Desert DPM Effectiveness

In this video we test the effectiveness of British Desert DPM in a woodland environment during the fall and winter season. Now obviously this pattern was designed and intended for a desert & arid environments. However, some desert patterns can be used in a woodland environment during the fall and winter because of their color scheme (Desert tiger stripe & 6 color desert I have found to be very effective here), in this video we see if Desert DPM falls into that category.

I've watched many of your videos on camo and they have really opened my eyes. The lighter colored patterns seem to be most effective in all environments. They match the background colors of well lit spaces yet don't stick out in shadows. Most importantly I've learned that no camo will make you invisible and the use of cover is the real key to avoiding detection. Maybe I've played where's Waldo too much with my kids but the human form sticks out like a sore thumb no matter what color it is to my eyes.

Beyond use of cover, staying still is such a powerful factor in going unnoticed.

I've found desert DPM to work best in sunny areas totally devoid of greens and grays like winter marshes, dry grassland and winter cornfields. Areas where darker patterns won't break up. In more wooded areas I've break it up with trousers of solid gray or mid-brown to look like larger dead fall

Great example of shape vs colour. The colour is perfect - it's the outline that gives a subject away mostly - the sharp lines of the hat brim, shadow under arm etc. Breaking up outline is crucial. The hide at 6.25 is amazing in terms of colour and outline..

Boom so true, colours perfect so the one at approx 3mins where his back is to you you cant see him at all but others like you said hat brim, arm line etc

I must admit i'm "Gobsmacked"! I never thought or considered in my wildest dreams that desert DPM could be effective in dry winter-like foliage.... I tried my best to spot you before you left your position (NO CHANCE OF SPOTTING YOU!!) Especially as the sun was shining, it enhanced the brown and tan in the disruptive pattern. Brilliant and informative video Brent, thanks.

browns and tans and some black> green camo, in a woodland environment. You don't see green deer or green bears or squirrels. Greens are too dark or the woods.

johnmackenzie1998 "Contrary to claims published in the usual blogs, forums, and wikis, Multi-Terrain Pattern is not meant to replace both temperate DPM and desert DPM. Rather, MTP is intended to replace only the No.8: Temperate combat dress; the No.5: Desert combat dress will remain in service." And I know for a fact that right now, desert DPM is still being used, not just in the odd mismatched ECBA cover. Desert DPM is retained for use in more sandy climates.

It depended upon which portion of the field you were in. One suggestion: lay out the uni and take some dry dirt and rub it into the tan areas. Was this a brand new uniform? That would account for the almost yellow cast which hid you well against the dry grass, but stuck out in others.

I saw you most of the time at first, then very few at all. Maybe 25% spot rate. I'll go back through these when it's been enough time that memory will have faded so it's not cheating, and I'll keep accurate count and post it for you. I think it's best when you do the tiniest flicker of movement a moment before standing up. That way you COULD still just be a random bit of moving terrain like a leaf or twig in the wind to the eye - if you're not spotted yet. I think it's a good way to conduct the experiment at least. It's been the only way I've seen you several times, I don't count them as successful. Watching these has given me a better appreciation for the importance of alertness as well as just how difficult, taxing, and scary it would be to actually have to worry about ambush from enemy soldiers all the time. Thanks for posting these, and your service.

Hmm, for some reason I wasn't subscribed I hate when RU-vid does that. Anyhow, this seems to be better than our 3 color desert camo. I think the amount of brown helps to break up the outline where the 3 color has to much lightness and in sun looks a bit too tan. I still love they way it looks along with the old chocolate chip pattern.

It's developed for desert so it's pretty impressive in your vid for it's not made for it but I was fooled a couple of times. See the stuff use in the Brittish " Are you tough enough desert" series, on you tube then you see where it really excells. There's a picture of a Russian sniper wearing this in a similar setting in dry tall grass and dead leaves. It was also somewhat popular with Russians in Syria. The background colour seems a little too light, but otherwise its high contrast and pattern is almost more suited for dry woodlands than actual deserts.
@angelevelinovkaloyanov2283
@angelevelinovkaloyanov2283 9 лет назад
Not too bad, but deffinitelly not ideal. The bright parts are too visible, even in the sun-bleached grass (brown parts are ok though). Vegetation is usually slightly grey-ish and the desert colour shines a bit. Whenever I couldn't spot you, it was due to the light around you or because of your hiding skill. The pattern itself wasn't so much helping as getting in the way. Also the lack of macro-patterns makes the figure appear monochrome from a greater distance. A lot of people I know use desert DPM pouches sprayed with grey/khaki paint though ant it works beautifully. Could you do a video on Sumpftarn?

Yeah, from what I’ve seen in these woods 3 color desert, desert DPM, & desert MARPAT, are all good desert patterns (what they are intended for) but tend to be too lightly colored for this particular environment. I think all three of these patterns can be used, but are certainly not the best choice.

Late to the party but here's my thought's. It's not very good in woodland, but works well in marshland environments. I put my DDPM in the wash with some brown dye. Now I have a light / dark brown shadow pattern. Nothing wrong with the pattern, it's just too bright. Regards JB.

964 / 5 000 In Poland, it has been written so far that this camouflage is useless, because in our country there are no deserts. In the conditions of Central and Eastern Europe, Woodland, A-Tacs FG (which was appreciated by Russia, which bought the rights to it in 2020), Pencott Green and darker versions of Multicam perform best. But notice what Ukrainian soldiers are wearing now. Digital camouflage in colors similar to DPM Desert, introduced for use in 2014. This camouflage was designed for the autumn and winter period.

First pattern I find ineffective for your area. I spotted you within the first three seconds 8-out-of-10 times - in the first second 7-out-of-10. It performed better in the shadows and I think it might have worked better for you a month ago but I'm not sure how much better. Looks like an excellent pattern for desert environments, tough. Keep 'em coming, man.
@Brent0331
@Brent0331 10 лет назад
I put it there with 3 color desert & desert digital MARPAT, they’re are extremely effective in the environment they're intended for but are probably just too lightly colored to blend in effectively in these dark browns and tans in this woodland environment.

The combat shirt (The one with the DPM sleeves with moisture wicking material for the body) that I’m wearing in the second half of the video is an excellently well made shirt. I’m a big fan of Desert Tiger Stripe & ATAC-AU in the fall/winter here. I’ve done videos on both during that time of year if you’re interested in seeing them in action. As far as Khaki, I’m not sure man, it might be a tad too light. The reason I say that is because 3 color desert seems to be very light in this environment during the winter and I would say that the light tan in 3 color desert are comparable to a khaki color. Coyote tan seems to work very we’ll on the other hand, you can check out my video on Coyote and to me it seems to preform very well if that is an option for you.

What are your thoughts on the Desert Digital Camouflage pattern?
@Brent0331
@Brent0331 9 лет назад
xavierprotocols I like them, I've used digital MARPAT in the Marine Corps for years. Very effective camouflage. I'm not saying I prefer it over others but its good in my book.

Which chest rigs work well for the Fal?
@Brent0331
@Brent0331 10 лет назад
Anything that will accommodate M14 mags should accommodate FAL mags, my rig is old and I’ve had it for a long time. It was made by a company called TAC-FORCE and I bought it from OPSGEAR (They no longer carry it). My suggestion is you get a MOLLE chest rig and just find MOLLE pouches designed to hold M14 mags, and that will hold your FAL mags just fine.

seses 1 3 2 Hey, you even made Americans. I think DPM is superior to our 3 color desert. I find our 3 color desert has to little brown and tends to look like sand colored uniforms. I still think it looks awesome though! But the DPM pattern is killer. Proper job guys. Also thanks for British humor.

Not very effective in this environment. Was able to easily spot you within a few seconds on most takes. And that is a rare thing with your videos. Most patterns you test I have zero idea where you are until you move.

+westwing23 Thanks for watching, just remember that this pattern was intended for desert use. Sometime these desert patterns are effective in woodland environments when the vegetation has died and there is a lot of tan and brown.
