Thirty years into a quite extraordinary career, Depeche Mode remain the most successful electronic band ever, having to date sold over 100 million records worldwide. And as they continue to release new and challenging material on a regular basis and perform in front of crowds that can exceed 80,000 in a single night, the enormous popularity of these former Essex Boys illustrates how their resolute determination to stick with their original vision has repaid them handsomely in the long term.
This brand new documentary film traces the almost surreal development of Depeche Mode from their flirtations with New Romanticism at the dawn of their career, through the urban industrial landscapes envisaged on Construction Time Again and Some Great Reward into the dark hollow of albums such as Black Celebration, Music For The Masses and Violator to conclude with the departure of Alan Wilder in 1995 -- a point in their career at which they had achieved enormous commercial success but were now facing huge personal challenges.
Featuring interviews with all the band members, contributions from friends, colleagues and contemporaries such as; Gary Numan, Thomas Dolby, OMD's Andy McCluskey, Daniel Miller, band biographer Jonathan Miller, Depeche producers Gareth Jones, Dave Bascombe, Phil Legg and Steve Lyon, and electronic music experts Mark Prendergast and David Stubbs. Also includes; rare performances by Depeche Mode from across their career, archive footage, video clips, location shoots, news reports and much more.
Includes tracks such as; Just Can't Get Enough, People Are People, Stripped, Never Let Me Down Again, Strangelove, Personal Jesus, Enjoy The Silence, Walking In My Shoes, I Feel You and many others.

Completely True 👌🏻 I'm one of Yours! Hahaha... And I still can't believe the way they keep on catching youngsters, boys & Girls of The age of My Children! Btw, I'm rewriting the comment cause I made a mistake! I said my oldest child Who was 8 years old, No Way! She's 38 & my son's 27 years old... What I really wanted to say was my Grandaughter's 8 years old & she loves♥️ DEPECHE MODE... Hahaha!

One of the very best and most important bands of all time. Why? Because they took massive risks which paid off and they managed to break electronic music into America. Their musicianship and moulding of different genres deserves so much credit. Wish I could’ve seen them at the Rosebowl, what a gig that must have been...

I grew up with DJs I remember my sister's boyfriend playing Lime, Abc, Human League, Blondie, Then he played Depeche Mode I fell in love with thier sounds music and lyrics, I remember other sister singing " Somebody" People are people master and servant, The 80s I grew up to thier music, 1990 I remember buying Violator after school my sophomore year made copies on blank tapes to record. I gave one to one of my crushes,lol 1993 I tried to pursue this girl I played the whole album of SOFAD, on the phone talking to her, she didn't like the music at the time, years later we ran into each other she's a Depeche mode shirt. Hahaha

ULTRA! Is Absolutely GREAT! 👌🏻❣️❤️ But then again it's only my opinion, I've read quite a few times that people appear to believe Ultra's the second part of VIOLATOR! Actually I've always thought & had the same Feeling! I don't really know, cause I Saw Mart in an Interview where they asked him if It was or not? He answered It wasn't at All!!! Well, obviously SOFAD was in between Both VIOLATOR & ULTRA! So I suppose we'll never know the exact Truth, what do you Really think about All these thoughts & probably made Up stories???

Apparently the "rights" were not the reason as the original songs do appear later in the document. These "sound-alike" themes (according to credits produced by Jonathan Miller & Chris Ingham) are, in my opinion, a nice way how to glue the interviews and set an interesting undertone to the whole document.

All these guys owe a hell of a lot to people like Wendy Carlos, Vangelis, Jean Michelle Jarre and, to name but a few more: Annette Peacock, Bebe Barron, Clara Rockmore, Daphne Oram, Delia Derbyshire, Gudrun Gut, Laurie Anderson, Laurie Spiegel, Pauline Oliveros...the list goes one. These were the real pioneers. All the innovators like Depeche and OMD etc. etc. did was popularise the sound and bring it to the masses. Which is awesome of course - no complaints here! - but I do wish these documentaries would do their research a bit more thoroughly.

6:25 - Wrong use of "modular." For the most part, the BIG synths were the modulars and the small synths designed for travel were not. In this context, the word "modular" does not mean "portable." It actually refers to separate modules that can be combined to make a synthesizer. Like the giant modular Moogs that were unfit for touring (though at least one prog madman still tried it).

They aren't remixes. Whoever made the video didn't want to pay to use actual DM stuff so they got someone to program things kind of like known DM songs. If you listen none of these "remixes" have the actual melodies and whatnot from the actual songs.

I am almost 100% sure it's from a film by Godfrey Reggio called Koyaanisqatsi .... it's the first of a trilogy of very similar films, the other 2 are called Powaqqatsi and Naqoyqatsi ... search youtube and/or check with your local library as they might have the DVD to checkout. :)

I was looking for this documentary for a long time. The only one that tells the truth. When Alan Wilder left DM was doomed. Now they have a band of losers playing the keyboards and drums, their music sounds like crap. They would have never make it with the sort of music they are doing now.
@martinfarnworth6659
@martinfarnworth6659 8 лет назад
+vjrei wow. don't sit on the fence. although i believe their golden period ended after wilder left i don't think their relative decline was specifically down to his departure. Of course he was important to the sound but he didn't write the music. I still anticipate a new DM album even if they sometimes sound like their treading water.
