I’m 74 later this month, and it makes me feel a whole lot better reading about all the 42/43 year olds in the comments feeling tired after a few activities in one day! 😅 I also think there must be something in the alignment of the stars right now, because over the last two weeks I’ve ripped out more than I’ve knit. I’ve been thinking I’m past it and just about to give up. So it helped me immensely to see you struggling as well with colours and what sort of ribbing looks best etc. Thank you for sharing. You’re a breath of fresh air Summer, and your enthusiasm for socks is infectious. I look forward to Part 2… and I’m away now to cast on another sock. ♥️💕♥️💕♥️💕🥳
I agree with @margarethastings3332. There is something in the air, or the planets are out of whack! I’ve ripped back the Cozy Classic Raglan about 5 times cause I keep making stupid mistakes! You were very gracious in your admission and really appreciate that! Thanks for showing this side of things as it makes us feel better when we mess up!!! I’ve never known anyone to knock something out of the park the first time! Maybe you’ve been just darn lucky before 😂😂😂 Keep on delivering for us Summer. Inspirational! Love your stuff!
I just found your tutorials and I just want to say , Don't ever doubt yourself, you are so talented and most of all you're so cool. Your personality is so sweet and calm and then I see your nose ring and tatoo's! I just love you!
Your honesty is refreshing and eye-opening and real. Thanx for showing us your process. We are learning everyday, regardless of what we do. Hooray for you and all of us who try, and keep trying!!!
I am 77, soon to be 78, ugh. Oh well, better tha. The alternative. I love knitting socks. I am trying to knit 2 pairs a month, trying to make sizes appropriate for different family members. Love that you are from Oklahoma, as I am. Let's knit socks!!!!!
“I’m 43, I can’t do two exciting things in one day.” I am also 43 and deeply feel this!! I, too, would need a relaxation day after a day with two things in it!! The socks are looking great and looking forward to the pattern. Have a great weekend!!
I really appreciate how you openly talk about being anxious in some settings. And you do it with humor. I am similar in my anxiety, and my 10 year old daughter is too. It’s so helpful to just know it’s not only us, and that we can talk About it and laugh. I’m 46 and also cannot do more than one thing that’s exciting a day, and now I forget how old I am! Recently I thought I was 47! 😂😂😂
Haha! Yes, I agree about beans on toast…. Another British goodie is beans on “chips” or French fries! Who knew!? PS. Red/pink yarn forever! And I love your little knitting assistant 😘😘
So glad your book signing went so well!! I 100% agree with you about do-overs. It's a bit of a bummer to finish something and not have a finished object to wear but you learned valuable things along the way so there's absolutely nothing lost. Plus, if you love knitting like we all do, what difference does it make if your knitting something again or knitting something new...IT'S ALL KNITTING!!! It's amazing!!!!
I have thrown out so many partially knitted socks - they probably equal all the socks I’ve ever knitted! But I keep going, cuz hobby’s dont need to be so serious!
Love your podcasts. Liked the stripe colors in the sock but the gray heel and toe took away the zing of the sock. Just my opinion. I am looking forward to see your next creation i,m sure it will be amazing.
❤ I sure enjoy your podcast! I love knitting socks too, and it is so fun to see your design process. P.s. my oldest daughter, who is nearly 30, is also named Summer.😊
You are so good!!!! I have been knitting socks off and on for 30 years. I’ve been bit by the sock bug and wanted to try every way possible to make socks! I’ve tried many looms , they work but s l o w!!! I originally learned on dpns. So I had trouble with the whole cable concept. I’ve tried to do magic loop. And tried to follow written instructions. Thanks to your video I did it!!! I’m so proud of you and me right now!!! I’m loving it!! The next goal is two socks at the same time on magic loop. But so far I’m good with this and my cable adjustment!!I’m getting your book! I have the chaio goo sock needle set but it was not as easy as my dpns. I bought the long 37 cable and used the three inch needles. I feel like I did when I learned to ride a two wheeler 63 years ago!!!
Love your sock planning! I plan projects in a similar fashion. I also hear you when talking about doubts and anxiety. I love your podcasts. I feel like we are sitting around talking and knitting. Still waiting on Amazon to send me your book-can't wait to get it.
Baked beans on toast, a British staple!! Preferably Heinz or Branstons, with cheddar cheese. Cheese on toast, another great lunch/ snack over here. Sadly having to wait for your book until May over here- it’s on pre order …Thanks from 🇬🇧for the great channel.
I love your design process however it turns out - ironically, I love this sock and find that there is for me a nice balance in the width of the white before the gray heel starts, it really works for me - but it is so illuminating to see where it does not work for you and what you will do next. I find it so charming to get to see your design instinct and thought process, it is where creativity is born and it dawns on me that maybe some self-doubt is essential to the process to let you be open to what else could impel you. It occurred to me about car knitting - have you ever considered trying dramamine or a scopolamine patch to see if you could avoid the carsickness? I am a serious introvert EXCEPT when I go to monthly Sock morning at one of my LYS in Tucson, Arizona, because I am so entranced at what everybody is working on I forget to be shy. Come visit Tucson, we have In-N-Out here (I happen to have never tasted one because I don't happen to eat hamburger but my brother can't get enough of them when he comes to town!) and you would find a plethora of sock knitters who really resonate with whatever you are dreaming to do. Thank you for invigorating my sock knitting to the stratosphere! I am 68, feel 43, have been knitting socks for 13 years now and it is a way of life. ♥
thanks for sharing the sock experience,,,looking forward to part two - In & Out, love that place , it's where i live, hope you try all the secret menu items next time you go! While you knit, I ordered my yarn for my year of sock knitting with you! I will gather and plan while you finish the next sock - see you soon Summer! Hope you come to Southern California!
Thank you for your honesty. Now we know there is more to designing. I have unknit more things in the last 2 months than I have accomplished /finished. Maybe I was attempting projects over my ability while I was trying to broaden my skills. Anyway it is reassuring to see your process. Thank you so much.
Thanks for sharing your process with us! It was interesting to see the design unfold, and although I have no intentions of becoming a knitwear designer, it's good for anyone to see the snags others can hit. It also underscores the value of the work behind your business and that of other designers, all of the non-starters and maybe-nots that we don't generally have any awareness of, but that need to be built into the remuneration for designers' work. I look forward to seeing the process continue next week...
Hi, my name is Liz and I’m from Southern California. In n out is my favorite fast food, we have it almost every Friday 🫢 I am a new subscriber, and I really enjoy your channel. I love the colors you chose for the stripes, I thought they looked fun!.. can’t wait to see what the end result will be, I’m sure they’ll be fabulous. 💕
Summer, you empower all of us with your honesty and sincerity. Thank you. We all want to become better sock knitters and hearing someone of your calibre talk about your design journey enables us to grant ourselves more patience when we encounter problems and end up with socks which are less than what we had hoped they would be. I am a fairly new follower of your channel. Thank you for the seeds that you have planted in me as a sock knitter. I look forward to the journey ahead, and I am certain that I will be a better knitter because of what you have shared with us in this video. Thank you!
Ok, just discovered you over on IG, and just wanted to say that I love you! I related to so much in your video (I’m 44 and can totally relate to not being able to do two exciting things in one day 😂….and anxiety! 😝) Your hilarious and I can’t wait to knit one of your sock patterns!
I love how you talk about your design process. It rings true for me as I look back at how I explored my own design process over the years of quilt making. Now, playing with sock making, I feel I have been set free to follow my own ideas again with a smaller, more manageable, body friendly art form. Thank you for being and sharing who you are!
Hey Summer, you said you get sick knitting in the car. Me too. Have you tried Sea Bands? They are acupressure bands you wear on your wrists and have a little plastic button that pushes against the inside of your wrists. I swear buy them. I have always gotten car sick if I try to knit or read in a moving car but these do the trick for me. I love your socks and your videos!
I love your podcasts! I'm 51 so an exciting day to me is just getting to knit! Lol or crochet, or embroider...I have to push myself to do the more exciting things! I travel full time in an RV with my hubby, so I look for yarn shops at every stop, to shop and to see if they have open stitch times...I find the company of other knitters so refreshing and uplifting! Also got your sock book last week, so I'm very excited to get started on some new socks! Thank you for doing all that you do and inspiring all of us!
I'm 42, and yep, no double exciting activities in one day for me anymore!! Loved seeing behind the scenes and your design process - I'm a jeweller and seeing how other people work and develop ideas in different media is so cool.
I love this! A true designer experiments and it doesn't always work. In the first second or two when I saw that final sock, I thought, it's too top heavy. Ah well! I look forward to what you develop next! (And congrats on your book! It's very hard to find, telling me it's selling very well!)
We gotta find a way to get you to Montclair NJ, to my local yarn store called Yarnia. It's overflowing with yarn nerds like us. You would feel so welcomed and at home and you'd be smothered with love! Thank you SO very much for all the good vibes and truth you bring to RU-vid and to knitting. And thanks for all the little pearls of mental health wisdom. You're a real little gem!
The best part of designing is the freedom to decide if its a hit or miss for you and feeling okay about your decision! Can’t wait to see where you finish next week
oop i see myself in the mckinney knittery footage! it was so great meeting you!! also you're right....i still like the sock lol but yeah the ribbing is too loose ): i really don't hate the colors though. they're definitely giving vintage vibes.
Hello, thank you very much for sharing your design processeur, it’s great! Living in France, i’m waiting to receive your book i pre order on Amazon, i’m super happy, i’m a beginner socks knitter, i like a lot your designs, i particuly like the hibernation DK sock🤩👌 Excuse my english 😂 Thanks a lot!
It was so great meeting you at the Tulsa book signing! You did a great job! As an anxious person myself, I admire how easy you make it look, even though I know it’s not easy. Loved your comment about being 43 and. It being able to do two things in one day. I am 46 and one thing (away from the house) is about all I can handle physically, mentally, and emotionally! Very cool your son got to play at Cain’s!
Thanks for sharing the process of your sock design. Sometimes ideas just don’t gel and as you say it is all learning ❤ I’m glad your book signing went well. 😊🧦🌷
I absolutely love your work - you've totally re-ignited my joy for hand-knitting socks - thank you! On a food-related note - he beans & toast you were munching on looked absolutely delicious and I've been craving them for the past week. May I ask what recipe your husband used? I'd love to make up a batch.
Oh dear! I love your videos so much. You're so relatable. Don't we all have those little voices in our heads? What if they don't like me...what if I say something stupid? I wish I could give you a hug! You're amazing at what you do, don't let your doubts hold you back. Keep moving forward. I look forward to your next exploits and appreciate you taking us along.
When reading or knitting in the car, I keep my head up so as to have the openness of the outside scenery preventing me from feeling like I’m in a moving box. I hope that helps. I love to knit on long car rides. AND I know what you mean about In-Out. I lived in an In-Out state and then moved to one that wasn’t 😟. I’m now back in one and so love the burgers! Thanks for the video!
Summer Lee… I am so happy for you! 🎉I would have loved to be in that lineup and have my book signed by you! I am wearing my pink and orange socks as I watch this video. These colours together are totally out of my comfort zone but I love them! ❤️
Very enjoyable video! I’m 67 and am still recovering from a busy but fun day a few days ago! I’m looking forward to next week to see what you came up with 🌼🌼🌼
I think you’re just human. I am significantly older and no longer multi-task or plan a full day. Love the yarns you got. I love fingering/sock/sport yarns. They are yummy!❤❤❤
I enjoyed this so much ! Your honesty and genuineness is so appealing and appreciated .- I could never be a designer- I rip back enough just trying to follow patterns! 😂
Do you ever knit two at a time socks ? I’m already part of the magic loop devotees (all hail the loop 😂) but I can’t decide if I like taat or if it’s more work than it’s worth. Love your videos!
Love your videos…a couple of questions: 1). Do you use any sort of special technique for weaving in ends as you knit when working on socks with multiple colors and I’d also like to understand what/if you’d recommend a slip stitch technique for reinforcing the ball of the sock. Thanks so much!
I ordered your book and started reading it. I'm a beginner sock knitter and made one pair of sock which ended up being too large. I look forward to trying out some of your patterns. I do love your videos also.😊
Summer, you crack me up! Loved this video. I'm knitting a pair of your ribbed socks from the book as I watched. ❤ Hey, can you tell me/us what kind of cast on you use? And I was thinking how much I loved the simplicity of the inspiration sock! But you're so creative and clever. I can't wait to see what you come up with. One more thing! I was watching Tuesday Knit Chat Cafe with Knits and Pieces. You will love their latest video because they mentioned you and the book several times. The gals are casting on your patterns. It was just so fun to see them so excited about it. I was cheering here all by myself! Yay, Summer!! Here's the link: ru-vid.comFObHdg_7p8o?si=ERjyADMoStV141wh
Welllll, I just finished a pair of socks……and they don’t fit. What the heck! Then I realized I didn’t use my regular yarn and needles. I am gifting them and casting on again😂😂😂
I’m still waiting too. I was so excited before the release and for the first week after. Did the publisher just not release how many of us are out here?
As a designer I think you should do what others do. Instead of picking up yarns starting the sock try getting some colored crayons or pencils and place colors together with a hand drawn sock on paper. Yes, that sock it rather wrong in color choices.😢
