Documentary about the construction of actor Dennis Weaver's Earthship in Ridgway, Colorado. Includes bits with Earthship inventor Michael Reynolds, and interviews with Dr. Charles Keeling and Senator Timothy Wirth.
Very labor-intensive project & no one wants to "work" nowadays. Much easier to throw up green wood, match stick houses with uneducated, unskilled, illegal workers.
I don't know what else he is known for, but there are MANY people doing projects like this. I personally have friends in 5 communities building Earthships and other eco friendly structures. I got to this video from research before I begin building my own. There is hope for the world, lots of people doing it 💗
@@deannasmith6350 I want to build a mini earthship which is less than 1/10th the size of this one. Have you started building one yet? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vv3D_70n9gY.html
No, Dennis died of cancer in February 2006 and what a wonderful man as was his wife from, I believe, October 20something, 1945...I think. I first met Dennis and Gerry Weaver in 1987 at the Windstar, Choices for the Future Symposium in Snowmass, Colorado. They were the nicest, most down to earth people you would ever want to meet. I got to see them every year that I attended the Symposium until the last Symposium in 1995...and I attended 7 of the 10. Have pictures of Dennis dancing with our then 5 month old daughter, Sara, in 1988, on Sunday afternoon as the Symposium was ending. 1988 was the fantastic year that so many people from the then U.S.S.R. attended the Symposium including Alexander “Sasha” Gragsky, a famous singer from Russia. He and John Denver recorded together John’s song, “What Are We Making Weapons For” aka “ Let Us Begin”. Dennis was kind enough to send my Daddy an autographed picture that I requested just weeks before my Daddy died in July of 1996 as he did for Sara in early 2006 before he passed away that was a sweet graduation gift for the baby girl he danced with in 1988. Dennis, as Chester Goode on “Gunsmoke” was always my Daddy’s favorite character on TV. Dennis was absolutely a wonderful, wonderful man as was my friend, John Denver...two talented, caring men that the world is a much poorer place without. We miss you, Dennis...and John....RIP both of you until we meet again...I look forward to it.
For a 1990 video production, Dennis Weaver knew exactly all the hazards and the dangers of what global warming was all about and yet he was a real visionner. For he has left us with a legacy of truly wonderful movies, throughout the entire course of his remarkable career and for what we’re so proud of, as well. RIP Dennis Weaver. Thank you, Johnny, Montreal, Canada 🇨🇦.
i use to live in montrose, colorado and i worked in a small health food store there. Dennis Weaver would come in there with his wife. I had no idea till i saw this that they had built an earth ship. That was a longvtime ago....i miss that area of Colorado. Its sad that he is gone now.
Reverred and missed actor of the bygone generation of true western actors who now belongs to the heavens A pioneer in the solar and reusable materials home building. So Inspiring. May he and his wife be at rest together
Sadly, he was considered to be a bit eccentric back in 1990, just another hippie, but now we know he was right about global warming and resource conservation. Of course solar technologies were much more expensive then than now, and I'm glad to see that we are slowly beginning to accept and turn toward supporting sustainable energy technologies. I just hope we're not too late.
I remember that he had a piece of furniture that was featured in a woodworking magazine. It was made from a big cottonwood tree. I was hoping to see it in the documentary, but it did not see it.
Our a high-rise buildings could be covered with kudzu and then a Trimming system could trim that kudzu twice a week and a vacuuming system..could pull it into parts of the building, where it could be fermented into fuel .. and created into food ...Because it’s highly edible
Great man with nice personality , sorry for my english , I am from Algeria , since I have watching his movie " duel " , so ... have good time . RIP Denis 😢
20:23 Dennis Weaver also knew that insulation was a good thing especially winterization. I consider myself a partial environmentalist. Also partial conservationist. I still like Fossil fuels. He is dead right on cutting energy use in half.
@@Elphaba1952 your phone/computer whatever it is you use to get on social media and make comments like this, exists solely because of fossil fuels Gina.
An old TV commercial from the Weyerhaeuser Tree Corporation said that they plant 20 trees for every one they harvest. If that was only replicated in other countries around the world.... imagine.
It's great to replant forests, but we also lose diversity when we cut down old growth and clear cut...have to be contentious about how we plant and how we harvest.
I think in 1989-90 when they built this house LED wasn't around for household use. Of course today they are and much better than the CFL. We still have some working CFL bulbs that we bought 25 years ago.
Probably couldn't use those tires in Indiana where are winners are sometimes can be really really cold below zero, and then really heat up in the summertime in the 90s, in rubber shrinks and expands in the cold in the heat but that looks like a great idea they're doing I presume they were in California.
I live in an Earthship around Taos - living area is in the 70s year-round. Winters can get to negative 15 (maybe lower) & summer goes into the 90s. So - you don’t need to build in moderate CA to make it work for comfortable living.
The only thing I would do differently is I would sharpen rebar stakes and drive them: Thru the layers of the tires .... This would attach all the tires;.... to each other,And it would “stick”... them to the ground...& therefore the tires could never slide around if there was a big earthquake If I could find a crazy strong glue ...that would glue the tires; to each other....That would be ideal....And I would ventilate the tire areas... so that any offgassing:... that they did ...would go up n out through vents and not into the living area
There is no off-gassing in the living areas. Also, improvements to design have been implemented through the years including rebar stakes and much more!
Ya I bet the power companies who gouges the hell out of us just had to love that he didn't need then to power his massive Earthship!!! He could power his entire Earthship wo them!!! Bet that just chapped their ass!!! I'd love to know who ownes this major nice ship now!!!

The cement industry is one of the main producers of carbon dioxide, a potent greenhouse gas. Concrete causes damage to the most fertile layer of the earth, the topsoil. Concrete is used to create hard surfaces which contribute to surface runoff that may cause soil erosion, water pollution and flooding.
It’s good being environmentalist but in the end we all gonna die’s! That’s just way the law of Nature works, and yes our future children’s dies also…… Being helpful and being kind to one another is more important
But you're scarring the earth just to make a home! Digging up tons of dirt and altering the landscape is not " in the natural harmony of things". Just sayin... Anyway RIP Dennis!
Richard Widmark in How the west was won said we should scratch the earth and leave a mark . Lets Just Try to be good about it ! RIH DENNIS I did not know that you had left us !
Chuck Wagon - NO, NOT scarring the earth! Helping the Earth - no heating or cooling necessary to live in an Earthship. Using all-natural Earth to insulate your home makes sense - completely comfortable & no need to really scar the Earth by minimizing the need for fossil fuel’s electricity.
Wow man, awesome video. Great man he was. Thanks for sharing this. I'm from Brazil, was born in the 80's and I love the way this was filmed, it's inspiring.
Dennis Weaver was one of the coolest men on the planet. Greatest tv actor of all time. Duel, Cocaine, Bluffing It and that movie when he beat up Sally Struthers, doesn't get any better.
Starting at 11:26, his wife Jeri is there doing some of the building. I met her when she volunteered at a school where I was working. You may not know that Dennis was also a Yogi. He gave great lectures at the Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine in Pacific Palisades.
After all these years… still standing! Biotecture Planet Earth (non-profit that helps around the world in disasters) has built earthquake resistant community center in 2010 and started a school in 2020. These structures have withstood the most current devastating earthquake that just occurred this summer.

Let me say this about the incandescent bulbs and that is many of it is not sold at 99 percent but less then 8 percent or lower. I predict that electric, fuel cells and CNG will outpace new gasoline vehicle sales between 78 and 85 percent in the future where new gasoline sales vehicles will be restricted to a few types of vehicles that gasoline sale vehicles will make up a small percentage of about less then 14 percent. Large trucks and large SUV's will not be part of the American vehicle market.
This does uncover how long the CO2 evangelists have been active. Remember that this video was from 30 years ago ... some things haven't changed much at all.
Grew up watching Dennis on Gunsmoke, I like the gray water system, He lost me at global warming ! He was hoodwinked, we need CO2, 19 Scientists are who we are listening too, the media give them the voice, when over 30 thousand say its b.s. Living in that house would be like living in a cave ! and what about all those Battery's ?
WRONG! - watch Kiss the Earth movie - showing on Netflix now - Right On to how we live. Stop pushing “killing” rather than living in a world where we help each other live BETTER and in harmony with nature!!!
