Richard Wagner (22nd May, 1813-13th February, 1883) was a German composer, theatre director, and conductor belonging to the Romantic period. He is best known for his operas, or "music dramas", for which he wrote both the libretto and music. In 1876, he founded the Bayreuth Festival to present performances of his own works.
