically.
As always, thank you for your support!

I love the way you explain the demo strats. Way too many people misunderstand demos and think things like "if the a demo/bump doesn't directly result in a goal then it's useless and toxic". It's great that you show that they can be an effective strategy for more than just clearing the net. I often will get demos in midfield when rotating back or pushing up and people say things like "learn when to demo" lol

Haha I don't think it'll catch on really. I think a lot of people just don't time into the vision and thought process that's required, and would prefer to only work on mechanics and basic rotation instead. It's proliferated at the pro level, though!

can you talk more about your camera settings? it's funny that you've gone full circle from your early videos years ago where you had the zoomed out camera, went away from it, and now are back. watching your POV compared to other players make it seem like a totally different game. Obviously it helps to have vision over the whole pitch, but do you find it hurts your mechs, especially precise touches, and aerials? The height/angle makes it seem harder for aerial plays, but I guess you've adapted to it. Would be interesting to see you play with meta settings for a bit to compare!
@Kevpert
@Kevpert Год назад
I will definitely do that! It is kinda funny how I came full circle, isn't it... #SatelliteCams I don't find it hurts my mechanics that much to be honest. Any mistakes I make right now are just from not enough practice, for the most part. I've been grinding mechanical training for 3 weeks and I feel like I'm improving a ton, so who knows where the skill ceiling is with these settings? If there's a reason to change when I feel limited by my camera, I'll do that. Don't see any reason right now though!

Hey @Kevpert, Hope life is well! I'm looking for some insight if possible. In your honest opinion, what truly elevates someone from GC to SSL, both in 1's, 2's, and 3's? Personally, I find this an interesting thought experiment because I was in the same position a long while back for GC. There was nothing I wanted more than that rank. I was obsessed. Fast forward to Season 14 (2020) before life happened, and, well, it happened. I managed to secure GC in 3's by playing with online friends that I've known for a long time. Looking back, it definitely helped with team cohesion, and things of that nature. Afterward, I bounced between friends/randoms to secure GC in 2's too. But, even then, I felt like I had imposter syndrome. It wasn't till I mained 1's, and snagged GC there that I overcame said mental hurdle. Felt like my skills could stand on their own. And I'll be blunt, it wasn't easy, lol. That said, I'm presuming once you're at this level, the fundamentals and small details matter so much more. Like positioning, boost management, etc. But with certain habits built, I know correcting them will be difficult. Would appreciate any advice. Thanks Kevpert! -AJ

Hey A J! Great question. I think there's 4 main things that separate an SSL from GC. 1. Be true to yourself. There's many ways to get to SSL, like copying others, or you can get there by your own style. My style was always tactical understanding, and using my experience and reading the game as a strength. I took bits from pros that I liked, such as Comm for Demos, Flakes for challenges, MonkeyMoon for defensive angles... but it always came to back to making me better tactically, which is my main strength. And to improve upon the consistency of my reads, I changed camera settings for more awareness. That's me, and 100% true to myself. For some people, that style might be aerial creativity, and you can see they seriously admire freestylers and strive to become like them. 2. Just enjoy the little bits of improvement. SSL or watching a pro like Zen is an excellent end goal. But getting there is the consequence of constantly looking to identify holes in your game (watching better players is important), and then tweaking your training and seeing what works. It's that improvement process at work. For me, that process is insanely fun, and I enjoy all the little steps forward that come with it. 3. Mix in critical thought. Critical thought is looking to truly understand something, by asking yourself the right questions. To give you an example, if I miss a demo on defense and we get scored on, critical thought would lead me down a line of questioning like: "Was it safe to demo? Yes, the ball was in the corner, there was no way anyone could score for 3 seconds..." "Ok, so if it was safe, then what mistake did my teammate make?" "Ah, he touched the ball unnecessarily and 50'd it middle to the opponent". Not thinking critically might lead me to think "It's ranked and my teammates are going to make mistakes, so I should always rotate back post to cover them". If you can't explain something, keymark it and figure out why in the replay. Hypothesize a little bit, and when you see that situation again, see if stands up to scrutiny. 4. Effort. It's just reps and grind! If you get tons of reps of asking yourself the right questions, you're going to improve a lot faster. Same thing goes for mechanics. Anyway, hope that helps!

I just tried Air Roll Left on L2 in Free Play to see what it was all about. And then I realized, damn, this is really nice for aerial control, and it wasn't as hard to do as I'd thought. It was so nice I rebound my air roll right + drive, and that definitely impacts my game in the short-term. But I think it's worth it! It's so fun to practice right now... it's a fun challenge, but I feel like the potential for control is ridiculously high.

@@Kevpert Interesting. I tried dynamic air roll myself and didn't see much of a benefit personally, actually more of a detriment. I use both directional air rolls pretty evenly in the air so "over air rolling" in one direction has never caused me issues, as I'll immediately correct it if I need to. I also often will use the opposite air roll to cancel my other air roll which allows me for very precise touches. I found that when I used dynamic air roll canceling air rolls wasn't as instantaneous which threw me off a lot. Switching air roll to L2 also means you can no longer break without air rolling, which is unfortunate because I sometimes use break during flip resets (btw do you know about this mechanic?) to help match my cars momentum to the ball. Those two disadvantages made me feel like it cancels out the advantage of being able to control the speed of your air roll. Maybe I'm on the wrong side here but I feel like Zen's dynamic directional air roll bind is way overhyped. I think for players who mainly just use on directional air roll would benefit from it a lot more though. However, I base my game on players like Nwpo and Oski who are basically ambidextrous in the air in terms of how they air roll. I also think Nwpo has the best overall car control in the game and he doesn't use dynamic air roll.
@Kevpert
@Kevpert Год назад
@GFC Hmm, that's an interesting perspective. I don't think I really had ambidextrous control of directional air roll (DAR) and I personally always felt I was missing precision with my aerials. I always had to ratchet up aerial sensitivity to high levels (like 4.0) so that air rolling felt natural, but then my non-air roll parts of the aerials felt way too sensitive. So that's why a lot of players just continously spin. One thing that's interesting with using it on triggers is that the lower your aerial sensitivity (Zen uses 1.5, I use 1.0), you'll have more control of how fast you spin. So I feel like I have tremendous control over all aspects of my aerial now, with or without air roll. If you aerial sens is high, there's practically no difference to just putting DAR on a button, as you'll hit max roll speed way faster. Anecdotally, braking through resets seems to make the ball stick more, but I honestly can't tell if there's a real difference. Would have to do some more research.
@GFC1337
@GFC1337 Год назад
@@Kevpert Interesting point with the aerial sensitivity, I did not experiment with that. When I was trying I was on 1.50 I believe. Also Zen himself said he doesn't take advantage of the dynamic input, maybe that's why. If I could get dynamic inputs that were not my L2/R2 triggers I would definitely consider making the switch. Not having a dedicated air roll bind is just such a big deal breaker for me though. However, if a young pro ever comes up like Zen who does use dynamic air roll in a very obvious fashion where it's clear it's meta changing I'll maybe consider switching. Also with breaking through resets, I'm like 99.9% sure it makes a pretty significant difference. I've been doing it for well over a year now. Maybe 40ish % of the time when going for resets. I implemented it into my game after reading a reddit post about it. Please experiment with it more and let me know your conclusion.
