Design Plans for the Best PVC Pipe Bike Trailer! - E-bike Build # 5

This trailer design is remarkably strong. I came up with it as a way to haul 4 golf cart batteries to power my e-bike. Because of the pandemic my business is dead and I am using the location to host a volunteer community food pantry.
With the financial collapse on our island I have had to park my cars and rely on my e-bike as my primary transport. It is nearly impossible to get lithium batteries here so I had to use 4 golf cart batteries to make a 48V battery. This is where the bike cart comes in. Our climate is hard on things like this so I did not want to use metal to build it. It is all PVC pipe with the exception of the two recycled kids bike wheels.
I have been using it as my daily driver to carry between 250-300 lbs of cargo around town every day. No metal to rust or wood to rot. No expensive and complicated connecting hardware that can break or go missing, the seat post connecter is simple and works great! Super simple yet functional design.

I am so happy I found this build. I'm a DIY retired guy that lives on the big island. I know all about the harsh environment and how PVC is a wonderful thing. I also have a couple electric bikes and I been wanting to build a trailer. Also when I go to the mainland and do some rails to trails I can build one of these while I'm over there. Lucky we live Hawaii except for getting lithium batteries shipped among other things. But Amazon is a godsent here in the islands.

To make the whole thing stronger, I would double pipe it, where you put a smaller pipe inside of a larger pipe. Then for extra security and peace of mind, i would suggest bending over a piece of metal where you flattened the pcv pipes to put the wheels on so that the weight is supported by metal fittings instead of bearing down on the pvc itself, that way you should theoretically never have to worry about the pipes breaking at the wheel connection like what happened with your first build.
@DIYKauai
@DIYKauai 3 месяца назад
Several people have made that comment and it misses the point of this build. What you are suggesting is to build an internal frame of metal to transfer the load too. In the tropics, metal and wood are points of rapid failure. When I upgraded this design to 2" schedule 40 PVC and then fiberglass reinforced the main stress points it works fantastically and can regularly transport over 100 lbs. I even carried a 200 lb. person up a hill with it. The trailer has been used daily by homeless people for several years now without failing.

I like this idea and a good source of lithium batteries is wish shopping made easy ( fun ). I am an avid outdoors man and use a bike a lot to get to places to hunt and if made longer it would be just about perfect and very lite weight which I need to haul equipment and after game out ( deer and or small game ). I have an idea to reinforce the place where the wheels go by heating the pvc at that one point on each side.befor you glue all the parts together and while the pipe is still hot insert the next size down of pic into it and let cool and you can still reheat and flatten for the area for the wheels it will increase the strength to about 100lbs more also it will work great for a hybrid pedal assist bike ( gas& electric ) motors with a jack shaft for more speed from the gas engine.

One thing for the preperation of the pipe. Is to champfer the outside of the pipe. What this does, it helps to keep from pushing the glue down the outside of pipe. There is a tool for this or just take razor knife and bevel the outer edge of the pipe. Hold the pipe in one hand and rotate it against the blade at a 45 degree angle. Also when glueing the pipe and fitting, rotate when bringing them together. Start the process 90 degrees out. When doing multiple tees, I've found it to be easier to use the face of the tee on the table for checking square. Hope this may help. Nice build

Your trailer is cool. Looking at your diagram of PVC pipe lengths and it occurs to me that the lengths are plenty short enough to double schedule 40 pipe like 1/2 inch and 3/4 by heating the 3/4 with a heat gun and inserting the 1/2 inside to give enough strength without having to work with massive large diameter pipe. Also, don't paint it black. It absorbs more heat and weakens the structural integrity. Splitting PVC is the result of overheating. I'd suggest compressing the axel arm sections prior to assembly and paint. Additionally, I wouldn't compress them all the way flat.
@funnylooknkoala9984

If you added a solid axel all the way threw the weight capacity would raise even further

Thanks for your video. Very inspiring. I love working with PVC. I need to build a trailer as well. Do you think it’s possible to build a recumbent trike or quad with PVC? Maybe use 80 grade instead of 40 grade? I only need to support a body weight of a small adult, so double the capacity for safety (350lb). Keep up the good work and any thought would be appreciated. 🙏
@DIYKauai
@DIYKauai Год назад
I totally think so and have some thoughts to build a 3 wheeler similar to the ELF bike. Schedule 40 is quite strong and you can fiberglass reinforce any areas that would be subject to extra stress.
@PaulSmith-fb7yc
@PaulSmith-fb7yc 3 года назад
Hi, great video, do you have any ideas on how to reinforce the tube where it joins to the axle, maybe gluing another layer of pvc on top?
@DIYKauai
@DIYKauai 3 года назад
No need... I put big washers on to distribute the load a little and of course upgraded to the 2" PVC. The first one cracked because I overloaded it with almost 500 lbs of stuff... most bike trailers only support about 100 lbs. The whole point of the prototype was to push it until it broke so I know where the breaking point is. This one can carry plenty of weight reliably for a long time. It is my daily driver and I regularly carry about 100 lbs with no problems. Just did a 16 mile trip over bumpy roads with 150 lbs of stuff including construction materials and it was all good!
@rdkuless
@rdkuless 3 года назад
You could also make a Solar charger for your ebike.. The trailer will need a GVB-8 Boost Charge MPPT 48v controller. Then a 100w solar panel.. Look at the SunTrip race on youtube for ideas.. You won't need to haul those heavy SLA batteries.
@DIYKauai
@DIYKauai 3 года назад

Ive revisited this build multiple times. I love the design and ingenuity. I have not built this because I am really wanting a single wheel design for single track riding on/off road. I wonder if you have given thought to doing a pvc build in a single track configuration like the Burley Coho XC?
@DIYKauai
@DIYKauai 2 года назад
Just use the same build techniques for a 1 wheeler. Mimic the layouts of some of the commercial models but just make it from PVC. If you screw the PVC together then you can re-use it.
@bombdiggitydave3881

@@DIYKauai Thanks for the response and insight. That is my intention. To use your PVC concept but, hybrid the design for a solo wheeled cargo bike trailer. Your ideas have inspired me for sure. I had hoped you might give some detailed insight from your perspective if you have ever even given it any thought as to narrowing your design to a single wheel trailer? I wonder if putting a hub motor into a single wheeled PVC frame, how to beef it up so it would not easily tear out of the flattened pvc axle design. Maybe gusset, plates of aluminum and some type of torque arms one one or either side? Anyway, I do appreciate you trailblazing the PVC concept and proving its longevity.
@clinttaynan6444
@clinttaynan6444 2 года назад
I wonder what will be the effect if your pipe will be coated with a resin to make it more sturdy. shredded plastic can also be added and inserted inside the pipe so you can use smaller size pipes to match the size. Also, since you manage to flatten the pipe, do you think it will be more structurally sound if its gets flatten close to the coupling area. It would be interesting to see more of your innovations.

Aloha Will. There are 4 other videos in this build series. In this one I rebuilt the trailer so I reused the connecting arm from the last build. For electrical I wired 4 12V batteries in series to get a 48V battery. I charge it to full which is about 52V and then discharge it down to about 40V... this has pretty much killed the battery, reducing my distance by over half in a few weeks. Lead acid car batteries are the worst for an e-bike. For electrical I use the XT90S quick connectors because I have to plug/unplug every day. From the batteries I have run wire through the connecting arm of the trailer to just under the seatpost of the bike. This is where it connects to the motor controller. I have an XT90S by the motor controller, and another one next to the batteries. This allows me to disconnect the bikes or the batteries easily. I am so done with lead acid... looking forward to getting a lithium battery. It is hard to get them shipped to Kauai.

Some things that were not mentioned in this video were; In order to get this to work you must have passed through charging he didn't mention that, camera a lot of bikes and scooters and other electrical vehicles sometimes don't have this feature and therefore you cannot use an external battery to connect them. Now. Now if I'm wrong this is why he should mention in his videos Oh why and how you connect the external battery battery and what is its capabilities and how much further further can you go. I will watch his other videos I already subscribed to find out if he mentioned these other attributes in his older or newer videos, the trailer was very easy and very good And I hope this comment doesn't make him upset but yes there are room for improvements like using Composite materials to make it stronger, Keep in mind this idea if you're in a hot air balloon you're dangling from materials real, no use poor man's fiberglass techniques techniques to wrap your PVC pipes at the weak points, The glue would be up to you I've used super glue all the way from from gorilla glue But taking these materials and rapping them tigit's rapidly around and glooming them greatly strengthens strengthens the trailer and trailer and still keep its light weight capabilities, For those who don't understand this is carbon fibing techniques Or fiberglassing just Or fiberglassing If you want to stretch the imagination it is basically just Laminating a material that has strength to it these are called composite materials when you do such a technique it works and I think you'll be able to carry a 1000 pounds if he uses this with some steel bracket This is Lloyd Stovall from media library who has been doing these techniques for years, We have a flying car that uses these or this technique And we have ideas to improve the batteries up-and-coming soon Thanks everybody for reading this by now
