Saddam Hussein orders his Navy, made up mostly of coastal vessels, to flee to Iran, fearing that they will be destroyed in port by coalition forces. The Royal and US Navies and Royal Canadian Air Force respond to ensure they don't reach their destination. The video covers the "main" two days of the destruction of the Iraqi Navy, the 29th and 30th January 1991. There were further Lynx victories against ships on other days not covered here.

Technically a ship is nothing more than a very low flying airplane. If there's enough signature, why shouldn't it lock on? 😁
@Batmannerz
@Batmannerz 3 года назад
@@RubenKelevra It did lock-on, but the missile's attack profile characteristic isn't designed for ships, hence why it fell into the water before hitting the target. It doesn't just go in a straight line from point where it's fired from. My guess: The missile lowered itself to fly level into the ship. I believe that missiles are programmed to match the altitudes of their targets so they don't have to climb or dive into their target at the last second, they only have to match the altitude and heading of their targets and hit 'em straight on. It's easier to take out a target in a 2 dimensional space than a 3 dimensional space, remove the latitude and it's just a matter of flying towards it and matching its movements (if it suddenly climbs or descends). Problem is that when you do this with a ship, it'll hit a wave and get wrecked. I'm no missile expert, but this is what I think happened. I know there are different attack profiles for Air-to-Ground weapons so that obstacle clearance isn't an issue.

When you put it that way, it reminds me of the WWII incident where a US destroyer defeated a Japanese sub with potatoes. The destroyer originally planned to ram the sub, but they changed their mind and found themselves alongside. The Japanese crews woke up from a nap on the deck, and both crews realized they were unarmed. The sub started arming their deck gun, so the Americans went for anything they could to distract. The only thing nearby was potatoes, and the Japanese thought they were grenades and hurriedly threw them back or overboard. It bought enough time for the destroyer to move far enough to shoot and later sink the sub.

That’s the thing, I could see the ship crews deciding to head to Iran, but why would Iraq send them there? I mean it’s not like Iran would ever give back the ships, or likely even the crews. So it’s still an Iraqi loss, if nothing else stick them in ports and either use their weapon systems for defense, or just pull the crews to use on land.
@jackdonith
@jackdonith 3 года назад
@@johnpatz8395 the ships that headed to Iran probably hoped that the Iranian airforce would see the NATO airforce getting in their airspace and attack them. Once the aircraft was no more, the ships would try to get back to Iraq. As for your suggestion. I just said something similar in a comment. But since the captain was ordered to sail agains the enemy and he was in the middle of the sea already, instead of sitting comofrtably in the base, he did the only thing he could think of.

@justalonesoul5825
@justalonesoul5825 Год назад
@@nizloc4118 4:00 It was Saddam who gave the order himself to his navy to flee to Iran, according to the video. The coalition most certainly couldnt attack ships in Iran territorial waters for escalation and "rules of engagement" reasons. Could Saddam still alert Iran of his intention at the time? I would guess so. Could the intention be evident enough to Iran anyway? The ships could very well contact the iranian officials/military interlocutors directly at proper range and inform them that they seek refuge or some diplomatic reason to get to safety, in all cases. It was quite obvious for Iran that it was not getting attacked by those ships, under the circumstances. Coalition bombardements had started destroying Iraq already for a full week. And once without any air cover, the iraqi navy was sitting ducks in the water. Crossing that stretch of water indeed proved fatal to all those ships, and the efficiency of the destruction is nearly painful. It was not even a fight. They even went "hey what the heck lets test this air air missile as an anti-ship for the lolz, balls to the walls!" 🤷

@MrMattumbo
@MrMattumbo 3 года назад
@@lordgarion514 It was an Air-to-air missile not an anti-ship missile, the radars are completely different. Targeting something at ground/sea level requires filtering a ton of literal background noise from the radar image to maintain an accurate lock, something the missile's radar is not designed to do well enough to hit a small boat. The pilot probably got the idea because AMRAMs have been shot at ships before, but that was surface to surface where the target was silhouetted against the horizon. Either way, we waste that kind of money all the time, $80,000 for a Javelin missile to take out a Toyota Hilux, $120,000 for a Hellfire to take out 1-2 guys, $1 million for a Tomahawk to take out a pile of dirt the enemy uses as a bunker... Most of our weapons in current conflicts are a giant (yet very effective) waste of money compared to what their use costs the enemy. At least those AMRAMs usually take out planes worth exponentially more than the missile, in the Gulf War everybody got their money's worth out of them even if a few failed.

What is not known is that this crew also detected an Iraqi “suitcase radar” being used onboard 2 hijacked merchant vessels - still moored to their sea jetties. The OSA II boats likely had AA guns on them (1960-ish technology). These fast attack boats are designed to attack quickly and flee...not for defensive capabilities. The boats could be a serious threat to the boats of the navies, but the airplanes had a distinct advantage over them.

Not in every language. As another commenter said already - In my language (Latvian) the word for 'battle' (kauja)and the word for 'to slaughter' (kaut or nokaut), are derived from the same root. In other words, slaughter is expected to take place in battle.There's no implication that a 'battle' should be fair or evenly matched.

The British Sea Skua missile was a weapon concept/capability that the USN didn't have. A small, small helicopter launched guided anti-ship missile, much smaller and lighter than a full-on anti-ship missile like Harpoon for example, capable of destroying smaller craft (particularly fast attack craft) and damaging much larger craft. The concept and the missile performed well in the challenging South Atlantic conditions of the Falklands War and clearly in this incident. Sea Skua in RN service was upgraded throughout its life with the RN and sold to several happy foreign customers. It has now been withdrawn from UK RN service and is in the process of being replaced by the new Sea Venom missile, an altogether more modern and capable missile. I'm sure you all get the relevance of a missile much more capable than proven effective Sea Skua.

Well in all fairness, we'd learned a few things since the Falklands. The Type 42 destroyers (I think _Gloucester_ and _Cardiff_ were mentioned) had been fitted with a pair of Vulcan Phalanx guns and MUCH better jammers and chaff since 1982 and their Sea Dart SAM system had been much improved too. The Type 22 frigates ( _Brazen_ in this case) had the Seawolf SAM system which was specifically designed to shoot down sea-skimmers. Sea Skuas were specifically designed to allow small helos to kill missile-armed FACs before they got into launch range.
