I think Paul has a good point. When you attend a sale you will always pay a bit more becsuse you are there and you get the auction buzz! When you bid over the net/phone it's a clinical transaction , there's little emotion in the transaction 😢

I tend to think that you would do better to just stick with cars and trucks and perhaps just a little bit of high end memorabilia the cheaper stuff is best left to car shows or car boots my thoughts for what they are worth.

Be a little more pragmatic, only accept items with a minimum auction lot price of £100 or accept them with no reserve ensuring everything sells. Phoning for an an extra few pounds just isn't cost effective.

Great insight Derek & Paul. I think the the reason is as Paul said they are are not there to buy in person, so could take away. I know it's put me off, as as much as I like a trip up to see you, there is the additional cost. Could you consider going back to how it was? Thanks James

The problem with the old memorabilia and signs is, I believe the buyers for it are dying off. It's the same as the pre war cars, the values have dropped considerably because the older buyers are not there anymore. Younger buyers are looking at and more interested in the 50s and 60s items now

In my opinion prices went really silly during COVID 19, as people were stuck at home and built man caves and bars, then filled their walls with enamels. Same happened with the price of beer pumps and pub memorabilia, they were about treble the price they are now. I also think prices would be higher if the doors were open to the public, bid, pay and collect in one fell swoop.
@hillmangt1

My thoughts exactly. People are now out and about and spending their money on other stuff. Used car prices are also tumbling as people are getting back to a normal lifestyle and new cars are becoming available again.

I think Paul's right about the memorabilia and people being there in person ... is there any way you can get back to audience/in-person auctions again? Or is that definitely gone forever? In general though I think people just don't have the disposable income they maybe did a few years ago, or if they have then they're hanging on to it in order to protect themselves against more difficult times. As a result, the price of many items are dropping, with just a very few stand-out items making daft money ... we're definitely in a "holding or slightly decreasing" market just now, again except for the odd stand-outs, and the usual exceptions, like many 70s and 80s Fords ... when decent-but-nothing-special Cortinas and Capris are making £20k-£40k you have to ask yourself when the market is going to "adjust itself" in the same way it has for memorabilia. Also, can you give Paul a mic too? Can't always hear what he's saying. And thanks again - really enjoy watching the auctions :)

Like Paul says, doesn't matter if you're ringing back to sort out a provisional that's £20,000 or £20, it still has to be done, and for very little commission on the small value items, which is a real burden on your time to do it all. Perhaps you need to have a minimum value limit on the memorabilia to make it worth your while?

The reserve on items below £100, is mad. Surely, if sellers insist on a fixed reserve, to cover the telephone time contacting the parties a fixed payable amount (10%) of the reserve is payable if it doesn't make reserve and the seller stays fixed. Payable before the next auction or return to seller. Should get rid of the silly argument of £5 difference. No one will choose the fixed reserve, knowing they risk 10% if it doesn't get to reserve. Just a thought.

During covid when people had spare cash and wasn't afraid to spend it. Prices on everything was ridiculous. I know some of the rare enamel signs are sought after but c'mon? The repros are good in a garage, shed, fence whatever? Sherlock Holmes with his magnifying glass won't knock on your door calling you a cheap skate. Memorabilia on everything price wise is a joke. People putting patina. (Sorry rusty or rotten crap) in an advert means it's worth another 300% and I for one have had enough of it tbh! Unless you got cheap RS whatever? Then give me a ring lol

Same here in Cyprus (EU) we have to pay 19% VAT plus 10% duty and other charges on all imports from the UK. And what with the shipping cost it's just not worth buying cars from the UK anymore. I bought some new car parts in the UK for my 1949 MG TC last week, and the VAT was £443, although of course I only pay the 19% VAT/10% duty in Cyprus which was €543. So the UK lost the £443 VAT. The UK must be losing billions in VAT receipts since BREXIT.
