He did study classical music a lot and his work is most often associated with those of Chopin and Debussy. But we should not forget to also mention Newton Mendonça who happened to be his childhood friend and a co-writer on some of his most revolutionary songs, including Desafinado. Glad to have you back Roy and thanks a lot for your continuous support.
Seriously... To play this and sing at the same time is just incredible. He was clearly a virtuoso at the level of Paco de Lucia, just not the same and of course not possible nor worth it to compare. Different styles, but the same way to make your eyes and ears wide open
My god, the richness of the harmony just blows me away. I'm in love with these chords. Thank you for your amazing work! Best Bossa Nova teacher on the internet, by far!
@@bossanovaguitar i am trying to figure out how to schedule a lesson, been having some trouble doing it, but i'll get there - unless - are you all booked up until doomsday?
Ah, this is one tough cookie. isn't it? I did quick research (not thorough, obviously) of dozen versions available on YT. Rarely played from this key, beginning with Emaj7. Usually it's from Fmaj7 (covers) or Dmaj7 or Ebmaj7 (Gilberto himself, as you noticed in your description). Is it possible that original version is recorded in different key (e.g. in Eb and track pitched in E) or in half-step down tuning (so Fmaj7 became Emaj7). It's very interesting because it seems that all the interpreters, including Gilberto in all later recordings and live acts avoid original key. Btw, this 'off-key' song's use of 'Blue note' (augmented 4th/diminished 5th) is very charming and usual in Blues. Sorry for this long comment and thanks for excellent share! Sretna i uspješna 2017!
Thanks for your post Tomislav. Original was definitely played from E since Joao used Emaj7 variation (02x14x), the same one as in Este Seu Olhar. This can be seen in one of the videos on YT where he performed this song on playback. Later on he switched to D and used that for the rest of his career. Hvala, također!
@@bossanovaguitar just saw this 4 years later. was very common at the time to tune half step down. lots of open chord variations i hear that wouldve been impossible without doing so. i imagine the percussive feeling of slightly looser strings was the idea behind it
your channel is perfect! exactly what I was looking for! do you happen to have written tabs for this song? its kinda hard to have to keep coming back to the vídeo everytime
Thanks for your post. Chord charts are available on bossanovaguitar.com .There are two versions of Desafinado, the one from here is labeled 'bossa nova guitar version' and the other version I transcribed from one of Joao Gilberto's live albums. If that doesn't help then register on bossanovaguitar.com site and I'll come back to you by email.
Hey! Thank's for all your work. To me, between all the pieces I've learned from your site, this is the more complex. Has a lot of rythmic phrases/batidas and I have difficulties of coordination to place my voice to sing playing it, especially with the 4 2 1 3 phrase...hope I'll can one day play it and sing it with fluency and flow.
thanks a lot. check out the Brazilian tutorials; search for Desafinado video aula tutorial. I must ask though, cause yours is different: is this the album chord voicings? I get lost having around so much chords to choose to each chord changes on different tutorials, but the worst part is to barely know what I'm doing and what functional harmonies are happenings at each second. I must get ashamed of myself quickly if I keep intenting to busk playing only this song on a loop for hours asking for money for it to become my main job. thanks a lot
Thank you for your comment. As I put in the description, the chords are combined from the chords Joao Gilberto used in the original recording and from some of the later, mostly live, recordings, transcribed to the original key used in the first one (later recordings he played in D, while the original is in E). Many of the other tutorials you find around are also fine, you can use whatever you like the best. Thanks again!
Como é que o cara consegue tocar o primeiro acorde naturalmente somente nas cordas 6,5,3 e 2, não tocando na 4, e ainda mantendo o ritmo? Tenho que treinar muito para isto!
Hi, your lessons are really great and you are a brilliant teacher! I wonder have you tried to tab the live version of this song, I mean exactly like J.Gilberto plays it :) It is in D and the first chord is a Dmaj7/F# followed by a straight E9, Em9 etc. Is there anyway one can upload alternate versions on your site ?
Thank you very much. One of the live versions tab (in D) is available on bossanovaguitar: www.bossanovaguitar.com/index.php?chords=desafinado.html&album=Eu%20Sei%20Que%20Vou%20Te%20Amar%20-%20João%20Gilberto I used several versions in creating this lesson in an attempt to take the best from all of them, while trying to keep the original mood of the first recording. As for Dmaj7/F#, Joao often used it interchangeably with Dmaj7, D6 and D6/9, you can do it as well. Thanks for posting here.
Don't know if you are aware of this, but alternate versions of some of the songs on bossanovaguitar.com can be found by moving the mouse pointer over the CD cover image in the bottom right corner of the tab. Sorry I didn't mentioned it before.
@@bossanovaguitar thats weird, here inn argentina desafinado means out of tune, didnt know it was different in brazil. i love your channel, please keep uploading great content.
Thank you! If you mean out of tune, the problem with playing chords on tempered instruments is they all sound a little bit out of tune, especially those that contain seconds and thirds (such as the last maj7).
Yes that was transcribed from one of the live recordings. João Gilberto usually played it from D later. You can switch between versions by hovering over the CD cover in the bottom right corner of the song chart. I have now changed the default version to point to the transcription I used for video lesson. This is labelled as Bossa Nova Guitar version as it's in fact a combination of transcriptions of multiple recordings, the first one from 'Chega de Saudade' album (played in E), the one from 'Getz/Gilberto' and several live recordings. Thank you for pointing this out.
Hey! Have you ever heard this version of the song? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-95nmLmYC8-w.html , I don't know which album this is in, but I couldn't find anywhere the chords to that intro, do you happen to have it? I don't know if you understand brazilian portuguese, but its a beautifull intro, it really fits the song Thanks as always!
This is the intro Jobim composed after the other author Newton Mendonça was already dead. I believe it was first recorded (as instrumental) on Jobim's first solo album "The Composer of Desafinado Plays". I wanted to show the original version here so I haven't transcribed that intro. Thank you for your comment, as always!
