One thing I have noticed looking back at these Pop quiz episodes is that the panel always consisted of genuine stars. and people with real talent. This is very differen to modern day shows where the "panel " often consists of celebrities people have hardly heard of. or have a minimal claim to fame.
This show is amazing. How is it I've never heard of this? Dave looks like he's 13 and wearing his dad's tie. Robert Plant is so tepid. Strangely charming.
@@glennoc8585 it was a stupid thing that he did getting that heroin addiction, I thought he had more common sense than that, of all the drugs that is the big heavyweight that eventually destroys you.
Duran Duran and Depeche Mode are the biggest new wave bands in England. I love them since 1983 (I'm 54 in March), to hell with the iron curtain!!! I don't give a damn about what is happening in the world between our countries! We are above all this. Health guys! With love from Russia!
Love you back oz, it's such a shame about the way humanity has been acting towards each other through history, imagine what we could have achieved if we cooperated with mutual respect , we would have been exploring and using much needed resources from other planets by now , but NO, we use the technology against each other,, through fear (mostly contrived by media, politicians) there is no hope for humanity, the joke will be on us someday, and rest of the Galaxy will be oblivious of our existence, RIP humanity, we had such great potential, shame we used it to get one over on each other.
Same here Oz, also I am 54 in March too on the 10th. Love to Russia from England. Those stinking politicians will not get us fighting again, hopefully.
This goes to show just how much musical talent there was in the UK in the 70’s and 80’s that programs like this were chockablock with random pop and rockstars. And at the time we just took all this for granted
I find these BBC 80's quiz shows really fun to watch, everybody seems to be having a lot of fun. Can't imagine a show like this in the U.S. with such diverse guests, back then or now.
Robert was so out fashion in the early ‘80’s that he did this show and Tiswas and probably others, just so he could promote his solo albums - it’s cool that he did them after being in one of the greatest bands ever with whom he did very little television. Nice to see Andy Mackay as well. Great to see this again. Thank you.
True but he had more success in America and Europe at this time. He was a rich man here from Zeppelin and the royalties then we're very good. He didn't need to work I would think.
Imagine being in the same room with all these legends!! Blimey, I would faint, or go absolutely AWOL. Thank you for uploading this, mate! We all appreciate it! Gonna show this to my dad! You’ve made our day!
When they did the 80s revival concert my partner was one of the photographers. I went along with him as his “assistant”. We were in a room full of my teen idols 🤩 But to my surprise I wasn’t “star struck”. I don’t know if it was because that they’d aged? Or maybe I had? I told my partner that I’d watch most of these guys on Top of The Pops 🎶 Now, if David Bowie 💕 was there it would have been a different story …
I appreciate the upload. It's a shame RU-vid won't allow for the music to be played but I'm sure you did all you could to allow us to see this bit of music history. Thanks so much!!
Watching Robert Plant speak-think his way through 'famous bandleader's son' to 'Elvis Costello' was extraordinarily gratifying. It's nice to know god is a human just like the rest of us. ;)
I think Music for the Masses was a bit later after this. This was June 1983, so actually Construction Time Again was just round the corner (my favourite DM album actually).
I went to see The Move at the Ilford Palais in 1968 (ish). Bev Bevan broke a drumstick and threw the bit left in his hand off the front of the stage, pulled out a fresh stick and carried on playing. I jumped over the barrier, grabbed the broken drumstick and gave it to my girlfriend as a trophy/souvenir. We broke up in 1970. Wonder if she ever kept it? I wish I had!
Loved Pop Quiz and I was ten years old when this was broadcast. Amazing to see Robert Plant on a TV panel show knowing what I know now about how huge Zeppelin were.
Bev Bevan caught my eye. He drummed for Sabbath’s “Born Again” tour along with Ian Gillan singing (strange period for the Sabs, lol). It was my first concert, about 4 months after this show. Killer concert and Smoke On The Water as an encore!! Hahaha.
@@isaiahromero9861 Better find a safe space! It's even worse than we thought. Just don't cancel me. More gifts from the younger generation. "Cringe?" Cringe is taking 300 selfies in one day. Cringe is eating tide pods. Cringe is getting someone fired for something they said 30 years ago. Cringe is being so addicted to your phone that you fall off a cliff taking a selfie. Cringe is believing there are 72 genders. Cringe is creating the oppression Olympics. Cringe is not seeing how tough we were in the past and not acknowledging how utterly weak and feckless we are now. Cringe is crying to youtube if you don't like what you hear, and trying to get my account canceled. Cringe is........I can go on and on and on and on
@@isaiahromero9861 it's not cringe. People complain because things are getting worse and worse and more woke and we now live in a cringey clown world. There was none of the cringey bullshit that Erick above has already mentioned in the 80's and they were much happier times, for me personally but also for many others too. It's not the youth's fault really though, it's those who manipulate and indoctrinate the youth who are to blame for the world taking a serious nose dive.
@@simondo3 I mean you're kinda right about the world going to shit now but I'm talking about how y'all constantly shit on newer music and culture that you don't even try to understand, I'm sure you remember how older generations criticized the bands in this clip and the generations before them criticizing things like rock n roll, that's what you've become
Hi! Can you tell me if he made a mistake on the Genesis song or if he nade a joke? What did he say? I don't get to understand that. Thank you very much
It's been said Bev Bevans was considered as a possible replacement to John Bonham. Also, can we talk about how Dave Gahan looks like he's skipping high school in this? Seriously, he looks all of 15
They guests that they had on this show were absolutely outstanding. My favorite game show of all time. Especially since I’m a music trivia junkie. So many of these guests have blown me away with their immense knowledge of music trivia. Much respect
Maybe they were asked to be on the show and maybe the celebs thought it was fun to appear on it. You're making it sound like anyone appearing on the show was there only for self promotion.
@@markzappasodi well,I didnt intend it to be a blanket comment on everyone's motives, but pop quiz was really big in the first half of the 80s so it surely did their careers no harm
Depeche Mode have frequently spoken about how they feel that they got off on the wrong foot with the press because they always went on television every time they were asked, regardless of how cheesy and embarrassing it was.
@@deastman2 I can see them being ribbed by the likes of the NME sounds and melody maker, but their list of hits in the top 20 throughout the decade means I don't think their career as a band suffered
@@deastman2 Everyone had to do them ( well , those on independent labels with little PR money) as there wasn't any MTV in the U.K. . At least no one released a criminal record on this show ...until Mike Read did. He really should have done some community service for it.
A few panellists have appeared only known by a mononym - Toyah [Willcox], Green [Gartside from Scritti Politti], and Nasher [Brian Nash from Frankie Goes to Hollywood].
Marvelous! I wish the States had done something like this, but panel games have been out of vogue here - jumping and screaming contestants winning lots and lots of money very loudly is more the US's style, sadly. :-)
We did in Australia, for about 15 years we had Spicks'n'Specks, named after the last Bee Gees hit here before they went back to UK. Spicks'n'Specks is having a new run now. Very similar to UK, very knowledgeable people and hilarious at times.
Band's were very young at their peak I mean plants had his huge success with led Zeppelin then his solo career at this time and he was only 30 something here.
So many great musicians didn't take themselves seriously back then. There's no way something like this could ever happen today. Of course, considering today's music, I wouldn't want it to.
