Dence pack cellulose

I made this video to show how you can go to the big box store and rent the attic cat insulation blower and dence pack the walls in your house of shop or pole barn. You will need to rig up a hose with a reducer and tape off the opening with zip tape to restrict the flow of material coming out of the machine. the attic cat has a powerful blower and you need a lot of air with restricted material flow to get a good dence pack. This is in my opinion the best way to insulate your walls. I like spray foam in some applications but it is not a DIY project and if you need to renovate or repair a building it will be hard to do in the future. Dence pack cellulose is also a good air barrier unlike fiberglass that is virtually useless unless the air seal is perfect. any questions on how to set this up just comment and I will get back to ya.

That is basically how Owens Corning does it. Cellulose is a much better product when you use the right one. Looks like a job well done. Green fiber Sanctuary is the best product I have found from the big box stores for DIY projects. Easier to cut an X than a circle, keeps from coming back out. Should work well with a good quality Sheetrock for the best R-value.

I've heard that the blowers at some of the big box stores aren't capable of the 3.5 PSI that some places say that you should use for a good dense pack. Menards and home depot seem to have one, but the one at lowes don't seem to be capable. I'm not sure though. I'm looking at doing it for the first time.

It's great to watch you work - the real deal. I am surprised that there is no vapor barrier. Why? Do you always do this in two stages - partial fill, then full fill?
@bondobuilt386
@bondobuilt386 3 года назад
Andrew. Dence pack cellulose does not need an interior vapor barrier except the taped drywall with latex paint is sufficient. Air does not pass through it well unlike fiberglass so not much water vapor will enter the wall. the little that does will dry to the interior. We partial fill with the bigger hose to get alot in the wall quick then switch the machine to the small hoses to do the dence packing. Good questions bud. 👍👍

You could try it on a small section and see how it works. As long as the fibers stay in and the air can pass out it will work I'm thinking.

Hey Bondo, Great video like always. Quick question. if just blowing an attic loose fill cellulose do I need to block part of the gate off in the attic cat machine like you did? Been debating whether to rent the attic cat machine or a cellulose blower and keep hearing that the attic cat machines are better. Do you have any issues getting the regular cellulose bags into the attic cat blower when the blower has the fill port made to fit the attic cat bags (kinda funny shape)?
@christopherhaak9824
@christopherhaak9824 6 месяцев назад
If you are blowing loose, no need to block area. For dense pack, you need a higher volume of air to insulation. Some machines have an adjustable gate on them.

If you had done dense packed insulation to a cathedral ceiling, would it have to be ventilated?

Depending on what you do for roofing. I would vent it if it were shingles. They don’t like hot roofs. If it were steel I would blow it tight and vent above the roof deck. I have a video on how to vent above a roof deck.

Greg the walls were 8'6" so we had a 6" rip of sheetrock at the top. I just put the sheetrock on the bottom so I didn't have to net the entire thing. That 6" top is coated easy in the mud joint on the top. I usually do it the way you explain. Liposuction to the walls lol. 👍👍

I have a pole barn that I am going to insulate and I am considering putting purlins on the inside, then putting a coarse of osb on vertically then stuffing it full of cellulose . Add another coarse of osb and so on. The blow the final coarse in as you did. Do you think this might work out or should I install studs?

@lukehunter3902
@lukehunter3902 3 года назад
@@bondobuilt386 hey buddy. Insulation contractor here. It's not dense packed because the manufacturers of cellulose (Applegate, Green Fiber) say that you can only achieve dense packing in a retrofit application, ie drilling holes into a wall or ceiling that was built and enclosed without insulation. What you're doing is called BIBS (blown in blanket system) or it's also called net 'n' blow. Which is a great system but it's not dense packed per se, because it's not getting enough material into the wall to meet "dense pack" standards. One thing I will point out is that you are not supposed to have the insulation puffing out as you put it, or proud of the studs. I noticed you put thick shims trying to compensate for this on the studs. I believe you've over filled the cavities, at least according to the way the manufacturer specifications go. Not saying it's a bad system, it's just not the way the manufacturer of the cellulose or fiberglass for that matter tells you to install it.

@Balticblue93
@Balticblue93 Год назад
Owens Corning suggests you have the membrane proud, so the 5/8” or high-efficiency boarding material packs down, but you use screws, not nails for the drywall or Zip board of some kind. Never nails for drywall installs but use a higher efficiency wallboard from any number of vendors.
