As a former law enforcement officer, I thought when a prisoner is hand cuffed in the front they needed to be tethered to ankle chains to where they can't raise their arms above their waist and can't move the cuffs but about 3 inches away from their waist??? At least that's the way it was in my jurisdiction.

at a young 61 years of age, Mr. Durm was probably thinking about retirement and fishing every day with his grand kids. Here is an S.O.B. that has orphaned a child, and then murdered a 61 year old man who probably wouldn't have done any harm to him. I don't like to pass blame on anybody, but here is a great case where the Marion County court system has failed the average law abiding citizen. I live just a few minutes south of Marion County, and trust me this punk would be living under the jail before he ever saw the light of day. The Marion County prosecutor needs to be answering a few pointed questions in my book
That was exactly what killed him, being distracted day dreaming, doesn't matter how long you do this you cannot let your guard down... how bad this was done that the criminal had all that leverage to reach over his head from the back seat while in chains... terrible, i'd gladly get my ass written up for putting the chains super tight, i'd say "it is the humidity that makes rats get all puffed up" ...

I want to know why there wasn’t another officer accompanied with the officer who was transporting the prisoner. If two officers were there maybe this tragedy wouldn’t have happened. This man died due to training and administrative procedures.
Probably because they were doing something they aren’t supposed to. Likely something punitive. Inmates don’t kill guards that treat them with decency or even respect.

@@LudiCrust. Spoken like a true criminal. He was a TRANSPORT officer who had just returned the criminal from the hospital. Transport officers usually don't work with or have usual contact with inmates inside the facilities. This man was in custody being accused of killing his ex-girlfriend. No need to question his guilt now. A 61 year old man with 38 years on the job don't usually last that long mistreating people.
He was a hero. He died trying to keep all of us safe by handling the most dangerous criminals. Rest in peace. I am so sorry for the family, friends and coworkers.

This how you know, even handcuffed criminals can still be dangerous. Where I live in Los Angeles, a county deputy was nearly killed by a handcuffed (behind the back) suspect, the deputy suffered major brain injury and was in a coma for weeks. Unarmed, NEVER meant, non threatening. So anyone who thinks otherwise, from what I know the public says after someone unarmed or running away from LEO's is still a threat to anyone.

In Los Angeles Sheriff deputies struck a woman twice in the face while she holding a 3 week baby and another slam a elderly blk women to the ground because she was filming from a distance..sometime you have mixed reactions for cops .
They get too comfortable and the inmates be waiting for them to relax. He has been on the force too long to make a mistake like that. SORRY for your loss but a lesson to others that think they can relax like that with these inmates

They don’t handcuff behind your back while wearing shackles, because you’re handcuffed in the front and shackled to your feet. However he shouldn’t have been alone! There should always be another deputy with you.
They're short-staffed because people don't want to work next to career criminals in the American legal system. MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCES with corrections officers, attorneys and others similarly situated is that THEY complain corruption is so ingrained that no decent person wants to work in this industry because they feel like criminals and hypocrites; or powerless to undo the decades of established criminality. Be mad that these are the facts but not because I published a comment about my personal knowledge and experience that explains some of the issues behind short-staffed prisons, jails, courts and police agencies. This officer should've never been sent alone to take that violent monster to a doctor's appointment...2 or 3 officers should always go with a violent inmate...and why wasnt't that monster handcuffed from behind? If you put the handcuffs in front of his body of course an inmate is able to strangle you
