They like him for different reasons though. The communists because he is associated with class struggle against aristocracy and clergy as the dawn of the bourgeois society and democracy and the Natsoc because of him being a national myth, associated with the peasantry ("backbone of germanic culture") and anti-aristocratic principles as the Nazis were Social-Darwinists.

the "you will tortured and impaled" part? Its a common method to use fear in order to encourage the oppressed. Personally i dont think it really works if you are trying to create a utopia. The oppressor and the oppressed cannot govern because they both use fear to do so. The oppressor uses it to demonise the enemy and the oppressed use it to demonise the government.

and what is "actual freedom"? Freedom is a totally void term. Not sure who you mean by "imperialists" either. Of course class consciousness at that time looked different to nowadays. Feudal society had a different class composition, hence Thomas Müntzer and the peasant armies were obviously not gonna demand a communist society. But thomas müntzer and the peasant armies came pretty close to being the communist movement of their time, in the sense that they executed a class struggle that broke with the reigning theological and political order, supported by exceptional characters like knights of lower stand, most prominently Florian Geyer, who the song is dedicated to, often impoverished themselves although still living off of the labour products of their immediate servants, but sympathetic towards the social revolutionary cause of the peasants and Müntzer and his colleagues. It was not simply a form of radical Lutheranism, as Martin Luther himself opposed the peasants extremely. Müntzer branded himself as being a preacher, and used this role to spread his radical ideas to the masses and causing many of them to join the war against their feudal lords. It could be interpreted as christian communism, of which there still are forms even today. So not too surprising that something like this could’ve taken more primitive forms during a time in which there was no capitalist society or any critique thereof. But that the peasant movement was nationalist in any way is simply untrue, and anyone claiming the song on this basis is simply wrong as just outlined. People back then did not have nationalist affiliations but identified much more with their class stand and religion (aka being a peasant and Christian). Of course the nazis and any other nationalists will twist it into "the german people rose up against their oppression", as the nazis with their social darwinist worldview despise monarchy and anything connected to a "birthright" as people come to power not by "natural selection" but by birth. This is indeed a crude attempt of claiming a song and a history based on revisionism. It's a bit too easy to say "anyone claiming this song is wrong equally". Muentzer preached that all humans were equal, that the lords were simply living lavishly from the peasant's labour, and that they should be abolished and everyone work for themselves only, with land and natural resources not being owned by a lord or anyone else, and staying common. If this is "actual freedom", then it's pretty close to communism.

Well we live in historical materialism, and each system has contradictions in which people would want to move away from it, the medieval version was for away from serfdom and this song was a manifestation for class struggle of its time, and then later in the 1800s (specifically 1848) from feudalism to capitalism, and since then till today from capitalism to communism, the song is kinda applicable for class struggle for each society and its mode of production.

The singer is Ernst Busch, a famous communist and anti-fascist singer. This song has been used by the German communists, the SS, the People's Republic of Hungary (Geyer Flórián dala), East Germany... and German folk groups as well. I titled this version as "communist" since I know this was sung by Busch. There is another version on my channel that has been titled as a "folk song" since the singer was unknown. The song has a complicated legacy but is certainly left-wing (despite being written by a guy who would later turn into a Nazi) since its about the German Peasants War from the 1500s or so. It was (presumably) song by Busch in the aftermath of the failed Spartacist Revolution, which mirrors the failed Peasants Revolt, so no, in this is context it _would_ be considered communist. Whether the song by itself is communist is up for debate.

The song was originally created by Bündische Jugend, nationalist youth organisation, and was than widely used by National socialist party. However the anti-clerical and pro-peasant rethorics of the song caused, that it beacame popular also among communists, especially after WWII.
