Does retinol exfoliate your skin? Does retinol thin your skin? Can retinoids cause depression? These are just a few of the regular questions I get about retinoids like retinol and tretinoin. That's why I brought in dermatologist Dr. Muneeb Shah of ‪@Doctorly‬ to play a game of true or false. Watch this video to see some retinoid myth busting!

I’ve been using 0.05% tretinoin for years. From the very first night I put it all over my face including around my eyes and never had any issue. No purges, no flaking, no irritation and I’ve used it like that nightly ever since without EVER missing a night. I don’t care what time I get home at night or how tired I am or where I am, I’m applying my skincare, it’s made a big difference to my skin.
@SpaceOutlaw_

Yeah some people have no issues at all with it. Lol I had not issues with Adapalene because my skin seems to tolerate a lot, while I’ve seen others with full on purging or irritation. then I started at .35 Tret then suddenly my skin become irritated and I had to stop my usual exfoliating completely and my oily skin almost become a dry skin type lol anyways I figured it out and I ain’t turning back. My skin isn’t dry nor oily tho but it’s actually more on the balanced side.

If you've been on .05% for YEARS, why have you/your dermatologist not increased your percentage?? Especially since you have not experienced any irritation....05% Tretinoin is usually the percentage people first start out on, then you gradually increase every 2-3 months, so I'm curious why you are still using the lowest percentage.

I *adore* using tretinoin on my neck. I started really slowly, applying it over moisturizer once a week, and now I can use it twice a week on cleansed skin. Haven't had any irritation or purging. If you can tolerate it, definitely do it!

I started tretinoin .05% during the middle of the pandemic while working from home. My skin was as dry as dry, cracked desert soil but nobody saw because I was hiding in my house, in the dark, like Dracula lol. It was really tough in the beginning because my skin was like "wtf are you doing?", but I held on and continued with it. Today, my skin is firmer and clearer than ever! I still get mild flakiness but it's nothing like when I first started. Everyone's skin is different and will react differently. I'd say to give it at least 6-8 months to truly see results. It's a process.

I have some input on the topic of depression + Accutane! I took Accutane at 14 and I experienced terrible side effects, including depression and suicidal thoughts. Granted, my family has a history of depression and I struggle with it now as an adult post-accutane. So I believe it mostly occurs in those who are predisposed, just my personal opinion!
@SpaceOutlaw_
@SpaceOutlaw_ 2 года назад
Another derm on RU-vid (dr. Drag I believe) said it could be just a correlation but it doesn’t necessarily mean a causation. Like the percentage that did get accurate then had depression (which was a small percentage) probably already had mental issue. Especially with teens at their age is when most start noticing mental health issues. But yeah def food for thought. I guess we’ll have to wait till there’s a more agreed upon conclusion In the medical field about it.

Then I started to focus on having a solid nourishing skincare routine (double cleanse, moisturizer, sunscreen). Then I started using retinol (Azure hemp retinol sleep mask) over my moisturizer. 1x for 1 week, 2x for 2 weeks, 3x for 3 weeks then every other day. After a year I bumped up to Natiriums Retinol Complex Cream and UGH AMAZING 🤩 I used it the same way as the azure for a year. I used Retin A as teen for severe acne. It was drying. I didn't get full control of my acne until about 20. I didnt use anything fancy - I started washing my face with antibacterial soap, with a facial brush, followed by oil of olay daily moisturizer with 30 spf. It fully cleared my skin. As I gotten older, I use the fancier, and a more elaborate process, which include lactic peels, vitamin C, to take care of hyperpigmentation, but I find retinol sparingly.

Dr. Shah, is it true that retinol8 is eight times stronger than retinol? Is ONE study of twenty two people enough to back up this claim?
@Doctorly
@Doctorly 2 года назад
Retinol 8 uses retinyl retinoate, which is a complex of retinol (inactive, which needs to be converted) and retinoic acid (active form). Theoretically, it should be more effective than retinol but the studies are limited. It won't be more effective than tretinoin though. At best, it can be just as effective as tretinoin but tretinoin has more data + withstood the test of time. Also, "8 times more effective" depends on which retinol formula they're comparing it to. In summary, I think it's good but it's no miracle compared to regular retinol!

It's possible that latisse and other prostaglandin containing eye serums may effect the underlying fat because the eyelid is a unique area of the skin compared to the rest of the face. What about retinol causing reproductive toxicity (this is mentioned on EWG)? Should it be a concern with a topical product?
@cassthompson3386
@cassthompson3386 2 года назад
That's why you can't use retinoids while pregnant.
@dietcoke00000000
@dietcoke00000000 2 года назад
@@cassthompson3386 Yes, I know, but in case of pregnancy the concern is about the baby, not the mother's reproductive organs. However according to some articles it can have an impact on the female reproductive system, without having a baby.

@@dietcoke00000000 I have wondered this too! A lot of products are marked as toxic on EWG because they contain retinol and I don't really understand why when it's such a popular ingredient.

Initially with all talks about slowly getting adjusted to retinol, I was going very slow too. But the process was so so slow. One day I just decided no matter what I'll use tretnoin everyday. I had flaky skin, dry eyes, a bit of head ache bcz I put it around my eye brows, few cystic acne 4 5. But after that...I can't tell you. I can see results by the day. Especially if have dark spots. I'm 23.

I've heard that you can, but very cautiously. But like you say, talk with your dermatologist first.

I'm 28 years old and I would love to incorporate retinol so I can slow down the effects of aging and help with skin firmness, plumpness, texture, etc. as I go into my 30s and beyond, but I'm scared I'm gonna mess up my skin (from irritation or the "retinol uglies") because right now I've perfected my skincare routine to the point where my skin looks the best it's ever been. Should I still incorporate it or do I wait until I absolutely need to?

I'm 27 years old and I just started using Tazarotene (0.045%) in October. I watched my fav YT dermatologists recommendations and followed their advice (using only a pea-sized amount, frequency every other day, using the sandwiching technique, applying on a dry face, etc.) and so far it's been great! My skin looks smoother and more even. I didn't even get the retinoid uglies! I experienced a tiny bit of irritation and flaking around my mouth but it was hardly noticeable. I just keep moisturizer on standby so I can apply it midday. I was also scared to start it because I didn't want to go through the retinoid uglies when I already had a good skincare routine figured out. But I took the plunge and just went for it. I SAY DO IT! :)

One night when I was so tired I was in “autopilot” mode as I was doing my skincare, I accidentally put a bha exfoliant and then put my 0.05% tretinoin at the end. I was fine the next day and still did it a few times after that to see if I got any kind of reaction, and my skin was fine lol. But I definitely DO NOT recommend it for anyone who doesn’t have the toughest skin lol

Excellent video! I have very mild rosacea without acne. I have taken great care of my skin all my life. Used sunscreen since I was in my twenties. I would like to start a retinoid. Have heard that the Avene retinaldehyde is very good for sensitive skin. Does anyone have experience with this product? Would love to know. Thanks

@@ja-t5220 I went on .025% after accutane and just now switched to .05% simply because of supplychain issues. Regardless, the only time I had a problem was when I got too cocky and tried to introsuce prescription strength azelaic acid, too. Starting tret and switching to the stronger kind, I had no purging, no retinoid uglies whatsoever. I did start off very carefully, like once a week, and buffered in the beginning, but at no point has tret itself got me into trouble.

"cells that would've taken longer to mature.. happen quicker;... as we get older it takes longer for our skincells to mature.." what does he mean by mature? usually skin concepts I get really quickly but this one isn't sinking in. this part made me slow down to 1.5x lol

Mature means to create a “new” skin cells. Retinol helps with skin cell turnover to happen quicker, because as we age the process of skin cell turnover slow down.
