When I first saw Derek’s Kenworth at the Big Iron Classic Truck Show in Kasson, MN I was immediately smitten. He’d done a beautiful job of updating and modernizing the ‘69 A model, while still maintaining it’s vintage soul and gorgeous patina.
As if getting the truck itself on camera wasn’t enough; after talking with Derek I got to hear what Paul Harvey called, “The Rest of the Story”… Derek had called the phone number he’d found on a scrap of paper inside the truck thinking it was a long shot, but he was able to speak to the previous (and original) owner’s widow. She gave him the truck’s original paperwork, manuals, and tons of photos! An absolute goldmine for guys like me that geek out on history and old iron.
This truck’s story is best told by Derek in his own words, he’s done a magnificent job of restoring, preserving, appreciating, and updating a beautiful piece of history. To top it all off; he did the work himself and on a budget. If THAT doesn’t inspire you, check your pulse.
I’m proud to call Derek a friend. I’m proud of his accomplishment and love of telling a truck’s story. I know there’s hundreds more like him out there. When I find them, you’ll see it right here on the Flannel Channel.
