Denon AVR-X6700H 13.2 channel 8K HDMI 2.1 Receiver Review 

I haven't had the X4700 or X8500 in yet, so I can't directly compare them, but looking at the measurements that others have done, the X4700H is actually slightly cleaner in the amplifier section (less distortion) though it also produces slightly less power. I don't know if it would be a difference you could hear in real life, and I typically chalk up differences in receiver sound quality to room correction instead of the amp, since that seems to play far more of a factor when I directly A/B compare them. If I didn't need the extra channels of amplification, or didn't need DTS:X Pro, I think you could step down to the X4700H and it would be almost identical in most cases.

The two speaker presets take care of exactly what you are talking about. You can set two completely different speaker layouts and it will save corrections for them individually.

We haven't tested the 960H, but the way you'd likely want to set this up is by having the main output with eARC going to the eARC input on the TV, and then connect the Xbox One X to the input on the TV that supports 8K/HDMI 2.1. Then you can use eARC to pass the full uncompressed audio back to the Denon from the Samsung while still having the full bandwidth input for 120Hz gaming. The secondary output on the Denon might not support 120Hz (we haven't tested) as often you'd use that for a situation where you have a TV and projector in the same system but the secondary device usually wouldn't support eARC or 120Hz. This gets complex since Samsung (and Vizio) this year are putting HDMI 2.1 high-bandwidth inputs and eARC on different HDMI ports, so using the high-bandwidth input on a receiver won't work if you also want eARC, so I'd connect the Xbox directly to the TV and see if that solves the issue.

I never had it shut down on me, even after playing movies and music all day long. It was kept in an AV rack that's open on all sides but in a closet, so in a completely enclosed space it might be different.

No, I don't have a speaker setup for Auro 3D so I can't comment on that performance.

Those are all reasonable to drive, at 8 ohms, though 86-88dB nominal. Since you're routing the bass off to subs it should be a bit easier to drive. I think either will work fine, though the fact that the Center is only 86dB sensitive makes me lean towards the X6700H to be sure.

No, this 6700h is for North America and runs on 120 volts. In Japan, you will need a 6700h that is 100 volts or 230 volts depending on your region. Voltage is listed on the back of the receiver.

Only the 8K input can do 4K 120Hz as it requires more than 18Gb/sec of bandwidth. Theoretically you could do 4K 120Hz with 8-bit color (so no HDR) and 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, but no content uses that format so I don't expect you do see anything that can.

@@iamnoone6118 The new XBOX and new PS5 can use HDMI 2.1 for 8k@60Hz/4K@120Hz. I don't know of any other source devices that utilize that. At least not yet. If your TV has additional free HDMI 2.1 ports, then you could use those as inputs, and the eARC port back to the Receiver to feed those device's audio. Opps - he explains that @9:43. There are 2 new Yamaha Receivers for this year that have multiple HDMI 2.1. But I think it maxes out at 7 channels.

@@_Volt_Ron_ I'm treating myself to a Nvidia 3090 in addition to at least one if not both of the new consoles. I need at least two 8K inputs as I have no patience to screw around unplugging and re-plugging cables. Also at this time, I don't know of any TVs that have more than one 2.1 input.

@@iamnoone6118 ​ l oh you are right about some video cards that support HDMI 2.1, as the new nVidia RTX 3000 series cards. Including the 3090. Forgot about that. I also agree about not wanting to plug/unplug HDMI cables with too few HDMI 2.1 ports. No way. There don't appear to be that many TVs that have multiple HDMI ports. But the LG CX/GX models have 4 HDMI 2.1. ports. Those are OLED TVs. And the Sony X900H (LCD) has 4 HDMI 2.1 ports. We haven't tested the X8500H yet, though we talk about it near the end of the video. It won't have an HDMI 2.1 upgrade until later this year.

At 4K bucks I doubt Denon will send many out for review. Its freaking huge at 50 lbs and will NOT fit in most audio cabinets. IMO, the sweet spot is the outgoing AVR X6500H. Just picked one up for 1499 and it will do about 90 percent of what the 8500 can and 95 percent of what a X6700H will do. Those discounts won't last long. I got it running some monster Polk audio SDA SRS 1.2 from the eighties and they are VERY demanding as far as power. The X6500 does a great job and sounds really good for two channel listening as well as for multichannel listening

@@armandosain7323 I apologise if my constructive criticism is not what you want it here, but I wonder if you're listening to your Denon in a acoustically untreated environment or even in a uncarpeted room environment! the reason why I say this is because fortunately for you it's going to be more difficult for you to hear the transformer components etc humming away in the background! There is always the other possibility that you're pretty new to this and you really not quite sure what good audio supposed to sound like?

@@totalplonker824 I have been dealing with audio for more than 30g, the room where I use it is set up especially for music, and home koino, I changed a lot of receivers, but denon is definitely the best, but only higher class, not these lower class models

I probably agree with you to a certain extent, denon is the best in most aspects apart from the most crucial aspect, which is audio quality! Part of the reason why Denon receivers are so popular not only are they reasonably priced they are also extremely user-friendly and people are comfortable with them, denon can afford to sell them at that price because they source cheap components! Please don't tell me you think a Denon receiver is on par with arcam, Cambridge Audio, anthem etc

It looks like in the UK, it's the AVC-X6700H, but in the US and the one we tested it's the AVR-X6700H and includes a tuner so it's a receiver and not a cinema amplifier.

If you watch the video at 0:46 in (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QWYWfmsZ5gw.html) you'll see it has AM and FM antenna inputs as it does have a radio tuner built-in, at least in the United States. It's possible that versions for overseas lack the appropriate tuners for their countries.

European model has no FM radio and is designated AVC, American model has FM tuner built in and named AVR. Applies to the whole Denon range of multi-channel amplifiers.

$2500 is the MSRP at the time the video was made. Since then the AKM factory that produces many of the chips inside burned down, and there was a massive chip shortage worldwide that affected price and availability, but right now it looks like it is $3100 from Denon, Amazon, and other dealers.

I paid under £1700 for mine new, and it's a late model so 8K works etc. Im also running a couple of Emotive BasX power amps, for the front 3 and 4 surround channels, means the Denon only powers the 4 Heights and 2 Atmos channels.

The new Yamaha models look interesting, but they're better compared to a model like the Denon X2700H, which is also a 7.2 channel receiver with an 8K input. I've liked a number of Yamaha receivers in the past for stereo audio, but their YPAO room correction has always been lacking compared to Audyssey, with very little low frequency correction where you most need it. The lack of multiple 8K inputs on a receiver will be an issue in a few years potentially, but not right now. Most 8K TVs (including those from Samsung, Vizio, and more) have their eARC and 8K inputs on separate HDMI ports, so they're almost designed for a receiver to use the eARC input and connect 8K devices directly to the TV. Yamaha also doesn't specify the bandwidth of their 8K ports, but 40Gb/sec and 48Gb/sec will have almost certainly no real world difference, as no TV uses a 12-bit display panel and currently has no reason to in the future, and going to 48-bit the only difference is 12-bit 4:4:4 4K, 120Hz video. And the only device we know right now that might do that bitrate, the Xbox Series X, is going to achieve is using FRL and DSC over lower-bitrate HDMI ports, so both the Denon and Yamaha could still pass the signal. 40 vs 48 is unimportant in the real world.
