"The Road", either the book or movie is a better example. No zombies, but its well past the SHTF moment and into final days. Maybe "One Second After" for more of the immediate event to a year after. I still think One Second After shows things being better than they would be.

Dennis Quaid makes a good point, we are overly dependent on technology. I grew up in the late 1950's and 1960's and if something catastrophic happened we could survive with the basic skills of our forefathers like fire, hunting and fishing. Now we feel vulnerable and alone if we lose our cell phones!, even our automobiles are thinking for us. Without power we lose everything including our survival as all of the experience and skills of the past are gone.

Not true, Most Amish do no use power lines to house, but do have generators for power. Their businesses use electrical power tools and computers. The farms use modern farm equipment, only a few still somewhat still use the old ways.

The department of homeland security addressed this issue in 2019 and said that they estimated that some 80% of the population would die within 2 months of a nationwide grid down situation. They recommended everyone have at least 2 months of food and water, even said the politicians and even the president should be encouraging people to do it. Of course they have remained silent.

Rural small farmers, homeless people in cities who already know how to scavenge and make do in tough situations, and anyone who has had to face adversity and adapt are likely to be alright. People who are intolerant of anything other than a convenient, comfortable, entertained lifestyle will suffer, as well as those who are dependent on medications and medical equipment. We recently visited Dublin Ireland where street signs were sometimes hard to locate. I asked the concierge at the hotel for help...he said most people just use their phones. The next time I stepped outside to walk to a new destination I noticed most tourists had their phones out calculating the route... in the rain

@C2yourself Dublin was my l e a s t favorite city destination. 20 years ago, stayed at the Westbury on Grafton St. The staff were totally clueless. Had absolutely nothing in common with the locals 😕 😒 . Found no bright spots whatsoever but the British chain stores on the high street.

I remember the Cuban missile crisis. We lived in NE Washington DC at that time and we were sent home from school early to die with our families and clear the streets. We could see the Capitol from our house so my father laughed at my mother who was suggesting we stock up on basics, he said extra toilet paper wouldnt save us, but rest assure we wouldnt feel a thing.

Virtually almost everything built after 1985 has a computer chip of some sort - appliances, automobiles, phones, pacemakers, even clocks - these would all cease to function if we were struck by an EMP or CME. Even most solar panel systems aren't hardened against those issues. Consider the rioting and vandalism that ensued after the 'blue vs black' controversies. Imagine what would happen if people suddenly realized there would be no more food delivered to stores, etc. Anarchy is an understatement.

The excellent fiction novel "One Second After" by William R. Forstchen frighteningly describes the turmoil that would occur in the aftermath of an EMP attack that would knock out our power grid and all modern electronics. Within a year 90% of the U.S. population could be dead from starvation, lack of medical care, and a total breakdown of law and order. I think you can still find One Second After as an audio book on RU-vid. There's also the book "Lights Out" by Ted Koppel, which is a more investigative reporter type examination of the threats to the very fragile power grid, how the government and power companies are and aren't dealing with it, and the difficult problems a solar flare or EMP event would cause. There are also interview videos on RU-vid with Ted Koppel talking about various aspects of his book.

What he doesn't mention is the fact that, not only would the power go off, the equipment that generates and carries that power would be fried. It's not as simple as resetting the circuit breaker.

I've started keeping increased supplies and food as well. Purchased a new generator about a year ago that runs on gasoline and propane. I keep 5 full propane tanks on hand. My wife also convinced me to start letting her raise ducks and chickens. We already stayed prepared for hurricanes because we used to live in Florida. If anything happens we can survive for months, possibly years. Happy we moved out to the county away from all the craziness that will happen in the cities if something were to ever happen.

We lived on a mile and a half dirt deadend road that was a pricey rd and the town didn’t take care of it WE did so when the ice storm happend in 1998 we went about 20 days without power due to the trees being covered in ice and draped down into the middle of the road the entire way out. Our house was at the very end of the road so we were the last to get power on. And we were fine thanks to our woodstove

That's great and all but how did u get water..with a emp attack there will be no running water at all..only just what u could fine lingering around.. this I believe is the elephant in the room that nobody talks about.. all pumping stations wells will not be able to operate for they all run by some sort of electricity or electrical components

@@Myspicyonion wells won't work..they need electricity to pump the water up..not many live near a spring..springs dry up rather quickly in the heat & are rather small if your fortunate enough to have one nearby .not to mention most rivers streams and lakes will become contaminated very quickly due to sanitation pumps will not be operating as well

@@MyspicyonionWells have to have a pump to pump up the water. Pumps use electricity. We have a well but we finally went with city water because we were tired of being without water every time the power went out. Of course city water isn’t the best either and won’t be around if the grid goes down so I keep an extra stash of bottled water for emergencies.

My dad was wwii vet who first told me about emp's when we were discussing the Cold War. Also, not many people know about the Carrington Event and the impact it would have on today's world. I think families should throw the breaker on their houses at least once a month to give their children an opportunity to appreciate electricity. But kids would lose their minds without their phones.

All solar and wind plus that many years prepping up in the mountains . 250 to 300 miles from a metropolitan area and rock climber climb drive up here Very insulated from the hords and can go for years n years on suplies on hand any day. Never in the dark cold or hungry. And full kit. Bad times down range.😮😅

You will need to shield your generators. Also install a battery bypass so if it's an emp there is not electric current in the generators to short them out. Look to a Faraday cage as well.

@@cathleenmore4656 Renters at the very least could store extra food back each week, plus some means to cook it. (solar oven, propane stove with several propane cannisters, rocket stove, extra lighters and matches.) If some of those items are unaffordable, there are plenty of youtube vids to make them yourself on the cheap. It will take months to years to rebuild the grid, so people need to be prepared for the long haul, but at least having extras of everything will buy you time to figure out your next step.

What do you mean? We shut our power off at the pole when we use our generator. It's in the instructions because if the power was restored while the genny was running, it could cause damage. I'm not sure about older models, but the new ones flat-out tell you in big red letters.

The northeastern power grid failure of 2003 didn't produce the anarchy this posts suggests. Four days without power in the dead of summer. We (metro Detroit, Michigan) experienced no violence, no anarchy. Actually, everyone was pretty civil and helpful to each other. Fear mongering doesn't help, although being prepared for the worst possible scenario is always prudent.

I live on a sailboat, I don't want to live like that but if we lose all power I'll flick the main and use the solar panels. Get real tired of eating mangrove snapper but there's an abundance of them living under the boat. Neighbor has a huge water maker, I know which boats that don't have liveabord owners that also have water makers.😉 I think that would be the first thing I "acquired". I've done enough recon in different marinas that I worked as a mobile mechanic, there's lots of options.

Surge protection on our substations? We already have such things in place to protect the grid and transformers, large breakers, and generators, but I do agree it is susceptible to even small attacks which would be a lot of work to get plants back online
