Tia mi dispiace per ciò che ti è successo e fai bene a voler denunciare, non ti fermare di fronte a nulla perché c'è bisogno di persone forti come te che dimostrino il razzismo in Italia è un problema.

Come ha detto il tuo capo la soluzione era rimanere sul treno. Se avesse avuto problemi avrebbe dovuto chiamare le autorità e avrei proprio voluto vederlo a quel punto. Ritardo del treno, licenziamento e chiamare le autorità senza motivo è passibile di multa. Come minimo la denuncia.

It's so sad and I'm totally sorry that this happened. Unfortunately racism happens everyday and everywhere nowadays. I've been living in Germany for a couple of years and in Italy for some years before coming to Germany and sadly in both of these European countries I've experienced and witnessed similar unfortunate situations, sadly. Personally, I thank you for reporting this on social media (which is MUCH MORE effective than taking legal actions): you are using your platform wisely to spread awareness on unlawful things happening everyday! It's EU, you can request camera records of this situation under GDPR law (regolamento generale sulla protezione dei dati). Do it, and then take it further. You definitely should sue them. They may try avoid giving it to you if it's their fault so you must mention you will report them if they don't fulfill your request (its few million fine for them). Write request in two copies and deliver it in person ask for stamp with date and signature on other copy you will take back with you.

Ho 22 anni, sono bianco e sono italiano, e gli impiegati di Trenitalia mi avranno urlato contro e cambiato al volo le regole del loro servizio un sacco di volte. Non penso si sia trattato necessariamente di un episodio di razzismo, ma sicuramente è inaccettabile pagare un biglietto Freccia e vedersi trattati in questo modo.

Ciao Tia. Non so se te lo ricordi, ma avevo già scritto qualcosa (molto più blando) riguardo quello che è ormai il mio ex lavoro. Ti posso dire che stai avendo una reazione normalissima e corretta, umanamente al 500%, è il tuo sentire, ma anche sul comportamento formale del capo treno. La questione dalla platino (è la versione "più fidelizzata" della carta freccia, che si ottiene con 7500 punti se non ricordo male) è corretta formalmente, ma sul fatto della figlia hai completamente ragione: alle due è stato fatto un favore, solo perché questi clienti (oro e platino) sono considerati delle mosche bianche e trattati con un riguardo anche oltre il regolamento. A loro è concesso l'ingresso senza i 10 euro in più per cambio prenotazione a bordo, ma la figlia, minorenne o meno, ha ricevuto un trattamento extra, che era riservato solo alla madre. Facciamo poi un passo indietro. Dal servizio "a terra", vendita e assistenza diretta, si vede il treno pieno, ma se qualcuno avesse perso il treno o non lo avesse volontariamente preso senza modificare il biglietto, no, perché i sistemi a terra e quelli a bordo NON COMUNICANO (e lo ho sempre trovato ridicolo, perché come si fa a dare un servizio completo?). Tocca quindi andare a chiedere al capotreno, sempre che non si trovi qualche riottoso del controllo ai varchi che decide di non farti passare, nonostante il biglietto BASE BUSINESS (e sì, uno dei più costosi, dopo c'è solo il servizio EXECUTIVE). Cosa penso personalmente? non so quale fosse l'orario del treno, ma trovo strano che fosse pieno di venerdì, solitamente il giorno del "non-c'è-posto-per-milano" è sempre stato la domenica, come trovo strano che non ci fosse un posto almeno in standard o premium (lo so, è un down-grade, ma i treni per Milano spesso sono enormi, talvolta doppi, da Roma poi ci sono i diretti che non fermano a Firenze) oppure in Executive, visto che i costi sono altissimi e la carrozza è sempre vuota. Quindi penso proprio che il signore avesse delle riserve, come hai ampiamente detto, perché ahimè ancora resiste questo tipo di personale e nonostante i pretenziosi bla bla bla (cura del passeggero e tutte le str*****e), si preferisce ancora quelli che hanno zero capacità di trattare col pubblico (a scapito anche di tanti altri nell'azienda che cercano davvero di fare al meglio delle loro possibilità e mezzi il lavoro). Ho visto persone di questo tipo ed altre mentre ho lavorato in stazione e negare certi atteggiamenti è da stupidi (una volta mi arrabbiai tantissimo con un cliente italiano che se la stava rifacendo con un turista forse bengalese o indiano, solo perché, secondo il suo piccolissimo cervello, quel cliente come tanti era sicuramente un ladro, per il colore della sua pelle...). Trenitalia continua a parlare di sguardo avanti, di riguardo, neutralmente di cura, di nuova e più scrupolosa attenzione al customer service, ma con il buon 80% della compagine attuale, che è stanca per gli anni di lavoro, che forse non ha mai avuto voglia, di raccomandati, di personale che fa il suo lavoro sempre alla solita maniera senza mai accettare il cambiamento è difficile e quel restante 20%, che come si dice in gergo "si fa il mazzo tanto", difficilmente viene alla luce, perché episodi così ti rimangono addosso e di tutto il resto, umanamente e giustamente, non te ne frega. Si è passeggeri, in viaggio, e ci si aspetta relax, soprattutto se non si tratta di viaggi di piacere. E per quanto quello del ferroviere, se fatto bene, è un lavoro sfibrante che ti mangia la vita (perché vivi o in stazione o sul treno, fine), dimenticarsi a chi è rivolto tutto questo sa proprio di fallimento. Spero di non aver esagerato e che il tutto sia comprensibile. Spero che i tuoi prossimi viaggi non abbiano a che fare con niente del genere e se hai deciso di cambiare compagnia per viaggiare, beh, fai bene, hai diritto a goderti il viaggio ^^ .

Purtroppo questo succede molto spesso anche a me. Io sono Sudafricana e ti dico che quando vado o torno dall'università mi chiedono il biglietto prima di mettere il piede in treno. Anzi anzi ci sono dei capi treni che si fanno la rincorsa da infondo il treno per venire da me e chiedermi il biglietto. E ogni volta rispondo uguale: "Ho l'abbonamento annuale". Per me hai fatto stra bene a parlarne.

As an Italian I personally feel really ashamed and embarrassed from this situation.

Just terrible! Being white I'll never completely know exactly what you just went through. However, I will always support anyone who feels they are being discriminated against. I too am an American in Italy, and I too see discrimination against people that do not appear 'white' or 'Italian'. Even people of color born in Italy receive this treatment. I am so sorry this happened to you. You're absolutely right, it should happen to no one. Sad state of the world today, it does happen. I can't imagine how stressful that was for you! Is sad to hear such a thing, and as Italian I do apologise on beahlf of that man, the saddest thing is that things like these happen on a daily base in Italy, and we are less and less to speak up against these people.I really felt this episode, I am Italian and I live and work in London, everyday I have to deal with racist and offensive comments just because of my accent or my being Italian ( the worst one has been "you dont deserve to speak to me like this becasue you are not English!") Let's stop this NOW! We should be ashamed of what they have done to our society and we should be ashamed for doing nothing to stop this! Io vivo all'estero, in un paese di cui peraltro ho la cittadinanza, ma non essendo "locale", ricevo regolarmente commenti sgradevoli o trattamenti diversi. Fa male, è inconcepibile una discriminazione sulla base del nulla più assoluto.

A few weeks ago I was on a train where the ticket inspector went on a straight up power trip. I first saw him storming his way through all the carriages, chasing down African people and then he barged into the carriage I was in and started yelling "YOU ARE ALL TO SHOW YOUR TICKETS, THOSE WHO DON'T ARE TO GET OFF THE TRAIN IMMEDIATELY", except he only gave a quick glance to me and white American tourists without properly checking the tickets. He obviously yelled that in Italian but he didn't repeat it in English for the tourists and seemingly just let them be and gave them the benefit of the doubt, simply for being white.

UG. DIS-GUS-TING..My husband is italian (we live in Barbados), and we're thinking of moving back there. I have two teenaged girls (13 and 14), and every time we go to Italy, they feel the stares. I tell them it's just because they're beautiful :-) But hearing this story makes me take a step back from making that decision to move. love watching and hearing your experiences.

Hi, this happened to me once. I am Italian and white. I was a bit late to the train I ran towards at very moment when the doors were closing, one of the workers of the train asked my ticket in order to come in, I had my ticket on my phone and my phone was completely out of battery, and I was planning on charging it on the train. It was a really important train for me, I had to take it. They denied me to go up because of the ticket, which by the way is illegal, they can check tickets only ON the train and eventually give you a fine. After the train left without me I went to the closest police station, they helped writing a complaint to that worker, and they reassured me that it's completely illegal and he will pay for this.

This has happened to me many times unfortunately (in different situations). I am slowly getting really scared of living in my country (Italy), on the other hand though, I feel like the answer to racism in Italy is not to be scared or run away (reaction that I had many times), but learn from these episodes, understand what is wrong and what is right and spread our stories to help people get out of ignorance (even if it's not our responsibility), just like you did Tia, I am sorry.

Eh Tia, being a black man who was born and bred in Italy I can understand you very well. This kind of shit happened in Italy also in the 90's, it happened to me too, included other racist stuff like being denied the entrance in some clubs and restaurants. God help you if your skin is black in Italy. Luckily now I live in England. Did you ever think to relocate in another country? Cause frankly speaking I would NEVER raise a black child in Italy.

Sorry Tia if I take the liberty to tell you this, but I really want you to know that this story gave me freaking goosebumps. I’m italian, about your age, I live in Milan just like you and I take the frecciarossa back and forth from Milan to Rome every single week. I don’t have words to describe how angry I feel right now about what happened to you. I can’t take that something like that could have happened and still can happen in my country, in a context where I find myself in very often. I can’t take to live in a place where situations like this truly occur. I feel ashamed. Because, you know, we all say “these are hard times”, we all somehow acknowledge that this is where the whole social and political situation might lead to but we refuse to admit to ourselves that this is where we at already. I am sharing this video because I want people to know that these are the times we live in and that we have to take a stand. We HAVE to make a change.

I'm very sorry this happened to you. To be honest your video made me feel less alone about something that happened to me a few days ago and I'm very, very thankful to you for sharing your story. I visited Japan for 20 days and the people there are just wonderful, super welcoming, nice and polite. On my last few days there I visited Osaka and sadly my hotel had a shared bathroom and shared toilet that were just too filthy and atrociously smelly to be used. That was not a huge let down for me because I was walking around all day anyway and Japan has many public bath houses where you can go wash yourself and relax in the hot water. I went to a different public bath every night to visit as many as possible. I've been to a lot of public bath houses (sento) and thermal baths (onsen) before so I know all the rules. On my second to last day I went to this public bath, washed myself and then went back to the changing room. I was minding my own business, brushing my teeth, drying myself, reading etc. I noticed the lady who cleaned the place kept walking around looking at me, which is very inappropriate considering people are naked or half naked in there. I was sitting on the floor when she suddenly started screaming random Japanese words showing me the door. I thought I was not allowed to sit on the floor so I stood up. After five minutes she comes back yelling at me to get out. I thought they were closing earlier so I just went away. Other costumers were getting in as I was leaving so no, they were not closing. Considering I wasn't doing anything wrong or weird and that they were closing in two hours I just have no idea of what the hell I was doing wrong. It is weird because every single time I accidentally did something wrong (getting in the wrong entrance, forgetting to take my shoes off, not using the towel to sit in the sauna and so on) people always tried to explain me in the nicest way possible what I was doing wrong, with huge smiles on their faces and bowing several times. I always felt ashamed when discovering I was doing something wrong, but all the people I met were always very understanding and kind to me. This fucking psycho on the other hand was just yelling at me and looking at me with an expression of pure disgust on the face forcing me to get out. Just like your experience I literally could not find a logical explanation to what happened and I honestly started to think that the problem was that I was a foreigner. I was so saddened, angry and frustrated at the way she treated me. I get very frustrated at random acts of hate and discrimination and I'm frustrated about what happened to you as well. L'altro giorno sono salita su un pullman interregionale, un ragazzo di colore è salito, ha fatto il biglietto e stava per sedersi in uno dei primi posti; l'autista glielo ha proibito dicendogli che erano già occupati, cosa non vera perché non si possono prenotare posti su questo tipo di autobus, li non c'era nessuno e non c'erano bagagli o effetti personali. I posti sono in effetti rimasti vuoti per l'intero viaggio. Io non sapevo davvero cosa fare, il ragazzo non ha detto nulla ma io volevo farlo al posto suo. Mi sono sentita io stessa umiliata in quanto essere umano. Non sapevo se reagire o mo perché non volevo imbarazzare il ragazzo ulteriormente. Questo è successo in un paesino della calabria dove la maggior parte delle persone ha solo la terza media. Ma non è accettabile

Quando il cliente ti dice che andrà dal concorrente, l'italiano risponderà sempre VAI VAI! Perché essenzialmente non frega nulla di far sentire bene il cliente o di far guadagnare rispetto alla propria compagnia. Perché? Perché i dipendenti sono solo numeri, triste storia che vivo ogni giorno lavorando a chiamata in famosi negozi (e non mi comporto come il capotreno sia chiaro).

I remember once in 2002 the inspector of Freccia Rossa ( called Eurostar at the time) woke me up 5 times to ask me for my ticket because according to him I looked too scruffy to afford a first class ticket. They’re ridiculous!

Trenitalia o non Trenitalia, grande azienda o non grande azienda, loro sono al servizio dei clienti, e devono trattarli col dovuto rispetto, dato che inoltre non sono mai puntuali e i loro treni fanno schifo. Sono abituati a trattare come vogliono i loro clienti, tanto nessuno si è mai ribellato, fino ad oggi, almeno. Denuncia e non voltarti indietro!

I 100% agree with you, Customer Service in Italy does not exist, from the tone of the voice, the attitude and the "Menefreghismo completo", and they still have the decency to act this way when the country has so much crisis, very few jobs, low wages and the 3rth largest debt in the world (FACTS). Feel bad for the good people of Italy, they are stuck living in a country full of negative and toxic humans.

What did the other people on the train say and do while you were speaking loudly? Sadly I'm not surprised. I really like Italy but the last few times I was there I was not allowed to feel comfortable there. I was stared at and made to feel unwanted. At one point my husband and teenage daughters went to buy souvenirs in this town where we were staying on the Italian riviera. At the back of the shop there were rows and rows of bottles of beer and wine with Hitler on them. We were totally shocked. We left without buying anything. I hope something comes from this. I feel so sorry for what happened to you. I used to travel a lot with Trenitalia and Freccia, I can tell you that their workers are most of the time very rude and unprofessional. I hated having to rely on trains because of this reason. I've witnessed racism towards black people on trains and It's nasty. I had to leave one time after yelling at the "controllore" after acting racist towards people. I hope this doesn't change your mind about staying in Italy, I love my country and I'm ashamed for what happened to you.

I'm glad you used your platform to discuss your experience. True racism exists everywhere in the world, but racism or any form of discrimination needs to be called out...it can no longer be swept under the rug or sugar coated. Trenitalia has the resources to identify the racist conductor. Tia, again on point with your assessment of the lack of customer service, & professionalism with many organizations in Italy. Although I had a posItive experience in beautiful Italy, I did observe below par customer service & professionalism especially with TrenItalia & Alitalia at Fiumicino in Rome 😒

Hey Tia, sad to hear what happened to you. Apart from that I’m almost convinced it was not about your skin colour. Obviously i can’t say anything for sure since I wasn’t there but I personally live in Milan and am Hungarian and numerous times had to face to the same situation as you in Agenzia delle Entrate, Comune, INPS, Posta. It’s about to be a foreigner and there are Italians that still have an old way of thinking. Shame on them. Regardless I’m also convinced that 70% of these workers are just simply ‘ignoranti’ and they just basically do not care & not know what to do and how the system works. Please don’t be sad, you are beautiful and there are lots of lovely people in this country ❤️✨

How long have you been in Italy? By now you should've know to just board the train like any other italian and then see what happens. No ones bothers capotreni since most of them are rude as fook

I spend about three weeks in Italy last year and one thing I would avoid as much as possible (there are destinations where they are the only one serving) is to ride trentitalia. They are so inconsistence with their rules wherein one personnel says it is acceptable but the other one states is not. This sometimes result in fines. If you appeal , it is going nowhere because the train personnel don't communicate to each other. Good luck arguing if you are not white ( I had witness the same situation in a different route where the end solution was more forgiving?). Writing a formal complaint will also lead you to nowhere. I love Italy but just beware on the customer service and inconsistency of Trenitalia.

Incredibile come tutti vadano contro a Trenitalia senza sapere le cose e con un titolo (ed un ragionamento) così superficiale. Il biglietto business ti consente di cambiare orario o tratta PRIMA dell'orario che hai sul biglietto. Se perdi due treni senza cambiare la tua tariffa allora te ne devi fare un altro. Perdo l'aereo. Pretendo di prendere quello dopo. Non me lo fanno prendere. Faccio un vlog dove spiego che sono tutti razzisti e "mi odiano perché sono nero". Cara mia, l'Italia è piena di difetti e anche di molti razzisti ma non penso sia questo il caso. Ah, i "bianchi" avevano semplicemente una carta che da dei vantaggi. Come ogni compagnia al mondo. Mi ricordo quando Delta Airlines mi tenne in aeroporto tutta la notte, senza neanche un pasto e un posto dove dormire. Non ho fatto un vlog dove dicevo che" gli americani non mi hanno fatto prendere l'aereo perché sono italiano"

Ciao Tia sono ferma al minuto 4.39 perchè mi ha scioccata il tuo commento posso capire la tua frustrazione ma anche io lavoro nel customer service (non trenitalia) e anche io se un cliente tenta di ottenere qualcosa da me MINACCIANDO di affidarsi alla concorrenza, io indico la porta e rispondo "vada pure" non contesto l'episodio di razzismo che è inaccettabile ma in un paese civile, non esiste che un impiegato cambi il proprio modo di agire dopo essere stato minacciato da un cliente. Tu hai bisogno del servizio di una compagnia quanto la compagina ha bisogno di te e io rimango ancora allibita quando mi trovo davanti un cliente con questo atteggiamento che reputo inaccettabile e irrispettoso del mio lavoro.

Most Italians are wonderful humanistic people but there is a climate of hate that I have seen, unlike anything I've experienced in my 11 years of living in Italy. Ho fatto il primo anno di università da pendolare Verona-Venezia e ancora era abbastanza tranquillo ma poco dopo non ti dico ma ogni due mesi più o meno ogni volta in stazione qualcuno veniva a controllare che fossi a posto ( sono siciliano ed in estate potrei passare per un nordafricano) biglietto? C’è? Carta d’identità? Non so perché ti serva ma ecco... e non è tanto il controllo in se ma il modo in cui vieni approcciato . Veramente snervante dopo un po’...

I’m so sorry this happened to you. I’m italian and I’m ashamed to say that lots of italians are racist, not against black peoples, but against immigrants. They are not able to recognise the difference between an illegal immigrant and a black tourist. Also as you said the italian costumer service is non existent. People are rude. I’ve been living in Australia for the past 5 years and I’m so much happier. Italy is beautiful but I would never go back to live there.

This kind of discrimination usually makes people feel so guilty, ashamed and uncomfortable that I can tell you were really brave to stand up for yourself. I'm really sorry about your experience.

Già Trenitalia fa schifo, ci manca solo che tengano gente del genere a lavorare. Denunciarlo e farlo licenziare sarebbe un vantaggio anche per Trenitalia e per tutte le brave persone che potrebbero prendere il suo posto. E si spera che la selezione sia più accurata la prossima volta, che rendano chiaro che se uno ha un biglietto ha diritto a stare sul treno, che la sua pelle sia bianca, nera ecc.

Good for you! You are such an intelligent woman. I also got a chance this past week to confront and transmute my no-fussing attitude in a completely unrelated topic. I stood up for myself by bringing in a lawyer friend to help facilitate the discussion in a friendly way, and POOF! vanished the attempt to infringe on my personal space. Very liberating. I have learned that allowing any incident to leave us feeling disempowered is an invitation for more similar if not worse incidents to appear in our lives. I hope you never go through this again now that you’ve energetically made your boundaries clear.

Tia I know what you feel in this moment...I have a close treatment when I show my ID to the policeman like carabinieri and polizia and they read where I live...cause I live in a zone of Milan that is considered like a ghetto called Quarto Oggiaro, and every time they ask me "cosa fai in giro a quest'ora di notte?" Or " può girarsi che la perquisiamo un attimo?" And try to see if I have something in my car or in my pockets so... I know the feeling in that situations of discrimination not for the colour of the skin but for the place where I live cause I don't have money enough to live in a more rich place and be considered a good guy... It's happened one or two times that carabinieri pull over me on the Road with a gun and when let her read my ID starting to be aggressive and search in my pockets if I have a kind of drugs maybe.... Trenitalia Is a shit but I don't think is a private company but is a state company so obviously they don't care of customer service at all... Only people that live in Italy can understand! I’m really sorry that this happened to you Tia, I hope this video reaches awareness about this issue. I had a bad experience with trenitalia also, about 4 years ago in a regional route. I’m italian but I’ve never lived there so my italian is a little broken and if I get nervous or stressed it gets worse. I got in the train with my mother and sister, and the station in which we got in they didn’t had the little machine in where you scan the ticket code and the office was close, so there was literally no one except us. We got in and waited for someone to validate as the conduttore told us, when the two guys started checking the tickets I explained to them in the most polite way that I could that we had no idea how to validate the tickets and that we were visiting the area and bought the tickets the day before. Well the tallest and whitest guy took out his phone, zoomed in a 2.500€ fine form and shoved it onto my face. He said that he knew that I was lying, that we were invading his country and started yelling insult that I still can’t understand. I had to calm down, I reached out my italian passport and asked for his name. The guy finally shut up, muttered an excuse and got off the train in the next station leaving the other one in. It was awful and terrible to me because I thought of Italy as a welcoming country
