Some math tricks, some hypnotism, some fantastic art, but all of that dwarfs the preparation and showmanship this man gives the crowd. Why Derren is the best in the world. He has all of it!
For those saying “you can’t hypnotize everyone” of course you can’t but successful hypnotists are masters at spotting the most susceptible people, and then playing on the emotions and ignorance of the rest of the crowd - for example, putting a needle that way through fascia doesn’t hurt and won’t draw blood, but saying “of course it won’t draw blood bc it’s a wooden hand” makes it seem magical!
What a magnificent performance! A good reason to visit the UK. A very polished stage presentation and patter. Derren knows exactly what he's doing. His painting reveal was also brilliant!
1:05:47 - this moment I was told was 100% not planned, and the audience went with it. No prompt from Derren, who was off side at the stage getting the broom. A wonderful moment, which for her will be a memory she will cherish for years to come.
That's what he wants you to think, Drift. When you ask one person to pick box 1, 2, or 3, you cannot meaningfully influence them because you cannot be privy to the method by which they choose the number. Most of what he does - in his stage shows at least - is just a normal magic trick sprinkled with old-fashioned charm coated in a veneer of modernity. Presentation, Presentation, Presentation. Apologies if that's what you meant in the first place though. He basically just seduces the audience in to forgetting that they should know that much can be done with hidden cameras, secreted pagers feeding back to him from the cameras, hidden animatronics, false panels, sleight of hand etc.
No it’s not... he’s basically hypnotizing everyone, while being an incredible performer & a thousand other things. I know you want to act smart, but don’t diminish his ability to “memorizing & slight of hand” 🙄 that’s not even close to all that he must do in order to perfectly pull this off.
After I saw him apply the Monty Hall Problem in his performance, every bit of doubt in my mind is cleared about him. Legit this man is the one, with whom if I get to have conversation, I can die without any regrets.
Thanks so much for posting this. There was nothing worth watching on the telly tonight, so this was a nice surprise. Love the spontaneity of the audience singing happy birthday, gets me every time. It also occurs to me to say thank you for your book, Happy. It has helped me enormously:)
Most of the time, the things like that are just to make it seem more real, so the suggestion is more effective. Like when they say it won't affect you at home. Mostly, that so that it doesn't
He keeps dropping in this kind of chaff to mystify the crowd. It's in every show. If you catch these out, you feel smart while he makes an absolute fool out of you. The mad lad
I've was called up on stage once in a live stage show. It opened my eyes to a lot of how he does what he does. It took away my innocence of how amazing he is, but now I admire him in a different way. He's not a mind reader. He is true showman and an artist.
@@BethanyLowe8773 he asks people to answer some questions on a card before the show or in the interval. He can then choose his volunteers as he already knows stuff about them. He even admits it on this show that he asked the audience to give info but most people will glaze over that.
@@retro2vr Right, as soon as anything is written down all bets are off! (I just read him explaining it in Happy about evangelism.) How do you think the info gets to him from the cards? Somebody reckoned leg buzzer in Morse code...
@@BethanyLowe8773I assumed his team probably read the cards quickly and brief him which ones are worth using during the interval or before the show. But you're right, could be an earpiece too as real evangelists have been caught using them.
@@mklizzar And THATS why the manipulators can be so succesful, they can even get to to believe what you said you do. I could explain the Elvis trick but you would be so disappointed to lose your fantasy.
I watched a hypnotist on stage once. He had hynotized 7 guys when he accidentally dropped the mike. He said "Oh fxxk me" and what happened after that will haunt me forever.
He's like a real life Dr. House. Insanely talented, smart, and aware. I guess the way he can read people just falls into a blend of those qualities. I have no idea how he makes those guesses from cold reading. He seems like he's genuinely enjoying himself on set too. His brain is just so sharp. Very entertaining. I'm glad I get to see this.
its not down to intelligence. Its all down to understanding how humans as a specie behave and act. Its not as mesmerizing as you think. Its like studying any specie....after years of doing so you become an expert in it. Not only is he doing this, but lets remember, he is also placing his subjects within an environment of his choosing. Adding extra control on the subjects, from the very start dictating everything
id disagree, we know nothing about Derren, all we know is that hes an entertainer that has perfected his craft. One could argue it is the very lack of intelligence on his subjects that brings success to his career. Not only that, lets remember these subjects willingly paid to become involved.....hoping his ''magick'' works on them even before the show started. Being passive and wanting to be tricked, all works in his favour. Hence why its entertainment and not real. He is winning from the moment the tickets sell out to his show
I've always loved the usage of Isla Cameron's "O' Willow Waly" from The Innocents in this, it was my first time hearing it and I've used it several times since for various things. Haunting song. Glad to see it used in this context again, so many years later.
I was just checking to see if anyone else commented on this. I wasn't paying attention but the music kept standing out. I love this haunting piece of music.
Please release more of the live shows thats been done in the past and the spin off specials to, along with extra bits, miss watching them when there not on channel 4, and just gets me every time, love it

Unf as most entertainers or ppl who are their own brand have to keep up with society and what's hip or with novelties, necessarily something "new" doesnt make it better

He's also such a top bloke that after the audience sings happy birthday, I think he *touches her arm* when saying "never forget that, that's lovely" to lock in a powerful happy memory. Physical cue with an instruction is a hypnosis thing I think
Dude his shows give me chills more than any other magician. Because he even lets u in on the fact it’s all an act- then proceeds to fool u anyways- like how the fuck...
I love how much more playful Derren has become over the years. Instead of hawking pseudo-scientific mumbo jumbo about planting ideas through subliminal messaging, he now has fun with the crowd.
His entire act is deliberately peppered with pseudo science. For instance, the Monty Hall problem. Yes that would have real application in normal circumstances. But it's pseudo science to pretend that it has meaning in the workings of a magic trick! He constantly flatters the audience's modicum or largeness alike of knowledge about 'respected' fields such as mathematics, pretending that they could or should have any application in a magic trick.
@@Picnicl Which is absolutely brilliant because when it works, the mumbo jumbo sounds more and more credible until you can't help believing it. Hell, I believed mentalism was real for years, all because of Derren's act.
Derren has such integrity. Leaving in that brief shot of the net moving up above the audiences view, where the papers were swapped, could have so easily been edited out. Blaine would probably have done so. But Derren left that in the edit out of respect. He's a once in a generation performer but he has a once in a century level of respect for his viewers. Apart from the lottery win, which was a cheap camera trick. I'm still struggling to forgive him for that.
That's the only part of the routine that I can figure out. The net is a modified switch bag and the mechanism to activate it, is at the end of the handle
I find it very interesting, that Svengali felt it necessary to put what appears to me to be a "star" drawn on the right hand. Is that a "star" ? Very interesting! :) master, of masters! we so much love you, Derren Brown!

I admire him too! Have you ever read much about NLP (neuro-linguistic programming)? That's a really good starting point for beginning to understand what he does. It's fascinating actually.
Normally Derren states "No Stooges or assistants are used", this time "No Stooges or assistants in the audience", Hmmmmm, anyone else think that means he's using an assistant on stage?
I wish he would do an episode where he explains how he did these tricks. It would be very interesting and entertaining and show how smart he is how he came up with them
@@sfdntk the worst one was the time he had to guess what order coloured beads were in. he just put his hands over his eyes and when the person was putting in the beads they were distracted so he looked through his fingers. you're watching it and say, "wow how the hell did he do that?" sarcastically
@@randysager3660 The public really doesn't want to know. The reason why magicians don't reveal their secrets isn't because it's highly guarded. It's because the real explanations are almost always extremely dull and disappointing.
So much goes into what he does..and hes damn good at it!!! Psychology..research..understanding thought patterns and behaviours..showmanship..and so much more! Would love to see him back on TV..and have him play a trick or treat on me! Those episodes were amazing!! I salute you Derren.
I wonder how many people did that thing with twisting the back of their hand in the audience just like I did and noticed that it doesn't hurt or do anything on them as well :D
I love how Matt did the like shaky robotic arm movement while writing - so theatrical! Just proves DB is amazing at picking out the most suggestible people (which is how successful hypnotists work)
I could say he got lucky with that dude, but in fairness to him, a lesser experienced hypnotist may have went with the first lady who said that it scares her that she can't put her hand down. He held on to that and moved on to someone who had a physical manifestation of pain and thought 'bingo!'.
I was one of the balloon/cube people at one of the shows. I still don't know how I managed to pick the blocks that matched the number inside my balloon. It's been 13 years and I still stay up at night wondering!
