A big thing I liked about Crimson Tide is that it didn't portray an extremely high-stakes struggle between good and evil--it portrayed a big struggle between 2 different views about how to do the right thing.
I wanted to watch Denzel Washington and Former President Carter have a thoughtful conversation about the use and procedures governing the launch of nuclear weapons.
President Carter was an officer on a nuclear submarine. That's what I was expecting. I served on a nuke sub (SSN) from '83-'88. Not a big fan of CT from a technical standpoint. Sure it was a Boomer, but I knew other sailors that were on SSBNs so I knew enough about them. (Boomers, Part-time sailors...)
Denzel Washington is just such a fantastic actor. As soon as you know that he is in a movie you know its going to be a good one and crimson tide was just a brilliant movie
A story like that actually did happen where nuclear war almost came to fruition. During the cuban missile crisis, a russian sub almost nuked the US, but it came down to one man who didnt want to and prevented nuclear war. Amazing story
Fun fact, he was also the XO on K-19 when it had the nuclear coolant leak incident. K-19 The Widowmaker is a film about that. Kinda interesting that this guy was part of two separate submarine incidents that inspired two different movies about the events lol.
@@gusm2752 during the 1950's there was a group within the US Navy called "Rickover's boys." Adm. Hyman Rickover was called the "Father of the Nuclear Navy", and when the concept of putting nuclear reactors in submarines was first being developed, Rickover was putting together a group of elite, brilliant naval officers to make that concept into reality. A young Lieutenant (j.g) James Earl Carter was a member of that group.
That tense scene with Gene Hackman spectacular as he slowly assumes responsibility with a captain who is going rogue. Best acting I have ever seen by Denzel and I watch all his movies.
Denzel Washington to genialny aktor, cudowny człowiek i wyjątkowo przystojny mężczyzna. Do tych wszystkich zalet należy dodać, że jest dobrym mężem i ojcem. Aż dziw bierze, że przy tej sławie i urodzie pozostał skromnym człowiekiem. Uwielbiam Denzela ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Y'all tricked me! I were thinking of president James Earl Carter: former naval officer.. worked closely with the late Admiral Hyman Rickover, who were known as the father of what became today's nuclear navy! That Jimmy Carter! A great man, a former president that got a bad rap.. who's still doing great things at age 96! God bless you Mr president and first lady Roslyn. Married for 76 years!
Now, a talk with the inventor of the nuclear navy would’ve been interesting. In the PBS Rickover movie, he’d said we’d probably destroy ourselves in a nuclear war. Unfortunately, he passed on in ‘86. This movie was in 95. But he would’ve picked the movie apart. Too many failures all coming together at once.
As a former reactor operator on a SSN, that entire movie was an absolute cringefest from beginning to end. But with some suspension of disbelief it was well-paced and thrilling.
Denzel n hackman may be the best 1-2 punch. Great movie n characters...neither character was wrong or bad. The kind of movie that makes you think, "who's side would I be on"
In the comments someone replied to a comment that read it was an insult to ask if Denzel was intimidated or experienced *_stage fright,_* wow, by working with Gene Hackman. The reply, more or less, said that since Denzel wasn't bothered by the question the commenter must be of this new generation that's insulted by everything. Well God willing I'll be 69 next month and at my age I take a lot of things I see and hear with grains of salt so I'm not too insulted by anything. But keeping it real this question really did irk me; even stunned me a little. I immediately thought "so Denzel is good but not as brilliant as Gene Hackman?" Is this what this guy's implying?" Ok the interviewer probably wasn't implying anything of the sort but that's what I thought. 'And I am a huge Gene Hackman fan. Ever since he was in *_Bonnie and Clyde,_* which I saw at the theater in '67, I've been mesmerized by every movie that I've seen of his. Anyway, soon as I heard the question I went to the comments to see if anybody else thought the same and some did. Denzel actually says he's never been intimidated by any actor. He's one of my top 3 favorite actors of all time and currently my favorite. I like this guy so much that I feel he should win an Oscar for every movie he makes! 😁 However, after really thinking about the question it's not without precedent, at least in my mind it's not. I remember reading years ago that Bette Davis, *_IMO_* the greatest actress/actor to come out of Hollywood, said that when she worked with Claude Rains, Captain Renault in Casablanca, she told his daughter, Jessica Rains, that he frightened her. There's a short Interview here on YT with her actually saying that her father did indeed frighten Bette. I thought this was rather revealing because by the time she and Rains did their first picture together, *_Juarez,_* Davis had already won two Oscars but I don't know if she meant that Rains was intimidating on or off the movie set.
@@tesstickles1280 correct. Crimson Tide was far superior. Much as The Hunt for Red October was a stylish film, unfortunately, it had Sean Connery in it. Furthermore, the subject matter just wasnt quite as dramatic in my opinion
I think asking him if he was "nervous" or "intimidated" working with Gene Hackman was a direct insult. Almost insinuating that Denzel isn't on the same par. I think you can see Denzel thinking the same thing by his expression right after the question is asked.
Aleatha Vogel You don’t know what Denzel is thinking, and Denzel has said in the past that Hackman was the best actor he’s worked with... But I get it, you’re part of that generation that is insulted by everything...
This film was 5 years before "Training Day" which he won the Oscar for. Besides Denzel is too cool to get his knickers twisted over an interesting question.
Nah it's a good and natural question, and I don't see Denzel having a problem with it. Denzel is awesome but Hackman was his senior, a serious veteran actor (also old marine) with a long career, multiple awards and respect etc. from other actors
Gene Hackman is one of my favorite performers! I day performer cause that what he does... PERFORMS! he has the ability to disappear as Gene Hackman on screen.. and become the character! He performs... Not act!
Karen or uh, i mean Katie Couric, tried to pigeonhole Denzel as anything but a normal person with the right to speak his mind and she was surprised when he refused her categorisation. Truth is she was startled by someone standing up for himself and not playing the role she wanted him to. Also I think she grew up thinking black people should know their place. She may have shed most of that but this shows not all.
@@Tusc9969 ah yes, just call the white lady you don’t like a Karen and you win. That term is a simple tag and it’s crap in many applications. Based on a narrow definition that basically everyone agrees that Karen’s (meaning entitled and ignorant white women… but people should realize there are entities and ignorant assholes all over.) anyway, I m just saying… don’t be so eager to label/tag someone as a certain type or thing when the criteria is half based on race. It is narrow minded to label someone a Karen and in the process label them for doxxing, firing, etc(there are multiple examples of this type of lynching)(forgive the use of the term) or cancelling/life ruining when it is so easy to get major news sources to pickup the story and spread lies from social media without doing actual journalism…. And then someones life is complete ruined over misinformation spread in a racially motivated manner. Fuck the actual “Karen’s” aka assholes and selfish pos of all types and places and races and addresses. But thinkin before you label something an “it” before you know any of them or the situation .
I would like to work with either Gene Hackman or Denzel Washington for a cinematic storytelling with a compelling story and interesting characters to follow for art in the future. And not to make a good movie that Hollywood does nowadays, which totally failed because it's not about ideology crap than a work of art through the movie medium the focuses on the story and characters and not to make a very good movie for everyone to spend their hard-earned money for. I, currently, am making myself a good writer, and I had come up with 17 original stories with their respective, original characters already. I'm planning to make more as my preparations for my future career as my own author for my own original stories for different mediums of storytelling. I have utmost respect for both of these men/actors with their gifts and talents for acting and storytelling. I truly hope that both are doing just fine nowadays and away from such selfish morons with their smartphones and flashy cameras. Still, I would love to meet both someday and show my respect and appreciation for them and their respective contributions for storytelling and above all, to thank them and wish them both a joyful life to the fullest. 🙂👍🏻👍🏿
If Denzel isn't upset about the question about Gene Hackman not sure why anyone else would be. If we were to take a younger actor today that question could be asked about Denzel because of how great he his.
Here’s another example of a interviewer asking questions that make the black actor seem less than of his white counterpart. So much praise to Gene Hackman like Denzel hasn’t won an Oscar by then & was a novice.
I didn't see Denzel unfomfortable on this interview so I don't know what are you talking about. Maybe because i am from another country but i don't share that journalist was so bad there
Right off the start when the interviewer said to Denzel that he must've been intimidated by working with a veteran actor like Gene Hackman sort of was a back handed insult to Washington and his level of experience as an actor.
Was anybody else suckered in by thinking this was him getting interviewed about talking with former president Jimmy Carter who served with the nuclear submarine branch of the Navy? Because I sure was! Total crap interview otherwise. Let the interviewee talk, big guy.
Denzel is commanding and dominant onscreen, but Gene Hackman is even more so. Unfortunately they did not have chemistry. It looked like Gene refused to look Denzel in the eye in Crimson Tide. Plus, I did feel Denzel was intimidated. I'm glad Gene did not try to slap Denzel like he did Sharon Stone, which was without warning and not in the script.
As a submariner, and crew member of the Bama (Blue Crew) I laugh at this film, but simultaneously am entertained by it, knowing that it's meant for general audiences, not us. Fun movie.
