The US Navy is back in the Gulf of Sidra to challenge Muammar Gaddafi's "Line of Death" in a Freedom of Navigation Exercise. When a pair of F-14 Tomcats are fired on by Libyan surface to air missiles, Operation Prairie Fire is launched - an air assault against Libyan SAM batteries. The Libyan Navy moves out to challenge the US Surface Action Group.

That’s not military doctrine, that’s policy set from the civilian leaders. The reason that there is a thing called “Freedom of Movement Operations” is because countries think that they can supersede international agreements about territorial waters by proclaiming “kill lines” and what-not. What is insane is how many tin pot dictators think that they can unilaterally declare something is theirs.

In '86 I was deployed to an Engineer Battalion in Germany. When this happened, we were ordered to harden gate security. So, like any good Combat Engineers, we took our M728 CEVs (basically a M60 tank with a bulldozer blade) and parked them in the gates entrance. Dropped the blade and locked and loaded the Ma Deuce. A German national turned in fast, saw a 60 ton roadblock and promptly reversed. It was funny as hell in a tense moment

@HVAC Quality Assurance To be fair to him, there wasn't really a good course of action for Libya to take. They could either let America invade them unopposed, or they could make a disasterous counter-attack. Both bad options.
@fortusvictus8297
@fortusvictus8297 Год назад
The USA paid for this dearly. There was a lot of pecker measuring in all of this, but the end result is Gadaffi doubled down and formed financial connections with groups advocating terrorist tactics to circumvent these military showdowns. For further information, check out the 'Lockerbie Bombing' and later 'Benghazi'. These flexing exercises on both sides did cost American lives, for no demonstrable gain.

Another amazing video, Ops Room! I'm a bit perplexed by the Libyan strategic thinking in this operation, especially on the water. It seems likely to me that sending individual small ships one at a time against the group is in no way playing to the strengths of Libya and is just destined to allow the CSG to devastate each one with their aircraft. Why not strike from multiple angles simultaneously? Bizarre actions.

They were not given permission to fly over France, Spain or Portugal, so they had to fly west over Wales from their base in England, before flying down the Atlantic around Southern Europe into the Med before attacking Libya. Something to remember is that most modern ships have very limited armor, perhaps some splinter protection but not much more. Rockeyes were top-attack anti-tank cluster bombs, so I can certainly see their bomblets penetrating the superstructure, bridge, and deck of small surface combatants (to say nothing of our aluminium-wonder LCSs). I would be unsurprised if more modern guided anti-armor CBUs are easily capable of, for example, penetrating VLS cell doors with their bomblets' explosively-formed penetrators.

Excellent video as usual. I remember this happening when I was in high school but I was completely unfamiliar with this kind of detail. I thought we only destroyed the sam battery and damaged a ship. I did not realize there were this many encounters. Not really sure what those Libyan ships were thinking charging straight at the fleet…..

Remember in every naval story after about 1950 or so there is SIGINT and COMINT that is never discussed. It is unlikely they had any radio communication that was not a US Arab speaker trying to pass as their commander.

Thus was a fun time in italy. We kinda had standing agreements with geddafi and we were 'pissed of' of other nations interfering with our sphere of influence, regarless of what lybia was actually doing, even if sometimes they skirmished with us (a crashed lybian mig 23 was found in 1980 in italy for example, a still enigmatic crash also). More or less due to these events and a SCUD launch to lampedusa island (crashed well away from the island and interpreted as informal communications from lybia) when US bombed gheddafi palace gheddafi was apparently informed the strike was imminent by the italian PM which learnt it from US contacts. Also the previus year the sigonella crisis had took place, with some lybian terrorist taken by american military which were surrounded by italian police forces which were surrounded by american special forces which were surrounded by italian army forces. Or something of that lines i'm unsure right now.

Lockerbie victims don't get to enter the chat. Or countless others from the 80s and 90s. Or Benghazi which was tied to groups that gained support from Gadhafi after all of this mess.
