Derrell Brown and the tragic story of the Baber-Bey family [True Crime]

In 2019 Grand Rapids police receive a 911 call where Keyona Griffin is whispering and clearly afraid for her life. However, when police arrive at the scene no one answers the door and there are no signs of forced entry so they decide to leave. About two hours later a second 911 call is received for the same address. This time it is Keyona's brother who just found Keyona shot to death in the home. They also find Keyona's aunt, Cherletta Baber-Bey dead in an upstairs bedroom.
Police quickly piece together that it was Cherletta's boyfriend, Derrell Brown, that is likely the killer and begin canvassing the area. Traces of Derrell's movements after the murders are found on CCTV footage but the police are unable to locate him.
Around a year later further tragedy struck the family when a house fire took the lives of Jacqueline Baber-Bey and Emareyon Cummings after a candle which was lit in vigil for Keyona and Cherletta set the house on fire.
At the time of this video Derrell Brown has still not been apprehended.

It’s funny how cops find a way to get into your property to harass you but won’t storm the castle when a woman calls 911 and says she is in jeopardy of being killed? Unbelievable!!

I think the ‘probable cause’ the police said they didn’t have to enter the property- was the terrified 911 call from the victim alerting them the killer had already killed her aunt! They failed her and she died because of it!!! Excellent production Kevin! Thank you!
@artdeco64
@artdeco64 2 года назад
They didn’t have probable cause. They didn’t see a victim, blood, damage to property, etc. That’s probable cause. Imagine you’re on vacation and some oddball, for whatever reason, thinking it would be funny, gets a burner phone, calls the police and says he is staying in your house and a murder is underway. The police bust through, breaking your door and windows, just to find there was nothing there. Would you be a little upset? Would you be screaming about the 4th Amendment and why it’s there in the first place. The police, by the laws governing our nation, did not have enough probable cause to enter or they would have.

Don't police enter for "wellness checks"...? This was, unfortunately, a case of "low income neighborhood in Grand Rapids" not a situation of improbability. So sad. Michigan is one of the worst states to have DRASTIC socioeconomic gaps and a particularly unpleasant racial undertone to almost everything that happens there. Really gross that this was 2019, so sad. And the house fire just continued the series of unfortunate events. 😔
@mommy2libras
@mommy2libras 2 года назад
They generally won't enter a house for a simple first wellness check but it depends on the situation. If they see anything outside or through the windows that leads them to believe the person inside needs helps, they'll enter. Or if they've been informed the person inside is sick or elderly and no one can get ahold of them but even then many times they'll ask permission from whatever family member called before just going in. And don't forget that in the past several years, there's been a lot of controversy over police just entering people's home, especially in low income neighborhoods.

In my state of Victoria in Australia they usually keep you on the phone until the Police get there in these kinds of situations. You only need to say you got stabbed and they come with the Special Operations Group (our version of SWAT) with their assault rifles. I know this because my mentally ill brother called emergency services and said he got stabbed 5 times by me with a machete. Within 10-15 minutes they came with a couple of ambulances, a couple of Detectives & the S.O.G's. That being said, he was on the phone with them until they arrived. They only do that if your call is prioritized, as in life or death situations. But idk maybe they hung up cause she was whispering and they were worried the offender might hear her, but then they could've been silent on the phone until Police arrive too.

Keyonna told the dispatcher that her aunt had been killed and that she was going to be killed. Why did the police not break the door down? They just left the scene when no one answered the door. Keyona was whispering to the dispatcher. The dispatcher should have known that when Keyona told her that her aunt was just killed and she was whispering, this meant that she was in grave danger. The state and police dept are responsible for Keyona's death. There were at least 5 officers on the scene and not 1 of them thought to break the door down. This is beyond inept !!

Even if I were single, I would never pick up trash from outside and bring it inside my home. I say this often: a woman should never allow a man to move into her home, especially when he has nothing or next to nothing to bring to the table. These losers will turn violent once you tell them to move out. I also don't believe in living together without marriage. Either they both bring nothing and build a life together as husband and wife, or they both bring the same amount to the table. After a certain age a man should be established. If he decides to get married, his new wife should be the one to move into his home.

Beyond infuriating. It is more difficult for a women to be taken seriously in SO many situations and often there is no fine line between being simply ignored or being labelled hysterical or crazy. That the officer assumes she’s crazy without ever speaking to her, because she says someone is trying to kill her.. if someone was crazy and imagining someone was trying to kill them, wouldn’t there be someone home and signs of a disturbance 7 minutes later, so the silence would not support that theory. Then the cherry on the cake, because her brother IS understandably hysterical, it’s solidly assumed the HE is a women.

If that doesn't constitute probable cause what the hell does??? Even IF it was a caller that needed to be "96'd"( think thats what they called it..or in other words detained under the mental health act), that should have given them a legal right to enter the home. Either way there was someone there in need of desperate help! I cannot imagine the police doing the exact same thing in a wealthier suburb.
