I’m reading Desi’s autobiography right now, and his life story is truly incredible, especially all he went through. He called the conga his “dance of desperation” because he needed to think quickly to avoid getting fired and drown out his horrible sounding bad Xavier Cugat sent him to play. One dance started a craze and influenced our culture. 🎉❤

Not only my dad was a Congero, he also played Bongos, and Maracas. He was also was the lead singer in the band(s) that he played in. This was in the 50's to the early 60's before he high tailed it to Mexico. He was, one might consider the Desi Arnez of Santa Barbara, CA. I was told by someone that knew him that he played with Tito Fuentes. And my dad was a womanizer as well like Desi Arnez. Everyone told my mom not to get involved with him. If she had listen to them I would not be posting this comment.

Little do people know, when as Lucy was blessed successful on radio FIRST then on screen, Desi was a PIONEER behind the scenes. He pioneered the use of multi camera set up, founded Desilu with Lucy. And IMO, a underrated actor :) Sorry, I had some 'splainin to do' haha

Desi Arnaz was so wonderful in this ! All these people unify under the seductive spell of the conga. Lucky for us, Desi carved out a great career for himself later in life because the movie studios didn't know what to do with him.

I thought I spotted Lucy in the crowd at the very start of this clip, but then I thought - no, I'm just thinking that's her because she was married to Desi. But the shot near the end shows she really IS there, ironically. I assume this musical number occurred because the Conga was a big fad in the USA in 1939-1940. But it's an odd mix of Cuban music, a college pep rally (with Desi dressed incongruously in a football uniform) and a western setting that presumably is supposed to be someplace like Arizona.
@my2cents2u
@my2cents2u 7 лет назад
This is where they met (she was 29, he was 23), resulting in a whirlwind romance and marriage. Desi was actually hugely responsible for the conga craze. You're close on the location - it's set in New Mexico.

He himself said on an interview on Johnny Carson that the conga line was something Cubans created in their Carnival celebrations. He said most of the country would go to Santiago for the celebrations and the best conga lines - the implied or veiled suggestion is that the conga line was an Afro-Cuban creation because Santiago was predominantly Black Cubans.

I like Desi - he knew relatively little about the music he was hybridizing, compared to real, respected band leaders like Cugat, Machito, Miguelito Valdes etc But he had looks, charm, chutzpah and the great advantage over most important Latin musicians of being both upper-class and white complexion. To be quite honest, Desi was not the best of singers, and he was not the best conguero, obviously, but he gets credit for introducing Afro-Cuban music to the masses on television, which in the 40s was unheard of, if you lived outside NYC or Miami at the time.
