“Hey Charger! - This the one episode that every Chrysler fan must watch.”
If we asked the question, what does the VJ Valiant and a TM Magna have in common?......Well, the answer is Dennis Nicolle, a true hero of Australian car design, with a rolled-up sleeves approach.
Dennis is one of the very few Australian designers that can say they designed the traditional, American-led larger Chrysler road cars, and then as Australian consumers embraced a more sophisticated design essence, he turned his design flair to a Japanese manufacturing style.
“I’m not that important,” said Dennis when we asked him to join the series. Yet, this is a man who before designing and sketching cars, worked in the Chrysler Keswick pattern shop in Adelaide, well before the days of Tonsley Park.
His first design task was to help style the early VJ Valiant Charger as Dennis’ career would see him travel to the US to train with legendary Chrysler Designer, Bob Hubbach. Upon returning to Australia, Nicolle then helped pen the likes of Valiant, Regals and more Chargers again before he caught the wave of Australia’s surf culture, creating the winning styling of the Drifter Panel van and Drifter utility.
When Chrysler moved out and Mitsubishi arrived at Tonsley Park, Dennis thought his career in car design and styling had come to an end. How wrong he was!
Instead, a new generation of Japanese-led car design would see Dennis style generations of Mitsubishi Magna and Verada variants, including models for the all-important US export market.
What a truly inspirational story of a car designer who has literally seen and done it all and a story that will make you want to buy a Charger or a Drifter panel van.
“Shannons are proud to commission this landmark series to celebrate the rich design heritage of the cars we all know and love. While Shannons plays a key role as Australia’s leading insurer for motoring enthusiasts, we also believe it is very important to preserve our automotive history for future generations” said Mark Behr, Executive Manager, Marketing for Shannons.

South Australia misses it's automotive manufacturing. One thing Chrysler/Mitsubishi prided it's self was in the highest Australian made content. This was essential for future government contracts and Australian jobs. And the pride that went with it. Oh and the specials

As a Mitsubishi fan I just wanted to say thank you Denis for you work and designs of some great Australian cars. When the first Magna was released I loved it. The size, room and comfort far out weighed those of Holden and Ford. I owned an Elite and as I wrote to Mitsubishi many a times, Love That Car. The wagon designed was fantastic. Offering more room in the back that the soon to be released commodore.. Each Magna wagon looked like it was designed to be a wagon not an after thought like its competitors. Thank you and well done.

My late father throughout his life had a plethora of cars, including BMW’s & Mercedes Benz. But way back in the 60’s dad had an AP6 Valiant! He always reflected about the cars he owned & this was his favourite back then! My late uncle was a Chrysler tragic! They were all he owned. But Dennis thanks for the memories of the Charger in particular! Going to school through the 70’s EVERY school kid I reckon in Bendigo always yelled out “Hey Charger!” whenever we saw one! 👏🏼👍🏼😎

I wonder if Dennis Nicolle played a role in the GE to GN Sigma's as well as the magna? I also wonder if he was involved in the RB to RE colt designing at all? Those chargers were brilliant cars as well as the standard valiants. Sigma's were great too. Those TM to TP magna's looked magnificent and still do. As well as the TN and TP magna wagons with their sloped tailgates. None of those chargers, drifters and magna's would've been possible without the clever styling work of Dennis Nicolle. Absolute legend.

As a Canadian who lives not too far from the Chrysler/Stellantis factory where they make the 300/Challenger/Charger in Toronto, I still cannot get my head around the whole story of Chrysler Australia. I know Chrysler was involved with Mitsubishi for years, up until 2004, but I still find it odd how ALL of Chrysler’s Aussie staff, dealers, and factories went to Mitsubishi. Chryslers/Mopar dealers are everywhere in NA, whereas Mitsubishi has amounted to nothing. I could NEVER imagine the Brampton Chrysler Muscle car factory EVER say, being bought by Mitsu and then building Outlander’s. Imagine owning a V8 Valiant and having to settle for a Magna? Imagine no 80’s square New Yorkers? So bizarre, but very fascinating at the same time!
@davidbayley9588
@davidbayley9588 Год назад
Chrysler did the same thing when they sold Chrysler Europe to Peugeot in 1978. Peugeot took over the Chrysler factories and product line, rebranding the cars to Talbot. Then in 1980 Chrysler sold off its Australian division to Mitsubishi. GM also ended up selling their European divisions to Peugeot too.

By the time I was old enough to buy a car, the last Valiants were kind of getting on a bit, but my parents did buy a brand new VC Valiant wagon. He didn't stick with Chrysler for any of his later purchases, as he didn't like the 1970's Valiants to look at. The VC sedan remains my favourite model in terms of styling. I did have a TP Magna for a couple of years:- nice to drive and we'll equipped, but lacked torque and was troublesome. I had a Mitsubishi Colt from 1985 as well, also built in Australia I think. It had good performance, but again, it was unreliable. I don't blame either car. When they were both new, they may have been just wonderful, but were getting on in years by the time I had them.
@johnd8892

@noelgibson5956
@noelgibson5956 Год назад
@@johnd8892 Correct........it was an earlier model Valiant. In the 60's, Valiants were solid performers in both sales and engine performance. Their sixes were the 1960's benchmarks for sixes in Australia. They also got the local V8 scene up and running.

Unfortunatly the Ford was a better car in every respect. Partly because of Chrysler Oz lack of money. The VG at the latest should have had a 4 speed. The hemi was not short of power but a rattly noisy harsh thing,, V8s were oh so lazy. A 318 [better 340] with some compression and a decent intake and 4 bbl would have been as good as a 308 and lost less cam lobes. Then 340 or 360 to keep the 351 honest. And seat that did not sag and kill your back. Yes I have owned dozens of the things
