+SuperCocksuckinggoog btw I'm not Brasilian and I don't speak Portuguese, so please avoid the "blah blah native speakers consider their language the best"
Portuguese/Galician is older than Spanish and was wide spoken at Iberia for centuries while Castellano was still enclosed to Castilla. Spain oldest national literature is in Portuguese - Cantigas de Santa Maria. Any language once sang by Gilberto can hope to be the most beautiful.
I thought I just didn't like the sound of super extended "modern" harmony, and then I discovered Jobim. Turns out everyone else is just doing it wrong hahaha. (Obviously that's an exaggeration, but honestly not by much)
E agora, tô morando no Brasil.
Upgrade2344 the song means "bad singer" or "i can't sing" in portuguese. I don't know much about the lore behind the song but one can conclude that he propably heard a lot of people saying that he is a bad singer. Nevertheless he wrote a song about it this. This starts with "if you say to me that i am bad singer, love. Know that this brings so much pain. Only priviligied ones has ears like yours and i have only what god gaves me." Is preety much irony. He is saying to the critics "great you have awesome ears but you can't write, play pr sing".
Keep in mind that is very hard to translate this song. When he says "só privilegiados tem ouvidos iguais ao seus". He is not talking about her ears fisically. He is talking about the ability that one can have to hear, interpretate and feel the music. I don't know a word or phrase in english that fits well in this point
Hi! I'm brazilian and the lore behind the song is like you said. A lot of people was saying that ALL the bossa nova singers was "um bando de desafinados (a bunch of outcast)", so he wrote this song. (Hope you understand my terrible english)
I’ve been a guitarist since 1969. His playing seems simple but his chord structure is completely virtuosic. There’s no flash to it, but he builds these incredibly complex jazz chords and harmonic motion with apparent ease. I’m so impressed. He was a genius.
João Gilberto always answered the same thing : "I always played samba". And after a brilliant concert of one of the top jazz pianists, a friend of mine asked to a great brazilian musician who was there : "why does it sound so awkward when he tries to play bossa-nova ?", same kind of answer : "he does'nt know anything about samba". Some people called bossa-nova "sambinha" (little samba) or "appartment samba"… Chords and rhythm are not only scores, it's culture.
“Just after this time Gilberto's father, upset by João's bizarre singing style and refusal to take "normal" work, committed him to a mental hospital. In a psychological interview there, Gilberto stared out the window and remarked, “Look at the wind depilating the trees”. The psychologist replied, “But trees have no hair, João”, to which Gilberto responded, “And there are people who have no poetry”. He was released after a week.”
@caprice.t Hi! Late reply here, but this quote is from Ruy Castro's book 'Chega de Saudade: A história e as histórias da bossa nova'. I know it has many translations, but i do not know how the title was translated. Hope you can find it with this bit of info! I'm reading it now and it is a delight.

There is no American equivalent to the sophisticated simplicity that Brazilian Jazz of this period offers. Gershwin can't even come close. This music never ceases to inspire that most delicate of perennial necessities called love.
Sophistication is an meaningless concept. Without american influences. Bossa nova wouldn't exist. Music is a subjective form of expression, different people will have different tastes.
greenwiggles the concept of subjective and objective when related to art tells me you have a limited understanding of the interdependence of both extremes and their defining aspects. You probably have a limited melodic vocabulary as well.
+greenwiggles ; I believe you are very wrong saying the bossa nova would not exist without American influence . You'd have to understand a lot of the brazilian culture to understand bossa nova, this is brazilian way of life, like America has theirs. This is like if a foreigner would try to explain jazz from new orleans..
+imaginativelads. People who compare different genres of music and claim one is better than another do not understand music in a global sense. Is a chair better than a bed? Is an apple better than an orange? Yes, this is how ridiculous your statement is.
@@greenwiggles actually bossa nova could exists without jazz, cause 90% of this cames from samba. The unique difference r the chords, which came from jazz. Bossa nova is the refined and pollute less brother of samba.
So beautiful to hear the actual Portugese Language and phrasing. I am very familiar with playing this tune in a Jazz context, but trying to get more of a handle on the authentic Brazillian style. There is a lot to learn.
An interesting note: Bossa Nova is actually not authentic brazillian style. The bossa nova back at the days was criticized by alot of brazillians as "american music" because of the relations to jazz that came from the west. Joao gilberto took the samba rhythm placed it on the guitar and mixed it with jazz chords and thats how bossa nova came alive..
Die Welt steht still. Pure Liebe.
I saw Joao Gilberto person in San Francisco late in his career. Alone, he mesmerized the audience, turning The Masonic center on Nob Hill into an intimate club with everyone leaning in to hear every detail. It was the show of a lifetime too see.. Thank you Joao.
Masterpiece. João Gilberto can make the most complex music sound like the most simple sound. Like a note that just shocks your brain with some weird sensation, "desafinado" challenges the melodic patterns that you may expect coming from any bossa nova song. Yet, there's something about this track... it invades the security of your ears, unleashing notes that shouldn't be together, and yet, are. Soulful, warm, beautiful... João Gilberto, what a genius.
+sega Well, all romance languages are unique and beautiful. Spanish is a gorgeous language, I mean, listen the music of Violeta Parra, she have songs that are complex in rhythm (irregular time signatures) and a natural metric in her poetic lyrics.
+sega French is pretty hard to translate in music. Portuguese is smoother. But there are quite different, not gonna determine the superioty of one language on another.
Brilliant. The story and character is so excellently conveyed through both guitar and vocals and the slightly "out of tune" composition is simply a work of genius.
Mauricio - Santo Andre S P.
Gorgeous. I came here to do some research on this tune, expecting to hear a nice performance (as to be expected) and I am blown away with how beautiful this man treats the melody and the way that he chose his chords here!
João Gilberto created the bossa-nova : the guitar rythm pattern, the harmony, the way to sing , the phrasing and the syncopation. This man IS the bossa-nova by himself !
the voicings and chord choices alone here are such a lesson. It's just so beautifully done.... I don't think I've ever seen a better exploration of the harmonic possibilities of the guitar than displayed here. Absolutely sublime
@@Muzikman127 Thing is that it's not just the harmony. If it was only the harmony, that would be enough. His placement of the melody with the chords is ridiculously laid back - very difficult to imitate this, and yet it sounds amazing. His guitar is constant, but the way he's singing the melody is master level. I realize that this is obvious, but I had to say it anyways. He gets so much emotion from laying back vocally, and rhythmically with the melody.
