Denethor was the last ruling steward of Gondor, whose life was one of tragedy, and while he may not have been the most heroic of characters, he fought many battles of will against the Dark Lord Sauron directly. Thank you all so much for watching, let me know your thoughts on Denethor in the comments below! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

I wish Denethor's book character had made the Jackson films, it would have greatly enriched the story as having Denethor be powerful, strong and competent, it would have made his collapse into despair all the more potent. There would have been more tragedy too as Pippin and he had shared moments where Pippin admired and respected the Steward with Denethor being touched by Pippin's acts and service.

@@alanpennie8013 yes, this was the greatest missed opportunity in Jackson's RotK I felt. by portraying the relationship between Denethor and Pippin in a negative and frankly creepy/oppressive light, Jackson missed the emotional poignancy of Pippin who began to see Denethor as something of a mentor/father figure watching Denethor finally break and move towards self-destruction. Likewise, it changes the context of Denethor telling Pippin, "I release you from my service, go and die in what way seems best to you." rather than in the film where it's done as a cold dismissal, in the books, it's Denethor being kind(in his broken way at this point) to Pippin by allowing him to go where he wills and die how he sees fit. It really is a shame because the relationship between Denethor and Pippin was supposed to be similar to Theoden and Merry, which again, would have made the aftermath of the siege that much more emotional.
@dustwyrm

@@grandadmiralzaarin4962 And Pippin understood his wish to die together with a loved one instead of alone, but he decided to fight to the end instead of giving into despair. 'Well, well, now at any rate I understand poor Denethor a little better. We might die together, Merry and I, and since die we must why not? Well, as he is not here, I hope he'll find an easier end. But now I must do my best."(From RoTK, Book 1, Chapter 10). Denethor and Pippin's relationship is very complex and interesting.

"And this foolishness nearly saw the death of Faramir" Except it WASN'T foolishness. It was an extremely risky move, and a desperate one, but it was an effort to keep the forces of Sauron from storming the walls of Minas Tirith for as long as possible - an effort to buy Theoden and the Rohirrim the time they needed to come to Gondor's aide. And it worked! Theoden did not come too late to turn the tide of the battle because of that desperate attempt led by Faramir and ordered by Denethor to delay the siege of Minas Tirith itself. In the movie it was extremely foolish and was nothing more than a suicide run that accomplished nothing but getting Faramir's entire company killed. In the book, a third of them were lost but they succeeded in holding off the enemy for nearly an extra three days! Days that the Rohirrim definitely needed/used to get to Minas Tirith in time! Yes, Gandalf feared for Faramir's life and told him so, but that did not make the plan itself foolish. AND Denethor additionally had a plan to aid them in their inevitable retreat, which was also successful.

Denethor was a man of great potential who allowed his pride and jealousy to overrule the wisdom he had been given. Jealousy of Thorongil. Jealousy of a Steward's position being lesser than a King even though functionally equal during his rule. Pride in himself and his own strength - against a Maia. A tragic character and ultimately a broken man, yes. But he sowed the seeds of his own tragedy in pride and jealousy.

It is one of the few true mistakes of the Jackson films that they thoroughly assassinated his character, especially considering the level of talent they picked to play him. Cool yoystan 👍 I think we can't blame denethor for everything. He was quite lordly and the strong man gondor needed at that time. Time and decline had weakened gondor. Fighting Sauron mentally aged him. Losing his wife and knowing how weak gondor was affected him. Some people say he should've done this or he should've done that but gondor had not as many soldiers as its heyday and nobody has taken into account the population of gondor at the time of the war of the ring and the dwindling of the Dunedain
@lisboah
@lisboah Год назад
Not to mention that he ended up being right on several points: -While they had good intentions, he was right that Aragorn and Gandalf had ulterior motives that would undermine and eventually take away his authority. -He was right that neither Gondor nor the entirety of the Free People could stand against the full might of Mordor. Even without the Ring, Sauron would have won. Aragorn and Gandalf had to rely on a very dangerous gambit to achieve victory. -In hindsight, believing that two hobbits would be able to destroy the Ring was nigh foolish. Gandalf overestimated Frodo's willpower and underestimated the Ring's temptation. Middle-Earth was only saved because Gollum took the Ring from Frodo's fingers and then fell onto the volcano.

Denethor was a remarkably skilled leader who did an excellent job for the most part in the struggle against Sauron. That's why I think they eventually have to hand over the throne to an heir of the line of Isildur.

What Denethor had that Sauron did not have was the explicit RIGHT to use the Stone. That is a powerful thing, and probably crafted into the nature of the Stones by the Noldor of Valinor--Maybe even by Feanor himself. That's why both he AND Aragorn were able to use the Stones without the interference of Sauron, though at a cost. Witness Aragorn after looking into the Orthanc stone--he seemed older, grimmer, as if many years fell on him in a single night.

Which goes to show you Tolkien’s ability to capture real human sociological themes and deeply infuse them into captivating and complex characters. Nihilism always leads to a kind of self destruction one way or another. But Nihilism in of itself in literature is bleak and too much of it has a way of sucking the joy out of a story. Having this one character though brings a sharp dichotomy with Gandalf’s never ending resolve and bravery. His ability to inspire hope in others in the face of absolute darkness. This may not have shown through quite so brilliantly if not compared directly with Denethor.

Aragorn and Faramir were paragons, men with such nobility of character and innate wisdom, that corruption of their souls was nearly impossible. But Denethor and Boromir had personalities that led them into believing that they were incorruptible, when that very arrogance was what made them very much corruptible. They wouldn't turn into any kind of monsters but they would be evil and serve sauron same as people of rühn they came from numenor as people who literally worshiped Morgoth due to corruption of sauron while he was in numenor . So answer is they wouldn't turn into any orcs or monsters they would just be evil

I wish the full depth of character could have been shown for Denethor, but he is after all a minor character. There’s only so long one can make a film and LOTR was already pushing that to the max. Plus it gives us all even more reason to read the books : ) *Ecthelion is without a doubt my favorite sounding name of all time.

When using the palantiri is one with strength of will & able to 'see' with the stone looking at the mundane world alone or are they able to recognise the 'fea' of beings. Sauron/Mairon had not fully regained physical form & Olorin/Gandalf wore only the raiment of an old man so as not to break Eru's command, not to order but persuade his children. Was then, Denethor aware of their real identities as well as the lineage of Elrond & ultimately Thorongil/Aragorn?

The movies did no justice to Denethor. I do think mention of Denethor's will power when faced with Sauron through the Palantir should have been looked into more.
@martykitson3442
@martykitson3442 Год назад
ummm the palantirs were not evil, they were not the works of evil, they came from Valinor, the Ithil stone in the hands of Sauron was of course corrupted and that's where the problem came from for both Denethor and Sarumon
@MenoftheWest

Indeed, at this point they were dangerous and evil to use due to Sauron’s corruption.

Yes yes yes. Theoden manipulated and enfeebled by Saruman. Loses his (only) son. Only to accept to trust Gandalf. Forgives his (adopted) son. To go out and fight for a land that is not his own. Compared to Denethor: enfeebled by Sauron. Loses his son. In his madness he gives into despair and lashes out at his other to almost his second son's detriment. Distrusts Gandalf. Takes his own life out of despair. Poetry. It rhymes LoL

Question: I've only ever watched the trilogy, but I wonder... You think Jackson and crew filmed scenes of Denethor as the character in the book? I ask this, seeing as the trilogy has over a year's worth of film, with some pickups as well.

Although a technicality, I d ok my think it’s correct to call him the last ruling steward… that was still technically Faramir, even though it was while he was in convalescence.
@MountainFisher
@MountainFisher Год назад
It comes down to Denethor had a Right to use the Palantir as Steward of Gondor. Saruman had no Right to use the Palantir and fell. Denethor couldn't be made a tool of Sauron nonetheless he could only see what Sauron allowed him to. Aragorn also had the Right to use the Palantir, but had greater strength than Denethor and wrenched control of the Palantir from Sauron, thus seeing the danger at Pelargil.

Great video. I’d be interested to see one on “how the movies changed Denethor” it was so sad to me that in the theatre the audience literally cheered when he killed himself in the film. In the books I feel one is moved to potty for this man but I’m the movie he is made out as almost no better that Sauron or Sauramem.

Do now thy office!’ Then Faramir stood up and spoke in a clear voice: ‘Men of Gondor hear now the Steward of this Realm! Behold! one has come to claim the kingship again at last. Here is Aragorn son of Arathorn, chieftain of the Dúnedain of Arnor, Captain of the Host of the West, bearer of the Star of the North, wielder of the Sword Reforged, victorious in battle, whose hands bring healing, the Elfstone, Elessar of the line of Valandil, Isildur’s son, Elendil’s son of Númenor. Shall he be king and enter into the City and dwell there?’ And all the host and all the people cried yea with one voice. ... ‘Men of Gondor, the loremasters tell that it was the custom of old that the king should receive the crown from his father ere he died; or if that might not be, that he should go alone and take it from the hands of his father in the tomb where he was laid. But since things must now be done otherwise, using the authority of the Steward, I have today brought hither from Rath Dínen the crown of Eärnur the last king, whose days passed in the time of our longfathers of old.’

I don't think that Sauron would have know of Thorongil as this indicates that Sauron would have know that the King of Gondor had returned. Sauron was unaware of the Return of the King of Gondor until Aragorn looked into the Palantir.
