This was such a fun video! Loved the try on part, it gives me an idea of what to look for when I go out shopping. The second plaid blazer was so good on you! Coach isn’t as popular in the U.S as it may be elsewhere, vintage coach may be more preferable. Dooney and Bourke is a great brand. Definitely do more videos like this! 💚
Yes, part 2 please. Love the 2 bags. The Marc Jacobs 😍 I really loved that cape from the first thrift store, but you probably wouldn't get a lot of wear out of it if you already wasn't sure if you wanted it.
I love that you took us thrifting with you! Also very happy about your purse score! I would have taken the colorful hoodie, the second blazer you showed us, the coach purse and especially the suede leather wool lined coat. I would love to see more of this thrifting from you. Maybe you can show us the difference in the stores from your area and the U.S..
If you are still in LA, you might want to check out the sample sales downtown on the last Friday of the month, tomorrow, at the California Mart at the NW corner of 9th & Los Angeles Street
@@Thestyleinsider. meter parking on the streets. Also there are lots that u can pay 20 dollars and park there in the lots. They are all over Dtla. That's how I park when I go down there.
Good for you, Lee...thanks for the change in scenery...nice thrifting with you. Reminds me...I am cognizant of the reality that you have to be safe and protect your privacy but ...I would love to see more of New Zealand, through your "eyes", please and thanks 😊.
Had fun watching the thrifting experience. Brings to mind that this would be fun to do on vacation around the world! The cape was great. Sweatshirt was great. I would have bought the Ralph Lauren puffer vest and sewed on a patch over the slash. Part two would be welcome.
Great video, Leoni. Redondo Beach is nice, but you might try some areas like Hollywood, Fairfax area, Venice Beach and Melrose. LA is so spread out, but these areas are a bit funky and there are a lot of fun places to thrift shop.
@@Thestyleinsider. Probably both! My daughter and her son, whose has his own street wear designs on Instagram, recently went to the area of Melrose and parts of Hollywood to thrift, but I remember shopping there in the 80's and 90's. So fun!
As a not yet minimalist Leonie, I was listening attentively to your comments and why you were deciding against buying something even if it did look ok. Amazed you came out of it with two items (plus tee) but items you will be thrilled to wear. I guess that’s the essence of it isn’t it? Not to be drowning in stuff but to have a select few hi-wear quality pieces
Yes I do try and be selective and ask myself whether I’d buy it if it was full price 😬 Knowing I can only carry so much home with me made it easier too to be honest 👍🏼
💟 Actually I know exactly what you were thinking about that patterned cropped sweatshirt. Because it had a drastic cropped design, I probably would not tend to grab it so I understand why you left it there! The handbags are adorable. I truly admire your restraint in not picking up everything you liked. Enjoyed going thrifting with you & look forward to watching more in 2023.....Thank you & Have a Very Happy & Healthy New Year!!! 💟💜💟
I recommend the smaller thrift stores in the San Fernando Valley. Burbank and Reseda still have stores that were there in the 70's. You will find more unusual items there. Ventura Blvd and Hollywood also have great stuff. Love thrifting with you!
How wonderful..congratulations for driving on the other side!! Thrifting!!! I host the monthly THRIFTED LOOK FOR LESS CHALLENGE...a small group of lovely ladies all over the world. If you are ever interested and would like to make a visit...we would love to have you stop by!!!❤🧡💛
Fun to watch. Recently I decided that I can buy almost everything (clothing) thrifted. There's a lot about it that works for me at this stage of my life.
That was neat. I’ve never been to LA a and I live in the US. But it’s the opposite coast from me. You found some great buys. I have some Dooney & Bourke bags myself. They aren’t thrifted. But they have lasted me many years. I’m carrying one of them right now. You did good driving. I can’t imagine doing that. I’ve only been were they drive on the right.
Oh my gosh soo jealous of American people!! Awesome job driving on the other side of the road! When my husband and I are on vacation in a right side driving country ( we drive right side) I am shouting all day from the passenger seat: LEFT LEFT LEFT !!!! 😂😂 but it works!
I commend you for such thrifting restraint! I have a hard time being discerning because things are cheap and I may be hooked on the thrill of the thrift. Please take us along whenever you thrift, you're an inspiration in deliberation.
It took me waaay too long and cost me waaay too much money to get to the point where if I have to talk myself into getting a piece of clothing, it's an instant no. I guess being fat and having to compete with others for such a limited selection made me think I had to buy things that even remotely fit my body. Saying no to anything less than perfect these days is a cinch. So, never second guess what you left behind. And good for you picking up vintage Dooney and Bourke. They're too underrated in my opinion, but the quality is spot on. Finding the ones with leather and suede lining are so luxurious. Always enjoy your perspective and hope you enjoy your U.S. visit. Hope we're hospitable and kind. 😘
Yes the Dooney quality is lovely and I was surprised I'd not heard of the brand before. And yes there's never any point in buying something if you're even a little undecided - I've also learnt that lesson the hard way! Arrgghhhh!
I wish we could have thrifted together while you were here!! Love this!! Next time you are in Cali let me know.. I will take you to all my fav spots in Orange County!
Wow, you were here!! so Cool.for shopping at our thrift stores. I will shop with new eyes now. (I thought the cape looked good on you). Sherman Tee shirt with the logo I loved. I liked all your reasoning on your decisions. Yes, the H&M colorful hoodie was too cropped, but cute. I hope you went back to NZ with some items you loved and for your sons also! (Good choices on the purses). Happy New Year by the way.
OMG! Hope you enjoyed your time here in my hood! The thrift shopping in the South Bay is actually really good. There’s so many other consignment places here. I actually donate many times during the year to the exact Good Will and Salvation Army you went to in this video!
Omg. I loved the video. I'm heading to California the second week of January. It will be my first and maybe only time there..lol A dream come true. Please do a part 2. I need any recommendations for nice thrift stores.. open to suggestions. Thank you
I love this . Well done firstly on driving on the other side. Love the items you found . I get caught up on labels . It looked a great shop with everything in.
Lots of rain coming in the next few days. Be careful driving! It’s not your driving you have to watch, but other peoples. I’m a Kiwi and have lived in the greater LA region for close to 20 years, and people here forget how to drive in the rain. They have no idea. It’s almost amusing watching them. Hope you have a fantastic time while you’re here! If you feel like venturing further south, the Outlets at Orange can be pretty good.
Ahh thanks for the great advice - I think I will stay off the roads in the rain. Did it take you a while to feel comfortable driving here? I feel like I’m learning to drive all over again 🤦🏻♀️😂
@@Thestyleinsider. It took me a few weeks to get used to it, so kudos to you for driving straight away! The only time I ever have to really watch myself is the first few days in the States or NZ right after a flight. Then I make note of what side of the car I'm in, and it's easier to keep everything sorted. Also, just for laughs, watch the morning news when it rains here. So funny!
Wow! Love the Marc Jacobs purse...what a terrific find! So glad that you left that cropped hoodie behind...it's for a twelve year old! I've gotten into vintage shopping recently and found a Burberry top in perfect condition for CAD $175!
You found some very nice pieces. My favorite was the H&M multicolor sweater, bright orange puffer, and Brown Vintage Coach bag. I can't believe you didn't get that cropped sweater. It was sooo cute and could even be worn with a shirt like you had on. Thanks for sharing all the great finds. We enjoy them all, purchased or not!!!
Another spot for super items in LA is the Goodwill in Beverly Hills and also Council Thrift. There’s also ‘Out of the Closet’. The principle is that the best finds will come from the high end neighborhoods. So head up to West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica etc. …think Manalo Blahniks for $25 or Prada for similar. My awesome vintage cherry red Chanel swing coat was 15. Those prices were from 15 to 20 years ago…but there are still awesome finds to be had in LA. Congrats on your finds😻
Welcome to CA. Those are a few of my favorite places to thrift. Had you gone down another few blocks, you would have run into another Goodwill. That area (South Bay) is heavily saturated with thrift stores.
Welcome to our country, I loved the video. Great finds, I live in Alabama the Deep South known for our southern hospitality! Hope you enjoy your stay here and find more great bargains while you are here. 🇺🇸🤩💛
Great video Leonie!! Loved it and I love your brutal cull, makes it very helpful for me when I'm thrifting. I was just in New York and visited a Goodwill store and walked away with a very unique frock coat and a tweed semi cropped Calvin Klein jacket as I don't have anything of the sort.
Wow your thrift finds sound amazing! And yes I did a brutal cull - probs because I have to fit everything in my suitcase and take it home. It may have been different otherwise LOL x
Welcome to the US! I think your decisions were right on. The best piece in Salvation Army was that light grey plaid blazer, but you were right that it's similar to others you own. (I wish you'd shown the try on of the suede jacket with the elastic waist - I would've tried that on myself!). Too bad about the orange puffer in Goodwill not fitting. Had it fit, that would've been perfect for you! Congrats on the purses!
Oh gosh did I not show that in the end? I must have accidentally deleted that when I was cutting the video down sorry. I actually liked it on but the shoulder pads were a little too much for me x
LA is a garment industry city. Do you know there are specialty thrift sales from the Hollywood studios? There are higher end thrift stores too like NCJW and some that support various causes. Rose Bowl flea market is very popular. It could take your entire vacation going through all of these spots. The LA Times even had an article picking out favorites.
Few days ago I thrifted a rich bright red Eloquii cape, and left a bunch of plaid trousers on the rack. IMHO: If you happen to wear a cape, let it stand out. That cape was a bit too classy...
Hi I'm new to your channel I really enjoyed, but I couldn't believe that you hadn't heard of Dooney & Bourke before it's always been a high end designer brand in in the states
Thank you and yes I'm surprised I'd never heard of it but I haven't been to the States for about 10 years so maybe that's why???!!!! Not sure but I've been on their website and love their bags xx
Personally I feel overall you made two great decisions as to the purses whereas I thought the plaid lighter weight man's blazer worked for you but definitely felt the cape was suited to someone who had a larger body frame than yourself. For myself; I occasionally shop at 2nd hand stores as live in an area that has several which also has a large Italian community and have scored some reasonably priced lovely leather handbags and pure silk scarves, whereas otherwise here in Canada you pay 'an arm and leg for'.
Never second guess your choices. I used to buy lots of things when I thrifted and many of them only got worn once or twice or never and then ended up being redonated. I am now really picky. I don't pay much attention to labels but look at fit, color and how it fits my lifestyle. I have thrifted things that I have had for years and love to wear. One tip when you are thrifting is if you find an item that does not go with what you are wearing, find some things to style with it and try them on together. You don't need to buy the outfit but rather just get an idea of how to style the item.
I need to thrift with you .. I sew and can make and repair anything!! and that orange puffer .. so simple to add a side panel in a fun color or print!! I can invisible mend that Ralph too...( you can make anything look good girl! wow) I would have been buying all the things u left behind haaa...... prob not that cropped sweat shirt.. looked sort of for a preteen
Thank you for taking us thrifting with you! Awesome purchases! I did like the cape. Thought it was a good color and it looked great on you. Yes, you should make a part two!
Any time you thrift and/or travel, I want to see as much of it as possible. Opinion: the soft grey menswear plaid blazer was very nice, you could wear that cute colorful cropped hoodie if you could find a way to get over your discomfort, the suede/wool jacket was something I wouldn't have passed up bc I live in Texas where it can be summer in the morning & winter in the evening (so a close - fitting beautiful coat would be perfect for my environment). BUT...these are my opinions only. The person spending the money & packing the suitcase is the one whose opinion counts. And I think you know the purchases you did make were the right ones. You scored big time, and you'll be happy to get those items back home & brag about thrifting them on your travels.
I was SO close to grabbing that beautiful coat but it was a tad too tight under the arms and would have taken up my entire suitcase sadly. But it was a real beauty indeed 🙏🏼
Welcome to L.A.! I love these thrifting videos because it helps me know where to go to find the good stuff! Thank you for sharing! Loved that Dooney and Burke bag! Great find!
@@Thestyleinsider. Wow, really?! That's the one place I would have expected to have great finds! I'm sure you'll find some other great thrift stores. There are some consignment shops along Ventura Blvd in Studio City/Sherman Oaks. Buffalo Exchange, Wasteland and Crossroads are decent and not far from each other. I think Melrose has quite a bit of vintage shops but they might be on the pricey side.
Are you still here??? st. vincent de paul thrift in Los Angeles P.S. some of the items you put back at the Goodwill looked so good on you! You should have definitely gone back for them😉
Hubby and I went thrifting/secondhand shopping in LA too and found plenty of items. There are so many different brands and to check if it’s vintage check where it’s made. My favorite thrifted/secondhand find is a Mackintosh rain coat retailed over $1K purchased for $12.99 at Salvation Army along with a Marni dress that’s also retailed for over $1k for $7.99, first time finding Farm Rio at Goodwill so that was nice, Hubby’s Scotch and Soda jacket at a secondhand store for $50 which is also a steal, a vintage fur stole for $25 , Velvet shirts and a brand new quilted maxi coat from Athleta.
Liked you video and especially the “try on” bits, good solution with the leggings. You need to be more specific about where you are…I.e. West Hollywood, or Marina del Rey, etc. Los Angeles is just w-a-a-y too big to just say “LA” when you mention locations, there are 88 cities and 10 million people here!
The 100% wool lined suede jacket would have definitely come home with me!! If I needed an oversized look... Maybe top off with an oversized gilet... But, nope it wouldn't have been necessary for me to style the heck out of that piece! Oh Well 🙁
Fun video! I have a literal fleet of Dooney & Bourke bags. All from the 90s and early 2000s. My mom worked at a D&B back in the day. When she passed in July, I adopted hers and when I carry them, I pretend she's there with me.
Back in 1990, I shopped at Goodwill in Redondo Beach. I would always find new with tags items!! There was also a store called Second Chance that would carry a lot of consignment pieces from Palos Verdes ladies. Great prices.
