This was a MASSIVE upset at the time. Germany had just won the World Cup two years prior ad then lose to Denmark (who only qualified through special circumstances) in the finals.
Sure, but remember that Denmark had already beaten Germany in Mexico 86 and eventhough Denmark qualified to Euro 92 by chance they had been outclassed by Yugoslavia which was even a better team, another team that would have probably beaten Germany as well (The Red star from Belgrade won the Champions league in 1991 so Yugoslavia was a great team by then and Denmark proved that they fit well taking Yugoslavia´s place.
@@exelentation1 you know, I've always wondered what would have been if the old Yugoslavia had not fought a civil war and broken up into 6 different Nations (or is it 7 with Kosovo). They had too much talent, and several players from Croatia's 1998 World Cup squad were part of the star-studded Yugoslavia U20 team that won the 1987 U20 World Cup on a canter. I even heard that Yugoslavia might have won USA 1994 if they had qualified; such was the quality of their team. I guess we may never know. But huge credit to Denmark for taking their chance. They may not have qualified for the tournament, but the fact that they showed up to take it shows that they were worthy winners!
Don't over excited, at 0.30 look at the foul committed. Considered the VAR, in today's game the first goal would be disallowed for sure and a Yellow or Red
@@exelentation1 Still you're over excited. Look at a handball at 1:41 on the Danish Striker who smoothly absorbed it with a tac of hand to balance it and run with it.
I will never forget watching this match as kid with my grandfather. The household had rooted for Germany throughout the tournament but we ended up falling in love with the spirited performance of Denmark. I will still say Bravo to Denmark 28years on, and RIP to my Grandpa. Hope he is still happy in eternity as the day Denmark won this tournament.
And we danes thinks that our victory at the 92´s Euro was the biggest achievement ever. Both Greece and Denmark´s triumphs were a big surprise, and a victory for football!
you could add Kaiserslautern 1998 who became Bundesliga champs right after being promoted from 2th League, with a coach named.... Otto Rehagle (the Greece Coach of 2004 )
I saw the German television when the Danes won over the Dutch team. It was literally like this:"Now that Denmark won over the Dutch team, do you know what that means? That means Germany will become Champions" Soo funny.
Ben Roderich no it wasn’t the first goal wasn’t a foul he got the ball .The second one was ball to hand, he didn’t put his hand in unnatural position, or attempt to handball .
@@benroderich5058 Nope not at all, both statesment are wrong. Powlsen hit both ball and leggs at the same time. Wilfort hit the ball with his shoulder not the arm. Quite clearly visible. When you see it from the right ancle.
He could've had the chance to, if only England hadn't stolen the match through a fictional penalty during an irregular play with two balls on the pitch, which had to be stopped. They should've gone through the penalties against Denmark to actually claim their place in the final.
I was only five at the time, but I remember how it felt as though every single danish person was happy for a week or more afterwards. Never experienced such a collective joy ever again in my life.
I was almost 12 by then, my first experience of European tournament. I saw little of 1990 wc so I was familiar with countries like Germany, Argentina, Cameroon, Brazil, and Italy. I also saw most of the Italy 91 U17 wc which my country Ghana won. By this time my interest in football had increased because I couldn't believe Ghanaians could compete with other nations and win - even against Brazil and play just like (if not better than) them. After the 1990 wc our TV station started showing football made in Germany. Then all of a sudden our TV started showing a war in Yugoslavia and also another football tournament, to our surprise a country I didn't either than Germany won it against all odds with so much determination really made me love the game and not just the game but European football. I followed Schmeichel to Man U and I've always been there since.
Not true about Michael Laudrup. Laudrup did not want to play while Richard Møller Nielsen was leading the danish national team. The way of play was simply too defensive. Michael Laudrup did not play for Denmark for 2 years
No. DBU and Richard asked Laudrup to play when they had qualified, but he said he didn't want to take another players place on the team, because he didn't play the qualification matches.
The Dynamte show and teaching us that nothing impossible. You guys very inspiring n humble. I watched this match when i was in junior high school. Actually Denmark is my fav team. I saw them for the 1st time when they played in Mexico in world cup 1986. I saw how soren lerby, preben elkjaer larsen, jan molby, jan bartram, flemming christensen, Laudrup, Lars hogh, hendrik andersen, john ericksen, kent nielsen, frank arnesen etc played and i falling in love with them all
Muammar Fadhilah Lord Bentner is so good he made his country win European Championship when he was 4. I don't know how he wasn't player of the tournament.
Really sad how Flemming Povlsen got injured shortly after this championship. He could've become the greatest. Immense talent and his passion for the game was something else 🙌
Dont forget : Boban, Savicevic, Stojkovic, Prosinecki, Mijatovic, Jugovic, Mihajlovic, Suker, Jarni,Pancev,Katanec,Boksic...some of the players who havent a chance to play...
Very talent team but many of those players would never have gone to Sweden even if Yugoslavia were not suspended. Boban, Prosinečki, Šuker, Jarni and Bokšić has already stopped playing for Yugoslavia after Croatia declared independence. After the bombing of Sarajevo had started manager Ivica Osim had resigned and players such as Hadžibegić and Baždarević would follow suit and refused to go. Pančev would withdraw from the team.
Yugoslavia had one of the best national teams in the WORLD (not just Europe) back then and it's hard to think of any team in any era that has better, more colourful strikers than Mijatovic, Boban, Savicevic and Suker. Too bad politics and war got in the way of it all
Peter Vermeer the political mistake was to create Yugoslavia in the first place..... so many different nationalities put together was obvious that at some point it will explode.... USA said after WW1 that countries should have the right to choose their own destiny but they put all these countries together without their consent....... great American hypocrisy
@@henrichvonstaufenberg4841 One of the most powerful and culturally significant countries in the West, France, is basically a mishmash of various ethnic groups. Granted, they all speak French, but by no means do they share the same history and they didn't go through the same formative experiences as a group. They don't all share the same sense of historical injustice or historical heroism either. The French are Flemish, they're Occitanian, they're Alsatian, Breton and what have you, and yet they succeeded in building a functioning country with a degree of social cohesion that is unheard of in more homogenous countries (Hungary for instance, or Belarus). And of course the anticolonialist stance the US took after World War 2 was complete bollocks. American domination and interference in other sovereign nations' affairs is THE defining aspect of the pax americana.
We Brazilians used to name this Danish team "Dinamáquina" or "Denmachine". That team was the sensation, the number one hit of the football charts. Shame it didn't live up to the hype in the World Cup(98), but like an machine, they used to kick ass. I was born in 96, and unfortunately I don't have memories of this team. but this Denmachine was magic, in it's pure form
You should see the first three games with Denmark in Mexico 1986. Preben Elkjaer and Michael Laudrup were a magical duo. Denmark beat the South American champions 6-0. Then we had a total break down and lost to Spain 1-5. The break down started with Jesper Olsen's passing backwards. Furthermore Frank Arnesen was out because of yellow cards. We still have a saying in Danish: To make a Jesper Olsen 😂😂
Euro Football Championship Winners : 1976 : Czechoslovakia 1992 : Denmark 2004 : Greece 2016 : Portugal Every 12 years, it seems to appear that the winner team is the one which had never won this championship ever before. That s just unbelievebale.
1:41 He controlled the ball with his hand so it is illegal goal !!! Thanks for VAR technology that does justice for the teams and not waste their efforts in such great tournaments!
Many people talk about this Denmark as "the biggest surprise"...but their greatest national team ever was developing several years before...don´t forget that Denmark had already beaten Germany in 1986 worldcup, Scotland and slaughtered Uruguay...that means they had learned how to play football long before this participation in Euro 92.
Walter Valley Moore then in world cup 1998 we almost beat brazil in the quarter finals and then well it wrong until 2017 denmark did not lose a single match
@@blituarik bro there is a difference between playing for the team with all your will and winning a trophy and just winning it , I am talking about Cesar
Martin tyler the golden voice of football. Even in all sport he is the best commentator. I also watch handegg, basketball, motogp, and f1. Those sport had some great commentator al michaels, john madden, marv albert, kevin harlan, nicl harris, murray walker. But tyler is still the greatest
Randomly caught this game on Univision in the United States, it was fun to hear Andres Cantor announce even thought I don't understand Spanish. But this was a treat to watch this game.
Half of Denmark's team players had already off to their vacation spots when they were called up to get back to training camp ! it was a spectacular job that Danish manager Richard Møller Nielsen did to put the team together and won the title ...Unforgettable tournament
In this game, the concept of 'underdog' was created. I was 8 when i watched this match. everybody said Germany will win easily, except my dad who wanted Denmark to win. At the time, I thought my dad is hallucinating cus I thought only a big footballing nation can win trophies and lesser nations will lose no matter how they try. Just like in movies, where good wins and evil loses in the end. I was too naive. Two years later. my dad said Bulgaria will beat Germany, and I still did not believe in my dad's prediction lol
You have to remember : Denmark wasn't qualified to 1992 euro but due to yugoslavian wars, it participated (Yugoslavia withdrew). When we see the final result, no one could imagine that.
Jensen has finally got one right! As I recall he was having long shots at goal throughout the tournament. And a compilation where some shots were nearer the corner flag than the goal. Can't score if you don't shoot...spot on in the most important match.
